Most fossil evidence on-land is Early Pleistocene in age, and occurs in peninsular Italy, Sicily and on some Greek islands, whilst submerged situations are by large late Pleistocene. According to circumstances, the mode of preservation of fossil cold-water coral varies sensibly (from loose corals to micritic limestones) what affects the level of confidence of the paleoecological reconstruction. All known situations point about a bathyal setting for such cold-water coral hosting deposits in the Mediterranean basin, but under many respects the geological record of cold-water coral paleoenvironments is yet largely underworked. Research developments are discussed, with special emphasis on the widespread submarine occurrences which prevail over the on-land cold-water coral legacy.

Parsons; Ricardo Silva Jacinto; Ronan Apprioual;Turbidity currents transport globally significant volumes of sediment and organic carbon into the deep-sea and pose a hazard to critical infrastructure. Despite advances in technology, their powerful nature often damages expensive instruments placed in their path. These challenges mean that turbidity currents have only been measured in a few locations worldwide, in relatively shallow water depths (,,2 km). Here, we share lessons from recent field deployments about how to design the platforms on which instruments are deployed. First, we show how monitoring platforms have been affected by turbidity currents including instability, displacement, tumbling and damage. Second, we relate these issues to specifics of the platform design, such as exposure of large surface area instruments within a flow and inadequate anchoring or seafloor support. Third, we provide recommended modifications to improve design by simplifying mooring configurations, minimizing surface area and enhancing seafloor stability. Finally, we highlight novel multi-point moorings that avoid interaction between the instruments and the flow, and flow-resilient seafloor platforms with innovative engineering design features, such as feet and ballast that can be ejected. Our experience will provide guidance for future deployments, so that more detailed insights can be provided into turbidity current behaviour, in a wider range of settings.

Its continental shelf areas, steep bottom relief, and waters up to 500-900 m deep offer suitable habitat to neritic and pelagic species. We used photographic capture-recapture, distribution modelling, and direct observations to investigate the abundance, status, habitat preferences, movements, and group size of four odontocete species regularly observed in the Gulf, based on five years (2011-2015) of survey effort from small boats. Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) are more abundant (1324 individuals, 95%CI 1158-1515) than was determined from previous estimates. Striped dolphins appear to be confined to the Gulf, where they favour deep and oligotrophic waters, and were encountered in single-species and mixed-species groups. Shortbeaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) (22 individuals, 95%CI 16-31), individuals with intermediate pigmentation (possibly striped/common dolphin hybrids) (55, 95%CI 36-83), and a single Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) were only encountered in mixedspecies groups with striped dolphins. Short-beaked common dolphins constitute a discrete conservation unit (subpopulation), and based on the current estimate, would qualify as Critically Endangered according to International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) (39 animals, 95%CI 33-47) occur in single-species groups; they prefer continental shelf waters and areas near fish farms in the northern sector, and several animals appear to move into and out of the Gulf. Additionally, we contribute records of marine fauna and an assessment of the fishing fleet operating in the Gulf. Our study shows that the importance of this vulnerable marine environment has been underestimated, and management action must be taken to mitigate human impact and ensure long-term protection.

A “transparent and accessible ocean” is one of the key objectives of the Ocean Decade 2021–30. In this context, marine infrastructures become significant components of a global knowledge environment, enabling environmental assessment and providing the necessary data for scientifically valid actions to protect and restore ocean health, to use marine resources in a sustainable way. The data is collected, analyzed, organized, and used by people and their good use/reuse can be obtained with social practices, technological and physical agreements aimed at facilitating collaborative knowledge, decision-making, inference. The vision is a digital ocean data ecosystem made up of multiple, interoperable, and scalable components. The huge amount of data and the resulting products can drive the development of new knowledge as well as new applications and services. Predictive capabilities that derive from the digital ecosystem enable the implementation of services for real-time decision-making, multihazard warning systems, and advance marine space planning. The chapter develops following the progressive complexity and information content of products deriving from oceanic data: data cycle and data collections, data products, oceanic reanalysis. The chapter discusses the new challenges of data products and the complexity of deriving them.

For many years, a notable increase has been observed in the number of cases of severe intoxication, through the consumption of contaminated seafood and through external exposure. While dinoflagellates and diatoms are considered the main source of marine biotoxins, there is also growing evidence that certain groups of marine cyanobacteria are likely to produce various toxins with potential harmful effects on humans, especially in cases of massive proliferation. Some of the recent findings that support this hypothesis are summarized in this chapter.

The technique is increasingly popular for analysis of cultured cells but is not widely applied to intact organisms. Here, we describe a method for labeling and detection of single mRNA molecules in whole embryos of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. This method permits measurements of gene expression in absolute units, enabling new studies of transcriptional mechanisms underlying precision and reproducibility in cell specification.

F.;International audience; On the central Nile deep-sea fan, stratified sediments overlying mass-transport deposits (MTDs) are deformed into slope-parallel seabed undulations associated with fluid seepage. The western part of this system, in water depths of 1,950-2,250 m, is examined using multi-frequency data from hull-mounted and deep-towed swath/profiling systems. Sub-bottom profiles show sub-vertical fluid pipes that terminate both at and below seabed, and gas signatures along fault planes bounding the undulations. Fluid seepage is recorded by high- to intermediate-backscatter patches (HBPs, IBPs) that differ in appearance on multibeam imagery (30 kHz, ≤3 m penetration) and sidescan swaths (170/190 kHz, <0.1 m penetration). Comparison of the two suggests a distinction of (a) buried carbonates (0.1-3 m), (b) broad near-seabed (<0.1 m) carbonate pavements elongate along the undulations, (c) sub-circular areas of seabed seepage up to 300 m across. Four of the latter have narrower gas flares at their edges rising 400-800 m above seabed. These results are consistent with an evolving system of narrow fluid conduits that support the growth and burial of carbonate pavements, shifting over millennial timescales along linear zones parallel to fault planes rooted in MTDs. Sediment deformation above MTDs is inferred to provide pathways for fluid escape, but migration of gas-rich fluids from depth is likely to have facilitated slope destabilisation

Such information is stored as geochemical signals, such as changes in trace elements concentration (B/Ca, Li/Mg, P/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, U/Ca) or stable and radiogenic isotopes composition (δ11B, δ13C, δ18O, 14C, eNd), that are usually converted into environmental parameters using empirical calibration equations. The aragonite skeleton of cold-water corals is sufficiently uranium-rich to be suitable for U-series dating, providing precise and accurate ages for the last 600–700 kyrs. This opens the possibility to obtain reconstructions of key oceanographic parameters for the intermediate and deep water masses at sub-decadal scale resolution for climatically-relevant time windows in the past. However, part of the geochemical signal incorporated into the coral skeleton is modulated by the physiology of the coral, which complicates the interpretation of the geochemical proxies. This “vital effect” needs to be taken into account and corrected for to obtain reliable reconstructions of past changes in seawater temperature, pH and nutrient content. On the other hand, these biologically-induced geochemical signals can be used to investigate the processes controlling coral biomineralisation and better understand the resilience of cold-water corals to environmental and climate changes.

As a consequence, the unregulated use of dye chemicals from the family of the triphenylmethane dyes, malachite green (MG), a common commercial and inexpensive fabric dye, has developed and been used as a therapeutic multi-usage drug to globally reduce parasitic, microbial, and fungal diseases found in fish and seafood farming. There have been trade issues associated with certain dye compounds used as veterinary medicines, particularly with MG and its chemically related congeners in aquaculture. This chapter reviews these pharmacologically active dyes from their chemistry and toxicological concerns to their regulatory monitoring in aquaculture products due to their undesirable presence in aquaculture-sourced foods. Analytical methods to determine the presence of illegal pharmacological dyes in edible seafood products must meet a number of requirements for regulatory food control.

Most fossil evidence on-land is Early Pleistocene in age, and occurs in peninsular Italy, Sicily and on some Greek islands, whilst submerged situations are by large late Pleistocene. According to circumstances, the mode of preservation of fossil cold-water coral varies sensibly (from loose corals to micritic limestones) what affects the level of confidence of the paleoecological reconstruction. All known situations point about a bathyal setting for such cold-water coral hosting deposits in the Mediterranean basin, but under many respects the geological record of cold-water coral paleoenvironments is yet largely underworked. Research developments are discussed, with special emphasis on the widespread submarine occurrences which prevail over the on-land cold-water coral legacy.

Parsons; Ricardo Silva Jacinto; Ronan Apprioual;Turbidity currents transport globally significant volumes of sediment and organic carbon into the deep-sea and pose a hazard to critical infrastructure. Despite advances in technology, their powerful nature often damages expensive instruments placed in their path. These challenges mean that turbidity currents have only been measured in a few locations worldwide, in relatively shallow water depths (,,2 km). Here, we share lessons from recent field deployments about how to design the platforms on which instruments are deployed. First, we show how monitoring platforms have been affected by turbidity currents including instability, displacement, tumbling and damage. Second, we relate these issues to specifics of the platform design, such as exposure of large surface area instruments within a flow and inadequate anchoring or seafloor support. Third, we provide recommended modifications to improve design by simplifying mooring configurations, minimizing surface area and enhancing seafloor stability. Finally, we highlight novel multi-point moorings that avoid interaction between the instruments and the flow, and flow-resilient seafloor platforms with innovative engineering design features, such as feet and ballast that can be ejected. Our experience will provide guidance for future deployments, so that more detailed insights can be provided into turbidity current behaviour, in a wider range of settings.

Its continental shelf areas, steep bottom relief, and waters up to 500-900 m deep offer suitable habitat to neritic and pelagic species. We used photographic capture-recapture, distribution modelling, and direct observations to investigate the abundance, status, habitat preferences, movements, and group size of four odontocete species regularly observed in the Gulf, based on five years (2011-2015) of survey effort from small boats. Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) are more abundant (1324 individuals, 95%CI 1158-1515) than was determined from previous estimates. Striped dolphins appear to be confined to the Gulf, where they favour deep and oligotrophic waters, and were encountered in single-species and mixed-species groups. Shortbeaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) (22 individuals, 95%CI 16-31), individuals with intermediate pigmentation (possibly striped/common dolphin hybrids) (55, 95%CI 36-83), and a single Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) were only encountered in mixedspecies groups with striped dolphins. Short-beaked common dolphins constitute a discrete conservation unit (subpopulation), and based on the current estimate, would qualify as Critically Endangered according to International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) (39 animals, 95%CI 33-47) occur in single-species groups; they prefer continental shelf waters and areas near fish farms in the northern sector, and several animals appear to move into and out of the Gulf. Additionally, we contribute records of marine fauna and an assessment of the fishing fleet operating in the Gulf. Our study shows that the importance of this vulnerable marine environment has been underestimated, and management action must be taken to mitigate human impact and ensure long-term protection.

A “transparent and accessible ocean” is one of the key objectives of the Ocean Decade 2021–30. In this context, marine infrastructures become significant components of a global knowledge environment, enabling environmental assessment and providing the necessary data for scientifically valid actions to protect and restore ocean health, to use marine resources in a sustainable way. The data is collected, analyzed, organized, and used by people and their good use/reuse can be obtained with social practices, technological and physical agreements aimed at facilitating collaborative knowledge, decision-making, inference. The vision is a digital ocean data ecosystem made up of multiple, interoperable, and scalable components. The huge amount of data and the resulting products can drive the development of new knowledge as well as new applications and services. Predictive capabilities that derive from the digital ecosystem enable the implementation of services for real-time decision-making, multihazard warning systems, and advance marine space planning. The chapter develops following the progressive complexity and information content of products deriving from oceanic data: data cycle and data collections, data products, oceanic reanalysis. The chapter discusses the new challenges of data products and the complexity of deriving them.

For many years, a notable increase has been observed in the number of cases of severe intoxication, through the consumption of contaminated seafood and through external exposure. While dinoflagellates and diatoms are considered the main source of marine biotoxins, there is also growing evidence that certain groups of marine cyanobacteria are likely to produce various toxins with potential harmful effects on humans, especially in cases of massive proliferation. Some of the recent findings that support this hypothesis are summarized in this chapter.

The technique is increasingly popular for analysis of cultured cells but is not widely applied to intact organisms. Here, we describe a method for labeling and detection of single mRNA molecules in whole embryos of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. This method permits measurements of gene expression in absolute units, enabling new studies of transcriptional mechanisms underlying precision and reproducibility in cell specification.

F.;International audience; On the central Nile deep-sea fan, stratified sediments overlying mass-transport deposits (MTDs) are deformed into slope-parallel seabed undulations associated with fluid seepage. The western part of this system, in water depths of 1,950-2,250 m, is examined using multi-frequency data from hull-mounted and deep-towed swath/profiling systems. Sub-bottom profiles show sub-vertical fluid pipes that terminate both at and below seabed, and gas signatures along fault planes bounding the undulations. Fluid seepage is recorded by high- to intermediate-backscatter patches (HBPs, IBPs) that differ in appearance on multibeam imagery (30 kHz, ≤3 m penetration) and sidescan swaths (170/190 kHz, <0.1 m penetration). Comparison of the two suggests a distinction of (a) buried carbonates (0.1-3 m), (b) broad near-seabed (<0.1 m) carbonate pavements elongate along the undulations, (c) sub-circular areas of seabed seepage up to 300 m across. Four of the latter have narrower gas flares at their edges rising 400-800 m above seabed. These results are consistent with an evolving system of narrow fluid conduits that support the growth and burial of carbonate pavements, shifting over millennial timescales along linear zones parallel to fault planes rooted in MTDs. Sediment deformation above MTDs is inferred to provide pathways for fluid escape, but migration of gas-rich fluids from depth is likely to have facilitated slope destabilisation

Such information is stored as geochemical signals, such as changes in trace elements concentration (B/Ca, Li/Mg, P/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, U/Ca) or stable and radiogenic isotopes composition (δ11B, δ13C, δ18O, 14C, eNd), that are usually converted into environmental parameters using empirical calibration equations. The aragonite skeleton of cold-water corals is sufficiently uranium-rich to be suitable for U-series dating, providing precise and accurate ages for the last 600–700 kyrs. This opens the possibility to obtain reconstructions of key oceanographic parameters for the intermediate and deep water masses at sub-decadal scale resolution for climatically-relevant time windows in the past. However, part of the geochemical signal incorporated into the coral skeleton is modulated by the physiology of the coral, which complicates the interpretation of the geochemical proxies. This “vital effect” needs to be taken into account and corrected for to obtain reliable reconstructions of past changes in seawater temperature, pH and nutrient content. On the other hand, these biologically-induced geochemical signals can be used to investigate the processes controlling coral biomineralisation and better understand the resilience of cold-water corals to environmental and climate changes.

As a consequence, the unregulated use of dye chemicals from the family of the triphenylmethane dyes, malachite green (MG), a common commercial and inexpensive fabric dye, has developed and been used as a therapeutic multi-usage drug to globally reduce parasitic, microbial, and fungal diseases found in fish and seafood farming. There have been trade issues associated with certain dye compounds used as veterinary medicines, particularly with MG and its chemically related congeners in aquaculture. This chapter reviews these pharmacologically active dyes from their chemistry and toxicological concerns to their regulatory monitoring in aquaculture products due to their undesirable presence in aquaculture-sourced foods. Analytical methods to determine the presence of illegal pharmacological dyes in edible seafood products must meet a number of requirements for regulatory food control.
