Lusi is a sediment-hosted hydrothermal system which has been erupting since 2006. It is fed by both mantellic and hydrothermal fluids, rising and mixing with the thermogenic gases and other fluids from shallower sedimentary formations. During a period of 24 months, we observe 156 micro-seismic earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging from ML0.5 to ML1.9, within our network. The events predominantly nucleate at depths of 8–13 km below the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex. Despite the geological evidence of active tectonic deformation and faulting observed at the surface, practically no seismicity is observed in the sedimentary basin hosting Lusi. Although we cannot entirely rule out artifacts due to an increased detection threshold in the sedimentary basin, the deficit in significant seismicity suggests aseismic deformation beneath Lusi due to the large amount of fluids that may lubricate the fault system. An analysis of focal mechanisms of nine selected events around the Arjuno-Welirang volcanic complex indicates predominantly strike-slip faulting activity in the region SW of Lusi. This type of activity is consistent with observable features such as fault escarpment, river deviation and railroad deformation; suggesting that the Watukosek fault system extends from the volcanic complex towards the NE of Java. Our results point out that the tectonic deformation of the region is characterized by a segmented fault system being part of a broader damage zone, rather than localized along a distinct fault plane. In this chapter, we summarize the sedimentary characteristics and the different (litho-)facies described over the past four decades, and how findings from individual case studies can be adapted as globally applicable sedimentological tools. A plethora of descriptive terms and partially conflicting definitions emerged in the ever-growing literature on VDA deposits (VDADs). These we summarize and make recommendations for future use. Different facies models that were developed at different volcanoes might point to unique emplacement conditions (e.g. dry versus wet; confined versus unconfined) and, if confirmed, the apparent ‘conflict' of terminology might help identify the paleo-settings of ancient VDAs. General observations of large unsaturated landslides of different origin show that preservation of source stratigraphy, (mega-)clasts, jigsaw-fractured clasts, and incorporation of runout path material are common features. Their unique composition, grain sizes, and abundance of matrix sets VDADs apart from deposits of large rockslides and debris flows. The latter can be associated with VDAs, and whether they formed syn- or post-VDAD emplacement is reflected in forensic evidence within the depositional sequences. Recent case studies illustrate the advances in analytical techniques and in understanding the processes of debris avalanche transport and deposition forty years after the eruption and lateral collapse of Mount St. Helens volcano.

This paper reviews the methodological and practical issues relevant to the ways in which natural scientists, historians and archaeologists may collaborate in the study of past climatic changes in the Mediterranean basin. We begin by discussing the methodologies of these three disciplines in the context of the consilience debate, that is, attempts to unify different research methodologies that address similar problems. We demonstrate that there are a number of similarities in the fundamental methodology between history, archaeology, and the natural sciences that deal with the past (“palaeoenvironmental sciences”), due to their common interest in studying societal and environmental phenomena that no longer exist. The three research traditions, for instance, employ specific narrative structures as a means of communicating research results. We thus present and compare the narratives characteristic of each discipline; in order to engage in fruitful interdisciplinary exchange, we must first understand how each deals with the societal impacts of climatic change. In the second part of the paper, we focus our discussion on the four major practical issues that hinder communication between the three disciplines. These include terminological misunderstandings, problems relevant to project design, divergences in publication cultures, and differing views on the impact of research. Among other recommendations, we suggest that scholars from the three disciplines should aim to create a joint publication culture, which should also appeal to a wider public, both inside and outside of academia. This paper emerged as a result of a workshop at Costa Navarino and the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO), Greece in April 2014, which addressed Mediterranean Holocene climate and human societies. The workshop was co-sponsored by IGBP/PAGES, NEO, the MISTRALS/PaleoMex program, the Labex OT-Med, the Bolin Centre for Climate Research at Stockholm University, and the Institute of Oceanography at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. The atoll-type Dalnegorsk limestone (Taukha Terrane, Russian Far East), deposited in the gigantic but poorly-documented Panthalassa Ocean, preserves a complete record of the diagenetic evolution of an Upper Triassic system, out of the Tethyan domain. To study the diagenesis of this carbonate system, we developed a novel analytical workflow, combining cathodoluminescence petrography with high-resolution analyses of environmental proxies in calcitic cements (δ18O, δ13C, REEY, trace and minor/major elements) and in situ U–Pb dating of calcite cements to precisely reconstruct the chronology of the diagenetic events. We combined these lines of evidence to establish a model of atoll evolution, from deposition to dismantling, based on 10 identified diagenetic episodes. The Dalnegorsk limestone records emergence at the Norian-Rhaetian transition, marked by meteoric and evaporitic cements, followed by dismantling of the atoll edges after drawning in the Early Jurassic. Neomorphism of calcitic shells occurred at the onset of calcitic sea conditions during the Toarcian-Bajocian. The limestone was thoroughly cemented during the Middle/Late Jurassic, and accreted within the Taukha Terrane during the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous. Accretion resulted in fracturing, brecciation, and recrystallisation of the Dalnegorsk limestone. This model is potentially applicable to any similar atoll system, irrespective of age. The evidence presented here extends our knowledge of Late Triassic environments in the Panthalassa Ocean, and more generally, our understandingg of mid-oceanic limestone formation and evolution.

Different facies models that were developed at different volcanoes might point to unique emplacement conditions (e.g. dry versus wet; confined versus unconfined) and, if confirmed, the apparent ‘conflict' of terminology might help identify the paleo-settings of ancient VDAs. General observations of large unsaturated landslides of different origin show that preservation of source stratigraphy, (mega-)clasts, jigsaw-fractured clasts, and incorporation of runout path material are common features. Their unique composition, grain sizes, and abundance of matrix sets VDADs apart from deposits of large rockslides and debris flows. The latter can be associated with VDAs, and whether they formed syn- or post-VDAD emplacement is reflected in forensic evidence within the depositional sequences. Recent case studies illustrate the advances in analytical techniques and in understanding the processes of debris avalanche transport and deposition forty years after the eruption and lateral collapse of Mount St. Helens volcano.

This paper reviews the methodological and practical issues relevant to the ways in which natural scientists, historians and archaeologists may collaborate in the study of past climatic changes in the Mediterranean basin. We begin by discussing the methodologies of these three disciplines in the context of the consilience debate, that is, attempts to unify different research methodologies that address similar problems. We demonstrate that there are a number of similarities in the fundamental methodology between history, archaeology, and the natural sciences that deal with the past (“palaeoenvironmental sciences”), due to their common interest in studying societal and environmental phenomena that no longer exist. The three research traditions, for instance, employ specific narrative structures as a means of communicating research results. We thus present and compare the narratives characteristic of each discipline; in order to engage in fruitful interdisciplinary exchange, we must first understand how each deals with the societal impacts of climatic change. In the second part of the paper, we focus our discussion on the four major practical issues that hinder communication between the three disciplines. These include terminological misunderstandings, problems relevant to project design, divergences in publication cultures, and differing views on the impact of research. Among other recommendations, we suggest that scholars from the three disciplines should aim to create a joint publication culture, which should also appeal to a wider public, both inside and outside of academia. This paper emerged as a result of a workshop at Costa Navarino and the Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO), Greece in April 2014, which addressed Mediterranean Holocene climate and human societies. The atoll-type Dalnegorsk limestone (Taukha Terrane, Russian Far East), deposited in the gigantic but poorly-documented Panthalassa Ocean, preserves a complete record of the diagenetic evolution of an Upper Triassic system, out of the Tethyan domain. To study the diagenesis of this carbonate system, we developed a novel analytical workflow, combining cathodoluminescence petrography with high-resolution analyses of environmental proxies in calcitic cements (δ18O, δ13C, REEY, trace and minor/major elements) and in situ U–Pb dating of calcite cements to precisely reconstruct the chronology of the diagenetic events. We combined these lines of evidence to establish a model of atoll evolution, from deposition to dismantling, based on 10 identified diagenetic episodes. The Dalnegorsk limestone records emergence at the Norian-Rhaetian transition, marked by meteoric and evaporitic cements, followed by dismantling of the atoll edges after drawning in the Early Jurassic. Neomorphism of calcitic shells occurred at the onset of calcitic sea conditions during the Toarcian-Bajocian. The limestone was thoroughly cemented during the Middle/Late Jurassic, and accreted within the Taukha Terrane during the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous. Accretion resulted in fracturing, brecciation, and recrystallisation of the Dalnegorsk limestone. This model is potentially applicable to any similar atoll system, irrespective of age. The evidence presented here extends our knowledge of Late Triassic environments in the Panthalassa Ocean, and more generally, our understandingg of mid-oceanic limestone formation and evolution.
