description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2020 FrancePublisher:Brill Authors: Wion, Anaïs;Wion, Anaïs;International audience; The medieval Ethiopian economy is another challenging subject to treat, for different reasons. Ethiopian economic history is not a new subject: Richard Pankhurst pioneered such work in the 1950s, with a focus on modern Ethiopia, and Donald Crummey did groundbreaking work, for the early modern period, in the 1980s and 1990s. But economic research specifically on the medieval period has developed very little. This chapter is therefore a first, albeit in what would seem to be a “traditional” field. Drawing methodologically and for relevant data on studies dealing with earlier and later periods, highlighting the economic aspects of scholarship on the medieval period, and mining primary sources where studies lack, it provides a synthetic picture of agriculture and animal husbandry as well as trade that encompasses, to the extent possible, Christian, Muslim, and local-religious societies in the variety of their ecological settings.

Indeed, the introduction of waste into manure heaps has resulted in the spreading of broken pottery across manured plots. The interpretation of off-site find scatters as remains of manuring is based both on ancient texts and archaeological evidence. The chronological and spatial analysis of these scatters allows us to estimate the stability and durability of agrarian occupation. Today, small GPS devices incorporated in low-cost smart phones enable us to map intra-plot densities for an estimate of the overall trend of occupation which does not necessarily discriminate between site and off-site, but is useful to discuss such a discrimination when necessary. However, a sound appreciation of buried structures and the impact of past human activities on the landscape can only be reached by a combination of different non-invasive methods. The REPERAGE project developed in the Garonne Valley near Toulouse (in southwestern France) aims at developing a global non-invasive archaeological strategy combining high resolution mapping of fieldwalking artefacts, low altitude aerial surveys using drones' on-board multispectral and Lidar sensors, and geophysical surveys (GPR, magnetometer). The objective is to obtain a high level of information about diachronic settlement systems and dynamics, and their relationships with the natural environment.

In the Sahel, maize has, till recently, been a supplementary crop (in particular for bridging the period from the end of the dry season till a new harvest) whereas it has become a staple in wet zones of Africa, such as the Gulf of Guinea. The adoption of this cereal among the Soninke (Senegal, Mauritania) is analysed in relation to agriculture, food and the culture. By broadening the scope to Senegambia during the 17th and 18th centuries, two possible diffusions (Portuguese and North African) of American maize can be imagined without eliminating the possibility of more than one introduction. Linguistic and historical data are presented along with the comments of agronomists and geneticists.

The neolithic levels of the rock-shelter "La Grande Rivoire" are composed of a multitude of sedimentary layers of very contrasting colours.Sedimentological analyses show that the fine fractions, mainly silty and rather strongly carbonated, have two main origins: on the one hand, an important accumulation of herbivores faeces due to the repeated penning of flocks (presence of calcite spheruliths, high concentrations of organic matter, high rate of phosphate), on the other hand, a large production of ashes from fire kindled directly on the dung or in nearby hearths. Animal bones of domestic species found in these dung levels show a large predominancy of goat/sheep over ox and pig. Archaeobotanical studies suggest a fodder/litter supply based on leafy and flowering tree branches. The protohistoric levels are different from the neolithic ones: ashy layers are missing whereas natural detritic components are better represented. Nevertheless, the analysis of thin sections from these levels shows the lasting presence of spheruliths and phytoliths. This indicates that stabling was during the Bronze and Iron Ages still practiced in the rock-shelter.

Burri and A. Durand on the way of life of current charcoal burners in Morocco, archaeometric analyses of samples from the floor of a hut in Naour were carried out in order to identify the presence of chemical concentrations. These analyses were performed in order to understand the chemical traces left by the various activities during the occupation of the hut and to provide data that could, in the future, serve as a framework for the interpretation of the archaeological record. The samples, taken from the floors in and around the hut, were analyzed by spot tests designed to identify the presence of phosphates, fats, and protein residues. Although it is not always possible to correlate certain concentrations with specific activities, in general, the analysis allowed for the traces of some domestic activities to be recognized, such as the preparation and consumption of food, both inside and outside the hut.

The digital transformation of research and its resources means that many of the artifacts, documents, materials, etc. that interest humanities research can now be combined in new and innovative ways. Due to the digital transformations, (big) data and information have become central to the study of culture and society. description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2020 FrancePublisher:Brill Authors: Wion, Anaïs;Wion, Anaïs;International audience; The medieval Ethiopian economy is another challenging subject to treat, for different reasons.
