A multiple-baseline design across individuals was employed. Participants spent 10 minutes, four or five times per week, practising an audio-tapedimagery program, which was consisted of 28 sessions. Measures of imagery vividness were obtained from the Vividness of Movement lmagery Questionnaire during the baseline and treatment phases. Results showed significant improvementsin vividness scores on both the external and internal imagery perspective scales, with increases in the range of 15.8 % to 32.3 % from the baseline to thetreatment phase. The findings are discussed with regard to individual cases and Lang's (1979) Bio-informational Theory.

But few studies have been concerned with the perception of tones in connection with L2 phonotactics, specifically for L1 speakers of tone languages. This study examines how L1 speakers of a tone language (Mandarin) perceive the clusters of an L2 language without tone (Russian). The issue that we address is how the perception of L2 phonotactics relates to the perception of tones. Some studies of loanwords showed that speakers of languages preferring simple CV syllable structure insert an illusory vowel as well as an illusory tone inside illegal consonant clusters [5], [6]. Our study investigates experimentally the interaction of phonotactic and prosodic adaptation for Mandarin L1. For this purpose we tested the perception of non-native clusters by monolingual Mandarin speakers. The experiment was conducted in Beijing, with 24 participants especially recruited from among monolingual speakers with minimal exposure to a foreign language. The stimuli were non-words produced by a Russian native speaker, containing CC sequences and controls (see table 1). The participants were asked to transcribe each stimulus they heard in Pinyin, including tones. Different types of transcription errors (e.g. epenthesis, metathesis) were observed and analyzed statistically. In this abstract I report only the general result, and I focus on the transcription of tones. The most frequent transcription included vowel epenthesis in the clusters. The illusory vowel is always perceived as short central [ɤ] (akta->akɤta), except after a labial (ipta->iputa). In the controls, the vowel /a/ between clusters is perceived as /a/ when it precedes a stressed syllable (katápa). When it follows a stressed syllable (ákata), it is perceived as central /ɤ/. This response reflects the fact that in Russian, an unstressed vowel preceding stress is less reduced than an unstressed vowel elsewhere in the word [3]. Thus, Mandarin listeners can still perceive a moderately reduced [a] in pre-tonic position, but report a fully reduced vowel in post-tonic position. Of the 24 participants, only 8 could transcribe tones. This is because Pinyin transcription, though commonly used, rarely includes tones. Moreover, the participants do not have more than high school education and do not write regularly. The results of the 8 speakers are summarized and discussed below. Word position and position with respect to stress. In the Russian stimuli, the stressed syllable is realized with an F0 peak. The listeners' responses thus correspond to the low F0 in the pre-stressed syllable, and to the falling F0 on the post-stressed syllable, respectively (fig. 1). Vowel quality. Overall, vowel quality, whether of illusory vowels or of real vowels, does not influence the perception of illusory tones (p>0.05). Consonant type. There is a significant difference of tone perception in relation to phonotactics in initial, pre-stressed clusters. Listeners reported high tone on the illusory vowel significantly more often in stop-stop (e.g., ktápa) than in stop-nasal clusters (p0.05), on a real vowel. In the clusters, where no vowel is actually produced, the audible F0 movement is very fast, rising toward the peak of the stressed vowel. The start of the F0 rise is influenced by the consonant type [4]: after a voiceless stop F0 rises in the following vowel, while after a sonorant stop F0 falls. In the controls (katápa), F0 starts low on the unstressed vowel, and rises into the following stressed syllable. The participants seem to respond to this systematic rise, rather than to the subtler effects of consonant-type.

Evolutionary details of this bio-event are missing due to the scarcity of well-preserved outcrops worldwide. The current study focuses on the calcareous nannofossil assemblage of the middle Norian to lower Rhaetian at Sommeraukogel and Steinbergkogel in the Northern Calcareous Alps (Austria). The sediments were deposited on a topographic high on a deeper shelf at a palaeolatitude around 20–30°N. The steps in the emergence of pelagic calcifiers are documented by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) study. The First Occurrence (FO) of coccolith, not identified at a species level, was recorded in the middle Norian (Alaunian 3). The oldest Crucirhabdus minutus and Archaeozygodiscus koessenensis were observed in the late Norian (Sevatian) and were followed by the FO of Crucirhabdus primulus in the early Rhaetian. These observations suggest a rather slow temporal evolution of the first coccolithophorids, with millions of years from the ancestor C. minutus to C. primulus, and in between the evolution of the new genus A. koessenensis. Diagenetic overprinting of the sedimentary succession has affected the preservation degree of the calcareous nannofossils but not the trend of their quantity in the studied samples, as proven by petrographic studies and trace element signatures of the calcareous sediments. This supports our quantitative estimates of the CaCO3 volume- and palaeo-fluxes due to the export productivity of the calcareous nannofossils, Prinsiosphaera triassica. Our results show the dominance and the increase in abundance of Prinsiosphaera triassica slightly above the Norian/Rhaetian boundary. However, calcareous nannofossils did not reach rock-forming abundances at this time and thus did not significantly influence the geochemical composition of the Western Tethys Ocean.

A key parameter which controls this interplay is the ratio of the particle gyroradius to the correlation length of the magnetic turbulence. For the vast majority of cosmic rays detected at the Earth, this parameter is small, and the particles are well confined by the Galactic magnetic field. But for cosmic rays more energetic than about 30 EeV, this parameter is large. These highest energy particles are not confined to the Milky Way and are presumed to be extragalactic in origin. Identifying their sources requires understanding how they are deflected by the intergalactic magnetic field, which appears to be weak, turbulent with an unknown correlation length, and possibly spatially intermittent. This is particularly relevant given the recent detection by the Pierre Auger Observatory of a significant dipole anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays of energy above 8 EeV. Here we report measurements of energetic-particle propagation through a random magnetic field in a laser-produced plasma. We characterize the diffusive transport of these particles and recover experimentally pitch-angle scattering measurements and extrapolate to find their mean free path and the associated diffusion coefficient, which show scaling-relations consistent with theoretical studies. This experiment validates these theoretical tools for analyzing the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays through the intergalactic medium.

A search for excited leptons $\rm e^*,~\mu^*, ~\tau^*$ and $\nu_{\rm e}^*$ in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s}$ = 161 GeV is performed using the $\rm 10.8 ~pb^{-1}$ of data collected by the L3 detector at LEP. No evidence has been found for their existence. From an analysis of the expected $\ell^*\ell^*$ pair production in the channels $\rm ee\gamma\gamma$, $\rm \mu\mu\gamma\gamma$, $\rm \tau\tau\gamma\gamma$, $\rm eeWW$, and $\rm \nu\nu\gamma\gamma$, the lower mass limits at 95\% C.L. are 79.7 GeV for $\rm e^{*}$, 79.9 GeV for $\mu^{*}$, 79.3 GeV for $\tau^{*}$ and 71.3 GeV for $\nu_{\rm e}^{*}$ assuming the same couplings as for standard leptons. From an analysis of the expected $\ell\ell^*$ single production in channels $\rm ee\gamma$, $\mu\mu\gamma$, $ \tau\tau\gamma$, $\rm \nu_{e}eW$ and $\nu\nu\gamma$, the upper limits on the couplings $\lambda/m_{\ell^*}$ up to $m_{\ell^{*}}$ = 161 GeV are determined.

and the Track-On HD Investigators; International audience; Background: The earliest white matter changes in Huntington’s disease are seen before disease onset in the premanifest stage around the striatum, within the corpus callosum, and in posterior white matter tracts. While experimental evidence suggests that these changes may be related to abnormal gene transcription, we lack an understanding of the biological processes driving this regional vulnerability. Methods: Here, we investigate the relationship between regional transcription in the healthy brain, using the Allen Institute for Brain Science transcriptome atlas, and regional white matter connectivity loss at three time points over 24 months in subjects with premanifest Huntington’s disease relative to control participants. The baseline cohort included 72 premanifest Huntington’s disease participants and 85 healthy control participants. Results: We show that loss of corticostriatal, interhemispheric, and intrahemispheric white matter connections at baseline and over 24 months in premanifest Huntington’s disease is associated with gene expression profiles enriched for synaptic genes and metabolic genes. Corticostriatal gene expression profiles are predominately associated with motor, parietal, and occipital regions, while interhemispheric expression profiles are associated with frontotemporal regions. We also show that genes with known abnormal transcription in human Huntington’s disease and animal models are overrepresented in synaptic gene expression profiles, but not in metabolic gene expression profiles. Conclusions: These findings suggest a dual mechanism of white matter vulnerability in Huntington’s disease, in which abnormal transcription of synaptic genes and metabolic disturbance not related to transcription may drive white matter loss.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2020 France EnglishPublisher:HAL CCSD Funded by:FWF | The origin of pelagic cal...FWF| The origin of pelagic calcification and its influence on seawater chemistryDemangel, Isaline; Kovacs, Agnes Zsofia; Richoz, Sylvain; Gardin, Silvia; Krystyn, Leopold; Baldermann, Andre; Piller, Werner;International audience; Calcareous nannofossils are considered to be the most productive calcifying organisms, but the impact of their emergence on the chemistry of the ocean in the Late Triassic is not understood yet.

No evidence of a signal is found in the data; seven events are selected, in agreement with the expectation of 7.2 events from background processes. This observation results in an improved lower limit on the mass of the Higgs boson: m_H > 87.9GeV/c^2 at 95% confidence level.

Tomographic measurements on 10 October 1996, showing a narrow, field-aligned enhancement in electron density in the post-noon sector of the dayside auroral zone, are related to a temporal increase in the plasma concentration observed by the incoherent scatter radar in the region where the HF radar indicated a low velocity sunwards convection. The results demonstrate the complementary nature of these three instruments for polar-cap ionospheric studies.Key words.
