description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2008 FrancePublisher:Copernicus GmbH Higuchi, K.; Fujisawa, K.; Tohei, M.; Okawa, S.; Shimomura, H.; Sakata, T.;Abstract. Sediments produced by a slope failure of the toe of a landslide are assumed to prevent the spread of the failure. Thus, sediment removal is an emergency measure that must be done safely while the slope is observed. Observation must also be done safely without requiring workers to enter the failed slope to avoid secondary disasters. Generally, a non-prism type totalstation is useful to measure ground displacement under such circumstances, because this type of totalstation can be used without placing targets on the slope. However, the lack of prisms results in problems related to the objectivity of measurement data, collimation error of the totalstation, measurement at night, and so on. The authors have developed targets and a remote target placing method in order to resolve the above problems. As a result, we have established remote measurement technique for ground displacement on failed slopes at the toes of landslides. This paper describes the measurement technique that has been developed.

Daily and summer mean and maximum concentrations were computed based on hourly mean values, and cumulative ozone exposure indices (Accumulated exposure Over a Threshold of 40 ppb (AOT40), AOT20) were calculated. The diurnal profiles showed a characteristic pattern in most city centres, with minimum values in the early morning hours, a strong rise during the morning, peak concentrations in the afternoon, and a decline during the night. The widest amplitudes between minimum and maximum values were found in central and southern European cities such as Du¨ sseldorf, Verona, Klagenfurt, Lyon or Barcelona. In the northern European cities of Edinburgh and Copenhagen, by contrast, maximum values were lower and diurnal variation was much smaller. Based on ozone concentrations as well as on cumulative exposure indices, a clear north–south gradient in ozone pollution, with increasing levels from northern and northwestern sites to central and southern European sites, was observed. Only the Spanish cities did not fit this pattern; there, ozone levels were again lower than in central European cities, probably due to the direct influence of strong car traffic emissions. In general, ozone concentrations and cumulative exposure were significantly higher at suburban sites than at urban and traffic-exposed sites. When applying the newly established European Union (EU) Directive on ozone pollution in ambient air, it was demonstrated that the target value for the protection of human health was regularly surpassed at urban as well as suburban sites, particularly in cities in Austria, France, northern Italy and southern Germany. European target values and long-term objectives for the protection of vegetation expressed as AOT40 were also exceeded at many monitoring sites.

This large-scale variation provides an ideal opportunity to test the oroclinal-bending hypothesis using palaeomagnetic methods, which we have attempted by drilling the Lower Triassic Daye Formation limestones in western Hubei Province. Thermal demagnetization isolated two components in most samples. A low unblocking temperature component (400 °C , unblocks univectorially towards the origin. The HTC passes the McFadden-fold test with an overall mean tilt-corrected direction of Dec = 255°, Inc =-24° (N= 7, α95= 9°) . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations suggest an early diagenetic, possible (bio)chemical origin for the magnetic extracts dominated by Ti-poor magnetite. Rock magnetic data show no evidence that the HTC has been affected by tectonic or compaction strain. Our data together with previously published results suggest a general clockwise rotation pattern in the Middle Yangtze fold belt, which is probably related to the collision between the North and SCBs. Comparison of palaeomagnetic rotations with fold axis trends in the fold belt suggests that about 30° clockwise rotation occurred in the Middle reaches of the Yangtze River, while a 15° difference in fold axis trends would be due to initial variation within the fold belt. However, since little is known about the timing of the clockwise rotation, whether the Middle Yangtze fold belt is an orocline awaits further studies.

García; +1 AuthorsJesica Murray; María Angélica Romero Orué; Emilce de las Mercedes López; Víctor H. García; Alicia Kirschbaum;Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality. The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater. This is of high importance in Latin American territories with high As concentration in groundwater such as Argentina. Fil: Murray, Jesica María. Postlethwaite; M. A. Morales Maqueda; V. Le Fouest; G. R. Tattersall; Jason Holt; Andrew J. Willmott;Abstract. Ocean tides are not explicitly included in many ocean general circulation models, which will therefore omit any interactions between tides and the cryosphere. We present model simulations of the wind and buoyancy driven circulation and tides of the Barents and Kara Seas, using a 25 km × 25 km 3-D ocean circulation model coupled to a dynamic and thermodynamic sea ice model. The modeled tidal amplitudes are compared with tide gauge data and sea ice extent is compared with satellite data. Including tides in the model is found to have little impact on overall sea ice extent but is found to delay freeze up and hasten the onset of melting in tidally active coastal regions. The impact that including tides in the model has on the salt budget is investigated and found to be regionally dependent. The vertically integrated salt budget is dominated by lateral advection. This increases significantly when tides are included in the model in the Pechora Sea and around Svalbard where tides are strong. Tides increase the salt flux from sea ice by 50% in the Pechora and White Seas but have little impact elsewhere. This study suggests that the interaction between ocean tides and sea ice should not be neglected when modeling the Arctic.

New particle formation in the atmosphere produces around half of the cloud condensation nuclei that seed cloud droplets. Such particles have a pivotal role in determining the properties of clouds and the global radiation balance. Dunne et al. used the CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber at CERN to construct a model of aerosol formation based on laboratory measured nucleation rates. They found that nearly all nucleation involves either ammonia or biogenic organic compounds. Furthermore in the present day atmosphere cosmic ray intensity cannot meaningfully affect climate via nucleation.Science this issue p. 1119Fundamental questions remain about the origin of newly formed atmospheric aerosol particles because data from laboratory measurements have been insufficient to build global models. In contrast gas phase chemistry models have been based on laboratory kinetics measurements for decades. We built a global model of aerosol formation by using extensive laboratory measurements of rates of nucleation involving sulfuric acid ammonia ions and organic compounds conducted in the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber. The simulations and a comparison with atmospheric observations show that nearly all nucleation throughout the present day atmosphere involves ammonia or biogenic organic compounds in addition to sulfuric acid. A considerable fraction of nucleation involves ions but the relatively weak dependence on ion concentrations indicates that for the processes studied variations in cosmic ray intensity do not appreciably affect climate through nucleation in the present day atmosphere.U http://science.sciencemag.org/content/sci/354/6316/1119.full.pdf

L.; Pan, C. J.; Röttger, J.; Anandan, V. K.;Chen, C. L.; Pan, C. J.; Röttger, J.; Anandan, V. K.;Abstract. This paper presents observations of low-altitude mid-latitude E-region irregularities obtained with the 52-MHz Chung-Li VHF radar. These are carried out in the interferometer mode to investigate the behavior of these irregularities over time and space. The observations presented here show the characteristics of type-II echoes noted by a negative slope, i.e. they are approaching the radar as a function of time. The range-time-intensity (RTI) plots obtained through power spectrum analysis reveal the quasi-periodic striations, which are known as LQP (Low-altitude QP) echoes. Our interferometer analysis allows one to investigate the motion (i.e. "tracking") of the LQP echo patches in three dimensions. This method is superior to just evaluating the variations of the echo power as a function of range and time in the standard RTI-plots. By applying this method, we show that the echo patches in different striations remain at almost the same altitude when we trace the isolated echoing regions until they disappear from the radar view. We further compare the rate of change of the range (range rate dR/dt) by two techniques: one by simply measuring the varying slope of the LQP echoes from RTI plot, the other by tracking the three-dimensional locations of the LQP scatterers by using the interferometer technique. We finally prove that the changes in range as a function of time, deduced from the interferometer technique, are significantly correlated with those of the standard range rate analysis. However, the standard range rate analysis does not provide information about the correct location and the variation of the LQP irregularities. The three-dimensional analysis, which we introduced for tracking individual striations, shows that LQP echo patches are confined to between 98 and 100km altitude. This suggests that the irregularities which cause the LQP echoes drifted through the radar beam at approximately constant altitude, which we tend to attribute to a region of large-scale vertical shear of the horizontal wind.

The purpose of this study is the analysis of radar data, digitally recorded, during an operational hail suppression program in the region of Central Macedonia, Greece, for the warm period of the years 1997–2001. Kinematic characteristics, such as lifetime and distance traveled by hailstorms, as well as direction of motion and speed, have been related to type of storms and season. It has been found that singlecells are short-lived and travel short distances, while multicells are long-lived and travel long distances. On the contrary, their corresponding speed distributions are similar. The deviation of the direction of motion from mean wind is smaller for singlecells than for multicells. September and July exhibit the maximum and minimum average storm speeds as a direct implication of synoptic disturbances passage and convection, prevailing respectively. Finally, storms overcoming orographic barriers decelerate in general on the windward side and accelerate on the lee side of mountains.

Unexpectedly, we find that the X-ray emission associated with the cluster experienced a marked brightening in March/April 2007. We investigate the origin of both the X-ray continuum emission emanating from the star cluster and the flare. To study the time variability of the total X-ray flux, we stacked the PN and MOS data of observations performed within a time interval of a few days leading to the detection of the flaring episode. We then constructed two spectral datasets, one corresponding to the flare interval (March/April 2007) and another to the normal quiescent state of the source. The X-ray light curve of the Arches cluster shows, with high significance (8.6 sigma), a 70% increase in the X-ray emission in the March/April 2007 timeframe followed by a decline over the following year to the pre-flare level; the short-term duration of the flare is constrained to be longer than four days. The temperature and the line-of-sight column density inferred from the flare spectrum do not differ from those measured in the normal activity state of the cluster, suggesting that the flux enhancement is thermal in origin. We attribute the X-ray variability to in situ stellar activity: early-type stars may be responsible for the flare via wind collisions, whereas late-type stars may contribute by means of magnetic reconnection. These two possibilities are discussed. 6 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in A&AL

Several studies have described the main physical processes and induced surface patterns using 1D and 3D modelling, as well as in situ measurements. Previous models were applied at the mesoscale without taking into account the lagoon. Using a recently developed 3D coupled physical-biogeochemical model that considers the complex ocean-lagoon interface, we aim to understand better the impact of the upwelling on the lagoon. The model was found to be in good agreement with measured data reported in previous publications about two upwelling events. However, in general, levels of surface chlorophyll-a were overestimated by the model in the upwelling area when compared to ocean colour data and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the discrepancy. We then tracked rich upwelled water using a forward Lagrangian transport analysis. Upwelled waters from the upper nutricline were found to be able to reach the South West lagoon. An anti-cyclonic eddy was detected near the upwelling area, potentially responsible, in part, for the rich water intrusions into the lagoon.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2008 FrancePublisher:Copernicus GmbH Higuchi, K.; Fujisawa, K.; Tohei, M.; Okawa, S.; Shimomura, H.; Sakata, T.;Abstract.
