The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is involved in the E-Cabin project, which aims to create a futuristic and intelligent cabin in order both to improve the well- being and satisfaction of passengers and to minimize the on-board waste by using advanced consumption control.

Multilingualism is a cultural cornerstone of Europe and firmly anchored in the European treaties including full language equality. However, language barriers impacting business, cross-lingual and cross-cultural communication are still omnipresent. Language Technologies (LTs) are a powerful means to break down these barriers. While the last decade has seen various initiatives that created a multitude of approaches and technologies tailored to Europe's specific needs, there is still an immense level of fragmentation. At the same time, AI has become an increasingly important concept in the European Information and Communication Technology area. For a few years now, AI, including many opportunities, synergies but also misconceptions, has been overshadowing every other topic. We present an overview of the European LT landscape, describing funding programmes, activities, actions and challenges in the different countries with regard to LT, including the current state of play in industry and the LT market. We present a brief overview of the main LT-related activities on the EU level in the last ten years and develop strategic guidance with regard to four key dimensions. With the increasingly rapid growth of data in life sciences we are witnessing a major transition in the way research is conducted, from hypothesis-driven studies to data-driven simulations of whole systems. Such approaches necessitate the use of large-scale computational resources and e-infrastructures, such as the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). EGI, one of key the enablers of the digital European Research Area, is a federation of resource providers set up to deliver sustainable, integrated and secure computing services to European researchers and their international partners. Here we aim to provide the state of the art of Grid/Cloud computing in EU research as viewed from within the field of life sciences, focusing on key infrastructures and projects within the life sciences community. Rather than focusing purely on the technical aspects underlying the currently provided solutions, we outline the design aspects and key characteristics that can be identified across major research approaches. Overall, we aim to provide significant insights into the road ahead by establishing ever-strengthening connections between EGI as a whole and the life sciences community. Domain Adaptation (DA) techniques aim at enabling machine learning methods learn effective classifiers for a "target'' domain when the only available training data belongs to a different "source'' domain. In this paper we present the Distributional Correspondence Indexing (DCI) method for domain adaptation in sentiment classification. DCI derives term representations in a vector space common to both domains where each dimension reflects its distributional correspondence to a pivot, i.e., to a highly predictive term that behaves similarly across domains. Term correspondence is quantified by means of a distributional correspondence function (DCF). We propose a number of efficient DCFs that are motivated by the distributional hypothesis, i.e., the hypothesis according to which terms with similar meaning tend to have similar distributions in text. Experiments show that DCI obtains better performance than current state-of-the-art techniques for cross-lingual and cross-domain sentiment classification. DCI also brings about a significantly reduced computational cost, and requires a smaller amount of human intervention. As a final contribution, we discuss a more challenging formulation of the domain adaptation problem, in which both the cross-domain and cross-lingual dimensions are tackled simultaneously.

The DESIR Winter School "Shaping new approaches to data management in arts and humanities" took place in Lisbon on 10-13 December 2019. The event was hosted by NOVA FCSH University facilities and was organised in the framework of the Horizon 2020 funded project DESIR (DARIAH ERIC Sustainability Refined). It aimed at gathering PhD students, arts and humanities scholars from all career stages and research managers interested in the issues raised by sustainable practices to open up data in the arts and humanities. The event was a joint organisation between DARIAH and NOVA FCSH. As such, it brought together the collaboration of national and European experts in the data management field.Sharing knowledge, research outputs and other scholarly resources in ways that are tuned for long-term availability and maximal use and reuse are recognized as essential practices but also key challenges for arts and humanities research. In the last couple of years, this need has also been recognized in a strong political drive in the European Union giving rise to support structures but also policy imperatives for research data management. As a result, Research data management emerged to be a new field of expertise to explore and establish in all range of disciplines.The fact that the concept of data in the arts and humanities domain is far from being a straightforward one adds further complexities to the implementation of such policies in the arts and humanities domain. To meaningfully address the real data needs of the diverse communities of arts and humanities scholars in terms of skills, infrastructure and best practices, we need to keep a reflexive and open exchange about the function of data inspecific research questions and fields of enquiry.The DESIR Winter School provided a unique opportunity for arts and humanities scholars as well as for librarians and research managers to learn about how to maximize the potential of their scholarly resources and to take practical steps in opening up their research in ethically and legally responsible ways. To this end, the DESIR Winter School covered a wide selection of topics ranging from the optimal implementation of FAIR data in the arts and humanities, issues around ethics, Intellectual Property Rights and licensing, data and software citation practices, open research notebooks and innovative publishing practices in the arts and humanities.The main goals of the Winter School were to:• Introduce scientific and academic communities in the arts and humanities to the principles and practices of responsible research and Open Science;• Strengthen the skills of the arts and humanities communities in research data management, curation, sharing, preservation and reuse;• Enable R&D and Higher Education institutions to develop research data strategies and policies;• Foster national and international collaboration amongst the diverse research communities in the arts and humanities;• Introduce participants to innovative publishing practices in the arts and humanities, such as data journals, overlay journals etc.

One of the main goals of the PARTHENOS project (Pooling Activities, Resources and Tools for Heritage E-research Networking, Optimization and Synergies - EC-H2020-RIA grant agreement 654119) is to bridge existing DHIs by forming a federation where researchers of different sectors of the Humanities can collaborate, share data, services and tools in an integrated environment. PARTHENOS will produce a complete technical framework for the federation, enabling transparent access to resources managed by different DHIs and enabling the creation and operation of Virtual Research Environments where researchers with different backgrounds can collaborate on specific research topics.

The Wireless Network Laboratory at ISTI-CNR studies how to exploit mobility and sociality of people in a mobile social network in order to advertise and discover the services provided by devices. This problem is commonly referred to as service discovery. An efficient strategy for advertising to other devices about the existence of new or existing services is proposed alongside a strategy for discovering a specific service.

OpenAIRE has established itself as a key and sustainable infrastructure for giving access to Open Access publications in Europe and beyond, progressively providing access to datasets, software and other research artefacts. From its outset, OpenAIRE has pursued a service-driven design to engage all stakeholders and the current service portfolio (covering all e-Infrastructure layers) targets a variety of users, namely researchers, content providers, funders and research communities. OpenAIRE infrastructure is currently able to deliver a set of relevant services for content providers managers. The OpenAIRE Literature Broker Service is a tool operating on top of the OpenAIRE information graph and supports repository managers with a web dashboard where they can monitor all their repositories and can view the enrichments suggested by the information graph. Funders can currently benefit from a set of services to monitor research outputs and impact and to integrate a body of resources in their ecosystems. OpenAIRE has now successfully applied the model and services developed for the European Commission to other funders, mainly from European Union. OpenAIRE is working closely with existing Research Infrastructures and research communities to extend its service portfolio by introducing two new services implementing the concept of “Open Science as a Service”: Research Community Dashboard and Catch-All Broker Service. OpenAIRE-Advance, the new phase of OpenAIRE infrastructure, continues the mission of OpenAIRE to support the Open Access and Open Data mandates in Europe.
