Integrating interdisciplinary concepts and methods ,FWF| Mapping, monitoring and modelling the dynamics of land surface morphologyAuthors: Z. Dabiri; D. Hölbling; L. Abad; D. Tiede;Z. Dabiri; D. Hölbling; L. Abad; D. Tiede;Abstract. On July 7, 2018, a large landslide occurred at the eastern slope of the Fagraskógarfjall Mountain in Hítardalur valley in West Iceland. The landslide dammed the river, led to the formation of a lake and, consequently, to a change in the river course. The main focus of this research is to develop a knowledge-based expert system using an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach for identifying morphology changes caused by the Hítardalur landslide. We use synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing data, in particular from Sentinel-1/2 for detection of the landslide and its effects on the river system. We extracted and classified the landslide area, the landslide-dammed lake, other lakes and the river course using intensity information from S1 and spectral information from S2 in the object-based framework. Future research will focus on further developing this approach to support mapping and monitoring of the spatio-temporal dynamics of surface morphology in an object-based framework by combining SAR and optical data. The results can reveal details on the applicability of different remote sensing data for the spatio-temporal investigation of landslides, landslide-induced river course changes and lake formation and lead to a better understanding of the impact of large landslides on river systems.

The geomorphology of loess plateaus continuously evolves with gully erosion. It is very hard to simulate geomorphic evolution in history, especially considering longer time spans, because of the lack of ancient geographic information. However, historical documents and archaeological sites are providing indispensable information about the past world. Using the remains of Wucheng in the Shanxi Province in China as the study area, we explored the possibility of combining UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) photogrammetry and GNSS (global navigation satellite system) measurements for modelling current terrain as well as ancient terrain with the help of archaeological surveying. Finally, current and ancient topography were modelled and the soil erosion was assessed. We believe our work can provide a clear workflow for terrain modelling in archaeological sites and may offer new ideas for landform evolution studies.

Kieffer; K. Khoshelham;M. Bitenc; D. S. Kieffer; K. Khoshelham;Abstract. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) greatly facilitates the acquisition of detailed and accurate 3D measurements of remote rock outcrops, at an operational range from several meters to a few kilometres. Reliable, quantitative measures of rock discontinuity roughness are necessary to characterize and evaluate the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of the rock mass. The aim of this research is to investigate the TLS potential and limitations for a reliable estimation of small scale roughness. TLS data noise and resolution define the level of extractable morphological detail, and therefore need to be known and associated with roughness value. The stationary variant of Discrete Wavelet Transform (SWT) was applied to estimate TLS noise level and perform wavelet denoising in direction of range measurements. Denoised TLS data were compared to reference surfaces of decreasing resolution (reference grids) in order to define the size of extractable surface detail. Noise and resolution effect on rock surface roughness, wavelet denoising success and extractable roughness scale were investigated with comparative analyses of TLS and reference surfaces. The developed methodology enabled reasonable TLS noise estimation, improved capabilities of TLS for modelling fine features of an irregular rock surface, and indicated the surface scale that can be reliably extracted from the TLS data.

Winkler; W. T. Pfeffer; K. Hanke;M. Winkler; W. T. Pfeffer; K. Hanke;Abstract. The glaciers on the summit plateau of Kibo, the main peak of the Kilimanjaro massif (3°S, 37°E, 5895 m a.s.l.) in Tanzania, are characterized by steep ice cliffs at their margins. These form-persistent cliffs continuously retreat and, consequently, govern the decrease in plateau glacier area. In order to quantify the ice cliff recession and study their morphology, close-range terrestrial photogrammetry combined with automatic stereo matching techniques was used to derive high resolution digital surface models of a south-facing “sample cliff” at four different dates. Results confirm, firstly, the annually bimodal nature of the recession being 15 cm/month during a 4.5 month sunlit phase and 2 cm/month during the remaining 7.5 month shaded phase, and, secondly, the tendency towards an “ideal cliff orientation”, which is either south- or north-facing and about 70°-75° steep. Moreover, the hypothesis of a predefined decay period for the plateau ice is supported by this study and it is shown that terrestrial photogrammetry is not only cheap and lightweight but also very suitable for ice surveys at the decameter scale.

Rock glaciers are creep phenomena of mountain permafrost. Typically, these landforms look like lava flows from a bird’s eye view. Active rock glaciers move downslope with flow velocities in the range of few centimeters to several meters per year. Thus, large masses of rock and ice can be gradually transported down-valley. In this paper we present a comparative study analyzing surface change for Tschadinhorn rock glacier, a relatively fast moving rock glacier located in the Hohe Tauern Range of the Austrian Alps. Aerial photographs (1954–2017) of both metric (conventional) and non-metric (UAV-based) aerial surveys were compared to derive multi-annual to annual flow vector fields and surface height change. For each time interval given we computed a single representative value for flow velocity and, if applicable, also for area-wide surface height change, i.e. volume change. The velocity graph obtained represents the temporal evolution of the kinematics of the rock glacier with good discrimination. Volume change was difficult to quantify since temporal changes were rather small and close to insignificance. The precision and accuracy of the results obtained were numerically quantified. Our study showed that for the Tschadinhorn rock glacier UAV-based aerial surveys can substitute conventional aerial surveys as carried out by national mapping agencies, such as the Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV). Thus, UAV-based aerial surveys can help to bridge the data gap between regular aerial surveys. The high accuracy of the UAV-derived results would even allow intra-annual change detection of flow velocity.

Mandlburger; J. Kremer; F. Steinbacher; R. Baran; In this contribution, we report on an experimental airborne data acquisition with two medium format cameras (Coastal Blue, RGB) and a topo-bathymetric laser scanner for capturing the bathymetry of a dozen of groundwater supplied lakes located near Augsburg, Germany. The specific research question was to investigate whether the use of high-resolution Coastal Blue imagery (λ = 400–460 nm) provides added value for mapping bathymetry and characterization of water bottom features. While data processing is still in progress, preliminary results indicate that the blue (λ = 420–500 nm) and green (λ = 490–570 nm) color channels of the RGB camera are better suited for estimating bathymetry, but the Coastal Blue channel adds an additional water penetrating band increasing the number of useful band combinations with a positive effect on the water bottom classification capabilities. Whereas Coastal Blue channels are rather used from satellite platforms (Landsat 8, WorldView-2) with spatial resolutions in the meter range, our experiment aims at using higher resolution Coastal Blue imagery with a ground sampling distance of around 5 cm enabling not only spectrally based shallow water depth mapping but also the application of multi-media photogrammetry in high spatial resolution. To the best of our knowledge the use of high-resolution Coastal Blue captured from airborne platforms is novel in the context of mapping shallow water bathymetry.

Integrating interdisciplinary concepts and methodsZ. Dabiri; D. Hölbling; L. Abad; G. Prasicek; G. Prasicek; A.-L. Argentin; T.-T. Tsai;Abstract. In August 2009, Typhoon Morakot caused a record-breaking rainfall in Taiwan. The heavy rainfall triggered thousands of landslides, in particular in the central-southern part of the island. Large landslides can block rivers and can lead to the formation of landslide-dammed lakes. Cascading hazards like floods and debris flows after landslide dam breaches pose a high risk for people and infrastructure downstream. Thus, better knowledge about landslides that significantly impact the channel system and about the resulting landslide-dammed lakes are key elements for assessing the direct and indirect hazards caused by the moving mass. The main objectives of this study are 1) to develop an object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach for semi-automated detection of landslides that caused the formation of landslide-dammed lakes and 2) to monitor the evolution of landslide-dammed lakes based on Landsat imagery. For landslide and lake mapping, primarily spectral indices and contextual information were used. By integrating morphological and hydrological parameters derived from a digital elevation model (DEM) into the OBIA framework, we automatically identified landslide-dammed lakes, and the landslides that likely caused the formation of those lakes, due to the input of large amounts of debris into the channel system. The proposed approach can be adapted to other remote sensing platforms and can be used to monitor the evolution of landslide-dammed lakes and triggering landslides at regional scale after typhoon and heavy rainstorm events within an efficient time range after suitable remote sensing data has been provided.

Kaufmann;Abstract. Rock glaciers are creep phenomena of mountain permafrost and are composed of ice and rocks. Active rock glaciers move downslope by force of gravity. Maximum creep/flow velocities of individual rock glaciers may vary from a few centimeters up to several meters per year, depending on the underlying terrain, mechanical parameters of the material involved, etc. Inter-annual variation of rock glacier flow has been observed and attributed to various reasons, e.g., climate change. It is believed that the observed warming of the atmosphere accelerates rock glacier flow. This paper proposes a method for detecting active rock glaciers and, where applicable, quantifying their movement relatively or absolutely using multi-temporal image data (i.e., high-resolution orthoimages/orthophotos) of virtual globes, such as Google Maps and Microsoft Bing Maps. The present work was originally triggered by the task of detecting all active rock glaciers of a larger mountain region, i.e., the western part of the Schober Mountains located in the Austrian Hohe Tauern range. In support of this task the proposed method was additionally applied to two well-studied rock glaciers, i.e., Hinteres Langtalkar (eastern part of the Schober Mountains) and Äußeres Hochebenkar (Ötztal Alps, Austria). In this paper we present the results obtained from the two rock glaciers. It can be summarized that change detection and consequently the high-precision measurement of flow velocities of active rock glaciers using image data (screen shots) of virtual globes (geobrowsers) is possible. It must be admitted, however, that the proposed method has some obvious drawbacks: (a) limited availability of high-resolution image data in high mountain areas, (b) limited availability of multi-temporal image data, (c) lack of information about exact acquisition dates or source of image data, (d) lack of information about the accuracy of the image data (orthophotos), and (e) potential legal obstacles to using the image data.

To date multi-temporal 3D point clouds from close-range sensing are used for landslide and erosion monitoring in an operational manner. Morphological changes are typically derived by calculating distances between points from different acquisition epochs. The identification of the underlying processes resulting in surface changes, however, is often challenging, for example due to the complex surface structures and influences from seasonal vegetation dynamics. We present an approach for object-based 3D landslide monitoring based on topographic LiDAR point cloud time series separating specific surface change types automatically. The workflow removes vegetation and relates surface changes derived from a point cloud time series directly to (i) geomorphological object classes (landslide scarp, eroded area, deposit) and (ii) to individual, spatially contiguous objects (such as parts of the landslide scarp and clods of material moving in the landslide). We apply this approach to a time series of nine point cloud epochs from a slope affected by two shallow landslides. A parameter test addresses the influence of the registration error and the associated level of detection on the magnitude of derived object changes. The results of our case study are in accordance with field observations at the test site as well as conceptual landslide models, where retrogressive erosion of the scarp and downslope movement of the sliding mass are major principles of secondary landslide development. We conclude that the presented methods are well suited to extract information on geomorphological process dynamics from the complex point clouds and aggregate it at different levels of abstraction to assist landslide and erosion assessment.
