Guha;Abstract. Natural Resources extraction for production of goods increases the stress on land and on the environment. Coal Mines are the primary source for energy production. This process increases the continuous deformation on land by disturbing equilibrium beneath the surface. Interferometry techniques have a capability to detect the minute deformation with millimetre precision on the ground using microwave SAR data. The study area covers the largest open cast coal mines of Asia. In this study for minute deformation identification, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) technique has been used. Research focuses on the application of PSInSAR technique for terrain deformation detection using 17 SAR scene of Korba, Chhattisgarh, India acquired by the Sentinel-1 satellite of European Space Agency. This technique is capable to monitor the minute deformation in the coal mines of Korba, Chhattisgarh, India. The results predicted that the area is deformed with the velocity up to 30 mm/year in the coal mines and surroundings areas. The PSInSAR technique with the Sentinel-1 data provides the proficient tool for deformation monitoring in coal mines of Korba.

Stability analysis and studying the geological features of rocks and mines have been active research topic for many years. Consequently, it is very important being prepared for probable hazards and having the ability to rescue from earth disasters, in particular in rocks and open pit mines. For this purpose, several methods have been used to measure fractures of a rock face. Among these methods are manual techniques, photogrammetric measurements, and laser scanning based techniques. With the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), these systems have been widely used in geological projects recently. Especially in the situation that the case study is very hard to be reached. In this paper, a method is developed to detect the most probable rock fall. After doing some pre-processing, RANSAC algorithm is used to fit planes to the point cloud. Then, intersections of these planes with the point cloud are computed. After some refinements on these intersections, the probable rockfalls are obtained. Point cloud analysis have some advantages over conventional image-based methods; especially in case of probable rock falls, which might be hard to detect using the rock images. However, analyzing point cloud data usually is complicated and computationally expensive.

The focus of this paper is to comparatively evaluate the performance of ASTER and Hyperion data for target detection of hydrothermal alteration zones associated with geothermal (GT) springs in an unexplored savannah region. The study employed the partial subpixel unmixing Mixture Tuned Match Filtering algorithm for spectral information extraction using the multispectral and hyperspectral satellite data. In both cases, image endmember spectra specifically for kaolinite, alunite, and illite and calcite zones were selected and extracted by using the Analytical Imaging and Geophysics (AIG)-developed processing methods. The results show that the Hyperion, despite its distortions, can effectively discriminate associated alteration zones better than ASTER. Consequently, Hyperspectral data and analysis are thus recommended for use in similar unexplored regions for GT resource detection and monitoring.

The ancient Xi’an, China, has been suffering severe land subsidence and ground fissure hazards since the 1960s, which has affected the safety of Subways. Multi-sensor SAR data are conducted to monitor the latest complex ground deformation and its influence on subway line No.3 over Xi’an. Annual deformation rates have been retrieved to reveal the spatiotemporal evolution of ground subsidence in Xi’an city from 2013 to 2017. Meanwhile, the correlation between land subsidence and ground fissures are analyzed by retrieving the deformation differences in both sides of the fissures. Besides, the deformation along subway line No. 3 is analyzed, and the fast deformation section is quantitatively studied. Finally, a flat lying sill model with distributed contractions is implemented to model the InSAR deformation over YHZ subsidence center, which manifests that the ground deformation is mainly caused by groundwater withdrawal.

Liu; R. Li; R. Li; X. Tong; X. Tong;Abstract. The floating ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic Ice Sheet is important for the stability of the grounded ice-sheet. Fracturing and calving event of an ice shelf can damage the structural integrity and contributes to an increase in ice discharge to the ocean. In this study, we focus on two large newly-developed traverse rifts in the frontal region of Filchner Ice Shelf which may lead to next major calving in the region. Two-dimensional evolution of the two rifts were investigated in detail using multisource remote sensing data, Two abrupt extensions in 2006 and 2011 were found with a rate of more than 1 km d-1. Moreover, a stereo pair of ZY-3 images was utilized for the first time to reconstruct the 3D rift model where an average rift depth of 48 m and ice mélange rise of ~10 m were measured.

Now spanning five simultaneous open-pit operations with exploration carried out through open pit benching, Carajás complex encompasses the world´s largest iron reserves. Open pit mining operations in the area can lead to slope instabilities with risks to personnel, equipment and production due to intense excavations in rock products of low geomechanical quality, blasting practices and heavy precipitation. Thus, an effective prediction and management of surface deformations should be a key concern for the mining operations. The ground displacement monitoring techniques in Carajás include surface measurement techniques at discrete points (total station/reflective prisms) and over area using SSR (Slope Stability Radar, a ground based radar). On the other hand, DInSAR techniques are receiving relevance in the mining industry for reasons such a synoptic and continuous coverage without the need for ground instrumentation and a point-to-point good accuracy of measuring displacements (millimeter to centimeter scale) over a dense grid. Using a stack of 33 StripMap TerraSAR-X images acquired over Carajás covering the time span from March 2012 to April 2013, a monitoring approach is discussed based on the complementary use of information provided by DInSAR (DInSAR Time-Series and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) and surface measuring techniques (total station/prisms, ground-based radar).

The aim of this project is to create the required framework to allow the transformation of the Canning River location survey data captured by Dr. J. A. Ludwig Preiss from 1841 into today’s maps and to utilise visualisation techniques to analyse the results. The original survey data includes distances and bearing observations as well as 14 historical maps. Firstly, the old survey data (includes distances and angles measurements) is plotted into a local coordinates system using modern surveying software (MAGNET Office). Then, common points (unchanged locations) are identified by comparison with the plotted and the current paths of the river. A similarity and affine transformation are used to find transformation parameters that allow to geo-locate the plotted river into the current geodetic datum (MGA94). The calculated Root Mean Squared Errors (RMSE) are 21.7 m and 21.1 m obtained by geo-locating the common points using similarity and affine transformation, respectively. For geo-referencing the historical maps, the similarity, projective and Thin Plate Spline (TPS) transformations have been applied. It has been found that one point of interest (referred to as Nairn’s house), which was drawn in one of the historical maps, still exists today (now known as Maddington Homestead). The distances from the actual position of Nairn’s house to its position in the georeferenced maps using similarity, projective and TPS are 11.8 m, 13 m, and 14 m respectively. All the gained information and map details are utilised in creating a dynamic visualisation suitable for comparing the generated map and historical map with modern aerial imaging and DTM data.

In this paper we present the initial results of PAZ Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery for the first time. In the study, the potential of repeat-pass high resolution PAZ images were investigated. To this aim, both linear backscatter and interferometric results were presented. We used multi-temporal X-band (3.1 cm wavelength) new generation single look complex (SLC) data from Spanish PAZ in single polarization data. PAZ is based on TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X platform to establish a constellation with them to shorten the revisit time and increase data acquisition capacity. We applied two analysis on PAZ data to assess the performance of the satellite images. For the analysis a semi-arid and almost flat region of Central Anatolia was selected. The images are acquired in both ascending and descending orbits. Each pair has 33 days of temporal baselines. Firstly, backscatter analysis was conducted over the region for different land cover classes. Secondly interferometric analysis was applied to determine phase difference and coherence features. As the region has sand dunes, bareland and uncultivated agricultural fields the coherence analysis showed high values, while cultivated fields showed variations of coherence due to different growth of vegetation. Since the region is prone to sinkhole formation the high-resolution PAZ indicated its advantage as determining a sinkhole that has a circle shape. The displacement of ground surface is determined in line of sight direction.

Multitemporal red-filter High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) images were processed by using the open source NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline in combination with the USGS Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers to produce 0.25 m resolution images as well as a 1 m resolution DTM. The multi-temporal HiRISE images were firstly ortho-rectified by the DTM, and then co-registered by using the Enhanced Correlation Coefficient Maximization (ECC) algorithm. We applied the change detection method on the well-aligned sub-meter scale HiRISE images, which were taken in Mars Year 29 and Mars Year 30, to investigate mass wasting at the scarp area centred at 85.0°N, 151.5°E. The idea of the change detection method is to identify changing shadow patterns based on the grayscale difference between the images. The final results show that erosion events occurred at the full length of this study’s scarp within one Mars Year. However, only the upper and lower part of the scarp show erosion activity, whereas the intermediate parts seem inactive, and this correlates with the slope.

This paper has collected 7 scenes of L band PALSAR sensor radar data of a mine in FengCheng city, jiangxi province, using the Small-baseline Subset (SBAS) method to invert the surface subsidence of the mine. Baselines of interference less than 800m has been chosen to constitute short baseline differential interference atlas, using pixels whose average coherent coefficient was larger than or equal to 0.3 as like high coherent point target, using singular value decomposition (SVD) method to calculate deformation phase sequence based on these high coherent points, and the accumulation of settlements of study area of different period had been obtained, so as to reflect the ground surface settlement evolution of the settlement of the area. The results of the study has showed that: SBAS technology has overcome coherent problem of the traditionality D-InSAR technique, continuous deformation field of surface mining in time dimension of time could been obtained, characteristics of ground surface settlement of mining subsidence in different period has been displayed, so to improve the accuracy and reliability of the monitoring results.

Guha;Abstract. Natural Resources extraction for production of goods increases the stress on land and on the environment. Coal Mines are the primary source for energy production. This process increases the continuous deformation on land by disturbing equilibrium beneath the surface. Interferometry techniques have a capability to detect the minute deformation with millimetre precision on the ground using microwave SAR data. The study area covers the largest open cast coal mines of Asia. In this study for minute deformation identification, Persistent Scatterer Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) technique has been used. Research focuses on the application of PSInSAR technique for terrain deformation detection using 17 SAR scene of Korba, Chhattisgarh, India acquired by the Sentinel-1 satellite of European Space Agency. This technique is capable to monitor the minute deformation in the coal mines of Korba, Chhattisgarh, India. The results predicted that the area is deformed with the velocity up to 30 mm/year in the coal mines and surroundings areas. The PSInSAR technique with the Sentinel-1 data provides the proficient tool for deformation monitoring in coal mines of Korba.

Stability analysis and studying the geological features of rocks and mines have been active research topic for many years. Consequently, it is very important being prepared for probable hazards and having the ability to rescue from earth disasters, in particular in rocks and open pit mines. For this purpose, several methods have been used to measure fractures of a rock face. Among these methods are manual techniques, photogrammetric measurements, and laser scanning based techniques. With the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), these systems have been widely used in geological projects recently. Especially in the situation that the case study is very hard to be reached. In this paper, a method is developed to detect the most probable rock fall. After doing some pre-processing, RANSAC algorithm is used to fit planes to the point cloud. Then, intersections of these planes with the point cloud are computed. After some refinements on these intersections, the probable rockfalls are obtained. Point cloud analysis have some advantages over conventional image-based methods; especially in case of probable rock falls, which might be hard to detect using the rock images. However, analyzing point cloud data usually is complicated and computationally expensive.

The focus of this paper is to comparatively evaluate the performance of ASTER and Hyperion data for target detection of hydrothermal alteration zones associated with geothermal (GT) springs in an unexplored savannah region. The study employed the partial subpixel unmixing Mixture Tuned Match Filtering algorithm for spectral information extraction using the multispectral and hyperspectral satellite data. In both cases, image endmember spectra specifically for kaolinite, alunite, and illite and calcite zones were selected and extracted by using the Analytical Imaging and Geophysics (AIG)-developed processing methods. The results show that the Hyperion, despite its distortions, can effectively discriminate associated alteration zones better than ASTER. Consequently, Hyperspectral data and analysis are thus recommended for use in similar unexplored regions for GT resource detection and monitoring.

The ancient Xi’an, China, has been suffering severe land subsidence and ground fissure hazards since the 1960s, which has affected the safety of Subways. Multi-sensor SAR data are conducted to monitor the latest complex ground deformation and its influence on subway line No.3 over Xi’an. Annual deformation rates have been retrieved to reveal the spatiotemporal evolution of ground subsidence in Xi’an city from 2013 to 2017. Meanwhile, the correlation between land subsidence and ground fissures are analyzed by retrieving the deformation differences in both sides of the fissures. Besides, the deformation along subway line No. 3 is analyzed, and the fast deformation section is quantitatively studied. Finally, a flat lying sill model with distributed contractions is implemented to model the InSAR deformation over YHZ subsidence center, which manifests that the ground deformation is mainly caused by groundwater withdrawal.

Fracturing and calving event of an ice shelf can damage the structural integrity and contributes to an increase in ice discharge to the ocean. In this study, we focus on two large newly-developed traverse rifts in the frontal region of Filchner Ice Shelf which may lead to next major calving in the region. Two-dimensional evolution of the two rifts were investigated in detail using multisource remote sensing data, Two abrupt extensions in 2006 and 2011 were found with a rate of more than 1 km d-1. Moreover, a stereo pair of ZY-3 images was utilized for the first time to reconstruct the 3D rift model where an average rift depth of 48 m and ice mélange rise of ~10 m were measured.

Now spanning five simultaneous open-pit operations with exploration carried out through open pit benching, Carajás complex encompasses the world´s largest iron reserves. Open pit mining operations in the area can lead to slope instabilities with risks to personnel, equipment and production due to intense excavations in rock products of low geomechanical quality, blasting practices and heavy precipitation. Thus, an effective prediction and management of surface deformations should be a key concern for the mining operations. The ground displacement monitoring techniques in Carajás include surface measurement techniques at discrete points (total station/reflective prisms) and over area using SSR (Slope Stability Radar, a ground based radar). On the other hand, DInSAR techniques are receiving relevance in the mining industry for reasons such a synoptic and continuous coverage without the need for ground instrumentation and a point-to-point good accuracy of measuring displacements (millimeter to centimeter scale) over a dense grid. Using a stack of 33 StripMap TerraSAR-X images acquired over Carajás covering the time span from March 2012 to April 2013, a monitoring approach is discussed based on the complementary use of information provided by DInSAR (DInSAR Time-Series and Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) and surface measuring techniques (total station/prisms, ground-based radar).

The aim of this project is to create the required framework to allow the transformation of the Canning River location survey data captured by Dr. J. A. Ludwig Preiss from 1841 into today’s maps and to utilise visualisation techniques to analyse the results. The original survey data includes distances and bearing observations as well as 14 historical maps. Firstly, the old survey data (includes distances and angles measurements) is plotted into a local coordinates system using modern surveying software (MAGNET Office). Then, common points (unchanged locations) are identified by comparison with the plotted and the current paths of the river. A similarity and affine transformation are used to find transformation parameters that allow to geo-locate the plotted river into the current geodetic datum (MGA94). The calculated Root Mean Squared Errors (RMSE) are 21.7 m and 21.1 m obtained by geo-locating the common points using similarity and affine transformation, respectively. For geo-referencing the historical maps, the similarity, projective and Thin Plate Spline (TPS) transformations have been applied. It has been found that one point of interest (referred to as Nairn’s house), which was drawn in one of the historical maps, still exists today (now known as Maddington Homestead). The distances from the actual position of Nairn’s house to its position in the georeferenced maps using similarity, projective and TPS are 11.8 m, 13 m, and 14 m respectively. All the gained information and map details are utilised in creating a dynamic visualisation suitable for comparing the generated map and historical map with modern aerial imaging and DTM data.

In this paper we present the initial results of PAZ Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery for the first time. In the study, the potential of repeat-pass high resolution PAZ images were investigated. To this aim, both linear backscatter and interferometric results were presented. We used multi-temporal X-band (3.1 cm wavelength) new generation single look complex (SLC) data from Spanish PAZ in single polarization data. PAZ is based on TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X platform to establish a constellation with them to shorten the revisit time and increase data acquisition capacity. We applied two analysis on PAZ data to assess the performance of the satellite images. For the analysis a semi-arid and almost flat region of Central Anatolia was selected. The images are acquired in both ascending and descending orbits. Each pair has 33 days of temporal baselines. Firstly, backscatter analysis was conducted over the region for different land cover classes. Secondly interferometric analysis was applied to determine phase difference and coherence features. As the region has sand dunes, bareland and uncultivated agricultural fields the coherence analysis showed high values, while cultivated fields showed variations of coherence due to different growth of vegetation. Since the region is prone to sinkhole formation the high-resolution PAZ indicated its advantage as determining a sinkhole that has a circle shape. The displacement of ground surface is determined in line of sight direction.

Fanara; X. Zhang; K. Gwinner; E. Hauber; J. Oberst; J. Oberst;Abstract. We have developed a method for automatically detecting the sources of ice block falls at the Martian north polar scarps. Multitemporal red-filter High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) images were processed by using the open source NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline in combination with the USGS Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers to produce 0.25 m resolution images as well as a 1 m resolution DTM. The multi-temporal HiRISE images were firstly ortho-rectified by the DTM, and then co-registered by using the Enhanced Correlation Coefficient Maximization (ECC) algorithm. We applied the change detection method on the well-aligned sub-meter scale HiRISE images, which were taken in Mars Year 29 and Mars Year 30, to investigate mass wasting at the scarp area centred at 85.0°N, 151.5°E. The idea of the change detection method is to identify changing shadow patterns based on the grayscale difference between the images. The final results show that erosion events occurred at the full length of this study’s scarp within one Mars Year. However, only the upper and lower part of the scarp show erosion activity, whereas the intermediate parts seem inactive, and this correlates with the slope.

This paper has collected 7 scenes of L band PALSAR sensor radar data of a mine in FengCheng city, jiangxi province, using the Small-baseline Subset (SBAS) method to invert the surface subsidence of the mine. Baselines of interference less than 800m has been chosen to constitute short baseline differential interference atlas, using pixels whose average coherent coefficient was larger than or equal to 0.3 as like high coherent point target, using singular value decomposition (SVD) method to calculate deformation phase sequence based on these high coherent points, and the accumulation of settlements of study area of different period had been obtained, so as to reflect the ground surface settlement evolution of the settlement of the area. The results of the study has showed that: SBAS technology has overcome coherent problem of the traditionality D-InSAR technique, continuous deformation field of surface mining in time dimension of time could been obtained, characteristics of ground surface settlement of mining subsidence in different period has been displayed, so to improve the accuracy and reliability of the monitoring results.
