Electric cars have the disadvantage of a limited range, and drivers may experience a range anxiety. This range anxiety can be solved by adding a range extender. But, the range extender should be light so as not to significantly increase the weight of the original vehicle. In urban areas with dense traffic (usually developing countries), the average speed around cities is typically lower than 50km/h. This means, the rolling resistance losses are more important than aerodynamic losses, and a weight reduction results in a bigger electrical range. Therefore, smaller and lighter range extenders are of much interest. The contribution of this paper is to indicate the possibility of range extenders with less than 25 kg with a capacity of 150 to 200 cc to suit a condition where weight counts. In this paper, the cost, environmental and grid impacts of going electric are also discussed. The effect of high altitude and driving style on the performance of an electric vehicle is assessed. The challenges and opportunities of vehicle electrification between countries with decarbonated power generation and fossil fuel dominated power generation are highlighted. Throughout the article, the case of Ethiopia is taken as an example.

Nowadays, more oil and gas transportation pipelines are constructed in areas with permafrost and/or higherseismic activity. These pipelines can be subjected to longitudinal plastic deformations necessitating a strainbased design. Since girth- and seam welds are critical in terms of structural integrity, it is desirable to knowtheir mechanical properties. In a strain based design context, the accurate determination of yield strengthand hardening are necessary. A longitudinally extracted (is parallel to the pipe axis) specimen notched atthe weld region and loaded in tension, in combination with inverse modelling is assumed to be a valuabletool to determine these properties. This notched cross weld test ensures that the largest deformations willoccur at the weld, thereby allowing to fully determine the stress-strain behaviour of the weld metal. Inversemodelling combines experimental full-field strain data with numerical simulations to determine theconstitutive parameters. Strains will be measured experimentally and compared with simulated data. Byminimizing their difference, i.e. a certain cost function, a correspondence is found and the desiredparameters are determined. This paper focuses on one aspect of the inverse modelling framework, thedevelopment of the parametric finite element model.

For cloud enterprise customers that require services on demand, data centers must allocate and partition data center resources in a dynamic fashion. We consider the problem in which a request from an enterprise customer is mapped to a virtual network (VN) that is allocated requiring both bandwidth and compute resources by connecting it from an entry point of a data center to one or more servers, should this data center be selected from multiple geographically distributed data centers. We present a dynamic traffic engineering framework, for which we develop an optimization model based on a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation that a data center operator can use at each review point to optimally assign VN customers. Through a series of studies, we then present results on how different VN customers are treated in terms of request acceptance when each VN class has a different resource requirement. We found that a VN class with a low resource requirement has a low blocking even in heavy traffic, while the VN class with a high resource requirement faces a high service denial. On the other hand, cost for the VN with the highest resource requirement is not always the highest in the heavy traffic because of the significantly high service denial faced by this VN class.

This study aims to compare different factors of user involvement in design in terms of obtained contributions of users, whether positive or negative. Based on the Critical Incidents Technique, we interviewed 23 experts (especially in transportation), asking them to describe their positive and negative experiences when they collaborated with users in design projects. This resulted in the collection of 71 Critical Incidents (40 positive and 31 negative) that were then characterized along 6 coding categories. We conducted a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) on the corresponding contingency table and found two main axes that structured the incidents. The interpretation of the axes indicated that individual user involvement allows obtaining rich information about users' needs whereas collective user involvement allows enhancing user acceptance. Moreover, users involved at later stages of development suggest mainly ideas for service improvement, whereas users involved at earlier stages of innovation suggest creative ideas provided that they are supplied tools to develop their projection skills.

Simulation is a key step for developing these new vehicles. System simulation tools as Simcenter Amesim includes ready-to-use multi-physics libraries in that perspective. A new library is being created based on the Energetic Macroscopic Representation formalism to speed-up the battery electric vehicles (BEV) development process. The paper presents the BEV multi-level simulation where the simulations were done using 3 different levels for the battery models. By using “plug & play” method different BEV model configurations can be built in a fast, precise and systematic way.

A popular mechanism proposed to reduce the consumption aims to put links and line cards to sleep mode during off-peak hours. Such a mechanism, however, decreases the available network capacity and increases the risk of congestion if traffic rises unexpectedly. This paper proposes a solution to rapidly react to network bursts and turn-on sleeping links, which we term as SegmenT Routing based Energy Efficient Traffic Engineering for switching ON (STREETE-ON). The proposed algorithm was implemented in the OMNeT++ network simulator using state-of-art dynamic graph algorithms. In such a way, we achieved execution times of tens of milliseconds for a 50-node network. Experimental results show that STREETE-ON can effectively prevent network congestion, avoid turning-on unneeded links, and preserve good energy-efficiency of the network.

We report on an investigation of Virgo Commissioning run 4 data, dedicated to searching signals of the kind supposed to be emitted by inspiral neutron star binary systems. Given the still relatively limited sensitivity, the goal was to test some of the elements of the analysis chain, using simulated events, hardware and software injected in the data; the test allowed us to also characterize the detector stability during the run, for the purposes of the inspiral event search.

In domains such as avionics, air traffic management or mission systems, being able to quantify the operators' workload under stress, and in potentially demanding physical and mental conditions, is mandatory to anticipate overload and prevent human errors. Current approaches to workload estimation rely mainly on experimentation in simulation as an approach that has proven its efficiency for the identification of bad system and/or user interface design. Even if one cannot expect to totally avoid experimenting, given the complexity of the issue of workload computation, a priori estimation of workload might be an interesting tool to pre-validate a design in order to save some time in the experimentation phase and facilitate the analysis of overload situations that appear during experimentation. Various approaches to the a priori measurement of workload have been proposed: performance-based, physiological and subjective measures. Although performance and physiological measures of workload may be more precise, subjective measures are more practical, easier and less costly to use. For these reasons, they have been applied to many complex domains. The experience, the skills and the level of training of the operator have been identified in the literature as being important human factors. Nevertheless, these parameters have not been deeply analyzed in the context of workload estimation. In this paper, we develop a predictive workload model based on the analysis of the tasks assigned to a human operator. We propose to use mental representations of tasks, human actors, human roles, knowledge and abilities. We then propose to estimate the operator's workload with reference to his experience and training, the load over time and the task complexity. Our approach is illustrated on an airborne maritime surveillance use-case, in the context of the French Medusa project.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2015 FrancePublisher:IEEE Authors: Kbaier Ben Ismail, Dhouha; Grisvard, Olivier;Kbaier Ben Ismail, Dhouha; Grisvard, Olivier;International audience; The measurement of the operators' workload is an important aspect of usage-oriented design of professional systems.
