The aim of this paper is to assess and compare the performance of both high speed 2D and 3D digital image correlation (DIC) configurations in the characterization of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites in high strain rate tension in the transverse direction. The criteria for assessment were in terms of strain resolution and measuring the strain localization within the gauge section. Results showed the high-speed 3D DIC technique has lower strain resolution compared to the high-speed 2D DIC technique. In addition, the analysis of the full strain fields indicated that the 3D DIC technique could accurately locate and measure the concentrations of strains within the gauge section of the tested samples. This work is carried out within the scope of EU H2020 funded EXTREME project

The aim of this paper is to assess two types of tensile sample geometries, namely dog-bone and straight strip, in order to study the tensile behaviour of basalt fibre reinforced composites at high strain rates using the split Hopkinson bar technique. 2D Digital image correlation technique was used to study the distribution of the strain fields within the gauge section at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates. Results showed that for the current experiments and the proposed clamping techniques, both sample geometries fulfilled the requirements of a valid split Hopkinson test, and achieved uniform strain fields within the gauge section. However, classical Hopkinson analysis tends to overestimate the actual strains in the gauge section for both geometries. It is, therefore, important to use a local deformation measurement when using these 2 geometries with the proposed clamping technique. Summarization: With an increasing number of low-grade primary ores starting to be cost-effectively mined, we are at the verge of mining a myriad of low-grade primary and secondary mineral materials. At the same time, mining practices and mineral waste recycling are both evolving towards sustainable near-zero-waste processing of low-grade resources within a circular economy that requires a shift in business models, policies and improvements in process technologies. This review discusses the evolution towards low-grade primary ore and secondary raw material mining that will allow for sufficient supply of critical raw materials as well as base metals. Seven low-grade ores, including primary (Greek and Polish laterites) and secondary (fayalitic slags, jarosite and goethite sludges, zinc rich waste treatment sludge and chromium-rich neutralisation sludge) raw materials are discussed as typical examples for Europe. In order to treat diverse and complex low-grade ores efficiently, the use of a new metallurgical systems toolbox is proposed, which is populated with existing and innovative unit operations: (i) mineral processing, (ii) metal extraction, (iii) metal recovery and (iv) matrix valorisation. Several promising novel techniques are under development for these four unit-operations. From an economical and environmental point of view, such processes must be fitted into new (circular) business models, whereby impacts and costs are divided over the entire value chain. Currently, low-grade secondary raw material processing is only economic and environmentally beneficial when the mineral residues can be valorised and landfill costs are avoided and/or incentives for waste processing can be taken into account.
