description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2023 BelgiumPublisher:SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications Moens, Pieter; Andriessen, Bavo; Sebrechts, Merlijn; Volckaert, Bruno; Van Hoecke, Sofie;Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations (AIOps) addresses the rising complexity of cloud computing and Internet of Things by assisting DevOps engineers to monitor and maintain applications. Machine Learning is an essential part of AIOps, enabling it to perform Anomaly Detection and Root Cause Analysis. These techniques are often executed in centralized components, however, which requires transferring vast amounts of data to a central location. This increase in network traffic causes strain on the network and results in higher latency. This paper leverages edge computing to address this issue by deploying ML models closer to the monitored services, reducing the network overhead. This paper investigates two architectural approaches: a sidecar architecture and a federated architecture, and highlights their advantages and shortcomings in different scenarios. Taking this into account, it proposes a framework that orchestrates the deployment and management of distributed edge ML models. Additionally, the paper introduces a Python library to assist data scientists during the development of AIOps techniques and concludes with a thorough evaluation of the resulting framework towards resource consumption and scalability. The results indicate up to 98.3% reduction in network usage depending on the configuration used while maintaining a minimal increase in resource usage at the edge.

In today’s world of digital transformation and global hyper-competition the need for organizations to manage and innovate their Business Processes in both incremental and disruptive ways is greater than ever, both for private and public organizations. The nascent concept of Business Process Ambidexterity (balancing process exploitation and exploration) has been receiving a growing interest in the academia, and my research aims to address three research gaps: (1) the conceptualization of Business Process Ambidexterity and guidance on its implementation; (2) its impact on business-IT alignment, and (3) the specific contingency factors of Business Process Ambidexterity in the public sector. I will address these gaps through a research plan, covering a large-scale survey, extreme case research, Delphi study and design science research. At this stage I have completed a Systematic Literature Review of Business Process Ambidexterity, and I am preparing the next steps of my research.

For some time now, robotics research has shifted its attention from robots that function within their own predefined space to robots that coexist with humans in the human's natural habitats. This evolution has not only driven interest in robot safety and compliance, it has also resulted in the subdomain of Social Robotics, which is concerned with natural interaction between robots and humans. In this studio, we will offer participants the chance to create their own animatronic creature using modular building blocks derived from Ono, our low-cost Do-It-Yourself social robot. In the first part, we will help participants to conceptualize a context and scenario for their social robot. Then, using craft materials (e.g. cardboard, glue, fabrics, foam, etc.) in combination with custom connectors and our animatronic modules, participants will build the physical embodiment of their creature. Finally, they are brought to life by connecting the modules to our electronics platform (Raspberry PI), which is then programmed using an easy to use library.

Nowadays deep neural networks are widely used to accurately classify input data. An interesting application area is the Internet of Things (IoT), where a massive amount of sensor data has to be classified. The processing power of the cloud is attractive, however the variable latency imposes a major drawback in situations where near real-time classification is required. In order to exploit the apparent trade-off between utilizing the stable but limited embedded computing power of IoT devices and the seemingly unlimited computing power of Cloud computing at the cost of higher and variable latency, we propose a Big-Little architecture for deep neural networks. A small neural network trained to a subset of prioritized output classes is running on the embedded device, while a more specific classification is calculated when required by a large neural network in the cloud. We show the applicability of this concept in the IoT domain by evaluating our approach for state of the art neural network classification problems on popular embedded devices such as the Raspberry Pi and Intel Edison.

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antenna topologies are promising candidates to adress the specific design challenges posed by the Internet of Things (IoT). In this contribution, we demonstrate their potential by discussing two designs on two different, application-specific, innovative substrate materials. First, a compact, ultra-wideband three-element array with very low mutual coupling is presented for integration into furniture. In the second design, the half-mode SIW technique is applied to obtain a miniaturized ultra-wideband design, enabling invisible integration into cork floor and wall tiles. The compactness, integrability, and stable, high performance of both designs in different operating conditions, make them ideal candidates for IoT applications.

Abstract An industrial project was developed to optimize the biodiesel production from crude palm oil. This process was developed for a one ton scale application on the palm oil production facility in equatorial Africa, to be used on the plantation to provide fuel for the fleet of the company. Because of the specific conditions (crude palm oil as starting material, application in technologically difficult conditions), it was essential for the developed procedure to be robust and simple, and to use minimum amounts of chemicals. The process was optimised on lab-scale in 2005 and 2006, scaled up in the following year, and is since then successfully applied as intended on the palm oil plantation. The produced biodiesel is used pure, without mixing with diesel fuel and without additives. After several years of continuous use, no negative effects were noticed on the engines. The process efficiency and durability are therefore confirmed.

<p>Agriculture remains the dominant source of food production and the livelihood foundation for majority of the rural poor in the sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Access to agricultural-water is, however, a limitation hindering crop productivity and end food insecurity in the drylands. In rain-deficit lowlands such as in the Raya-valley, flood-based farming is a means of improving crop production. Such spate irrigation systems grow in importance; though the effects of headwater hydrological deficit on flood-farming systems are lacking evidence. The present work investigates the impacts of headwater hydrological deficit on spate-irrigated agriculture in Tsge&#8217;a spate systems. Canal length and area of spate-irrigated agriculture along Guguf river for the 1980s and 2010s were tracked using Global Positioning System; while runoff trend analysed using linear regression. Annual volume of flash-flood shrunk by 7.36x10<sup>6</sup> m<sup>3</sup>. This is mainly due to changing climate and increasing water retention by the soil and humans at the escarpment. As a result, length of canals and area of spate-based farms downstream declined by 1.37 km (35%) and 1540 ha (57.5%), respectively, only in three decades time. This corresponds to an average withdrawal of -44 ha yr<sup>-1</sup>. A 1x10<sup>6</sup> m<sup>3</sup> decline in flash-flood caused a 366.4 ha decline in spate-based farms. Moreover, farm fields located next to the river course are less affected, as compared to farms on the tail of the scheme. If the current trend continues, there is likely a high risk that the remaining farms currently receiving flood may run out of spate systems. The involvement of arts and psychology elements in robotics research for children with cognitive impairment is still limited. However, the combination of robots, arts, psychology and education in the development of robots could significantly contribute to the improvement of social interaction skills among children with cognitive impairment. In this article, we would like to share our work on building and innovating the costume of LUCA's robot, which incorporating the positive psychological perspectives and arts values for children with cognitive impairment. Our goals are (1) to educate arts students in secondary arts school on the importance of social robot appearance for children with cognitive impairment, and (2) to select the best costume for future child-robot interaction study with children with cognitive impairments.

The popularity of digital comic books keeps rising, causing an increase in interest from traditional publishers. Digitizing existing comic books can require much work though, since older comic books were made when digital versions were not taken into account. Additions such as digital panel segmentation and semantic annotation, which increase the discoverability and functionality, were only introduced at a later point in time. To this end, we made ComSem: a tool to support publishers in this task by automating certain steps in the process and making others more accessible. In this paper we present our demo and how it can be used to easily detect comic book panels and annotate them with semantic metadata.

It has been shown in the past that robots help to bring theoretical concepts into practice, while at the same time increasing the motivation of the students. Despite these benefits, robots are hardly ever integrated in education programs and at the same time students feel that they have the competences nor the infrastructure to build a robot on their own. Therefore the workgroup electronics (WELEK) of Ghent University gives students the opportunity to build a robot by organizing workshops and competitions. Up until now, four competitions were organized in which over 200 students voluntarily participated. This paper describes our approach in the hope that it will inspire other educators to do the same thing. We also measured the effectiveness of our competitions by sending each of the participants a questionnaire. The results confirm that students acquire relevant technical competences by building a robot, learn to work as a team and are challenged to use their creativity.

Machine Learning is an essential part of AIOps, enabling it to perform Anomaly Detection and Root Cause Analysis. These techniques are often executed in centralized components, however, which requires transferring vast amounts of data to a central location. This increase in network traffic causes strain on the network and results in higher latency. This paper leverages edge computing to address this issue by deploying ML models closer to the monitored services, reducing the network overhead. This paper investigates two architectural approaches: a sidecar architecture and a federated architecture, and highlights their advantages and shortcomings in different scenarios. Taking this into account, it proposes a framework that orchestrates the deployment and management of distributed edge ML models. Additionally, the paper introduces a Python library to assist data scientists during the development of AIOps techniques and concludes with a thorough evaluation of the resulting framework towards resource consumption and scalability. The results indicate up to 98.3% reduction in network usage depending on the configuration used while maintaining a minimal increase in resource usage at the edge.

In today’s world of digital transformation and global hyper-competition the need for organizations to manage and innovate their Business Processes in both incremental and disruptive ways is greater than ever, both for private and public organizations. The nascent concept of Business Process Ambidexterity (balancing process exploitation and exploration) has been receiving a growing interest in the academia, and my research aims to address three research gaps: (1) the conceptualization of Business Process Ambidexterity and guidance on its implementation; (2) its impact on business-IT alignment, and (3) the specific contingency factors of Business Process Ambidexterity in the public sector. I will address these gaps through a research plan, covering a large-scale survey, extreme case research, Delphi study and design science research. At this stage I have completed a Systematic Literature Review of Business Process Ambidexterity, and I am preparing the next steps of my research.

For some time now, robotics research has shifted its attention from robots that function within their own predefined space to robots that coexist with humans in the human's natural habitats. This evolution has not only driven interest in robot safety and compliance, it has also resulted in the subdomain of Social Robotics, which is concerned with natural interaction between robots and humans. In this studio, we will offer participants the chance to create their own animatronic creature using modular building blocks derived from Ono, our low-cost Do-It-Yourself social robot. In the first part, we will help participants to conceptualize a context and scenario for their social robot. Then, using craft materials (e.g. cardboard, glue, fabrics, foam, etc.) in combination with custom connectors and our animatronic modules, participants will build the physical embodiment of their creature. Finally, they are brought to life by connecting the modules to our electronics platform (Raspberry PI), which is then programmed using an easy to use library.

Nowadays deep neural networks are widely used to accurately classify input data. An interesting application area is the Internet of Things (IoT), where a massive amount of sensor data has to be classified. The processing power of the cloud is attractive, however the variable latency imposes a major drawback in situations where near real-time classification is required. In order to exploit the apparent trade-off between utilizing the stable but limited embedded computing power of IoT devices and the seemingly unlimited computing power of Cloud computing at the cost of higher and variable latency, we propose a Big-Little architecture for deep neural networks. A small neural network trained to a subset of prioritized output classes is running on the embedded device, while a more specific classification is calculated when required by a large neural network in the cloud. We show the applicability of this concept in the IoT domain by evaluating our approach for state of the art neural network classification problems on popular embedded devices such as the Raspberry Pi and Intel Edison.

Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity-backed slot antenna topologies are promising candidates to adress the specific design challenges posed by the Internet of Things (IoT). In this contribution, we demonstrate their potential by discussing two designs on two different, application-specific, innovative substrate materials. First, a compact, ultra-wideband three-element array with very low mutual coupling is presented for integration into furniture. In the second design, the half-mode SIW technique is applied to obtain a miniaturized ultra-wideband design, enabling invisible integration into cork floor and wall tiles. The compactness, integrability, and stable, high performance of both designs in different operating conditions, make them ideal candidates for IoT applications.

Abstract An industrial project was developed to optimize the biodiesel production from crude palm oil. This process was developed for a one ton scale application on the palm oil production facility in equatorial Africa, to be used on the plantation to provide fuel for the fleet of the company. Because of the specific conditions (crude palm oil as starting material, application in technologically difficult conditions), it was essential for the developed procedure to be robust and simple, and to use minimum amounts of chemicals. The process was optimised on lab-scale in 2005 and 2006, scaled up in the following year, and is since then successfully applied as intended on the palm oil plantation. The produced biodiesel is used pure, without mixing with diesel fuel and without additives. After several years of continuous use, no negative effects were noticed on the engines. The process efficiency and durability are therefore confirmed.

<p>Agriculture remains the dominant source of food production and the livelihood foundation for majority of the rural poor in the sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Access to agricultural-water is, however, a limitation hindering crop productivity and end food insecurity in the drylands. In rain-deficit lowlands such as in the Raya-valley, flood-based farming is a means of improving crop production. Such spate irrigation systems grow in importance; though the effects of headwater hydrological deficit on flood-farming systems are lacking evidence. The present work investigates the impacts of headwater hydrological deficit on spate-irrigated agriculture in Tsge&#8217;a spate systems. Canal length and area of spate-irrigated agriculture along Guguf river for the 1980s and 2010s were tracked using Global Positioning System; while runoff trend analysed using linear regression. Annual volume of flash-flood shrunk by 7.36x10<sup>6</sup> m<sup>3</sup>. This is mainly due to changing climate and increasing water retention by the soil and humans at the escarpment. As a result, length of canals and area of spate-based farms downstream declined by 1.37 km (35%) and 1540 ha (57.5%), respectively, only in three decades time. This corresponds to an average withdrawal of -44 ha yr<sup>-1</sup>. A 1x10<sup>6</sup> m<sup>3</sup> decline in flash-flood caused a 366.4 ha decline in spate-based farms. Moreover, farm fields located next to the river course are less affected, as compared to farms on the tail of the scheme. If the current trend continues, there is likely a high risk that the remaining farms currently receiving flood may run out of spate systems. The involvement of arts and psychology elements in robotics research for children with cognitive impairment is still limited. However, the combination of robots, arts, psychology and education in the development of robots could significantly contribute to the improvement of social interaction skills among children with cognitive impairment. In this article, we would like to share our work on building and innovating the costume of LUCA's robot, which incorporating the positive psychological perspectives and arts values for children with cognitive impairment. Our goals are (1) to educate arts students in secondary arts school on the importance of social robot appearance for children with cognitive impairment, and (2) to select the best costume for future child-robot interaction study with children with cognitive impairments.

The popularity of digital comic books keeps rising, causing an increase in interest from traditional publishers. Digitizing existing comic books can require much work though, since older comic books were made when digital versions were not taken into account. Additions such as digital panel segmentation and semantic annotation, which increase the discoverability and functionality, were only introduced at a later point in time. To this end, we made ComSem: a tool to support publishers in this task by automating certain steps in the process and making others more accessible. In this paper we present our demo and how it can be used to easily detect comic book panels and annotate them with semantic metadata.

It has been shown in the past that robots help to bring theoretical concepts into practice, while at the same time increasing the motivation of the students. Despite these benefits, robots are hardly ever integrated in education programs and at the same time students feel that they have the competences nor the infrastructure to build a robot on their own. Therefore the workgroup electronics (WELEK) of Ghent University gives students the opportunity to build a robot by organizing workshops and competitions. Up until now, four competitions were organized in which over 200 students voluntarily participated. This paper describes our approach in the hope that it will inspire other educators to do the same thing. We also measured the effectiveness of our competitions by sending each of the participants a questionnaire. The results confirm that students acquire relevant technical competences by building a robot, learn to work as a team and are challenged to use their creativity.
