    This report provides information about activities and progress towards establishing DARIAH membership in six countries: the Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK, which took place between July and December 2019. Previous activities were described in detail in the D3.2 - Regularly Monitor Country-Specific Progress in Enabling New DARIAH Membership. During the project lifetime, the Czech Republic joined DARIAH ERIC; in other countries, collaboration with DARIAH has been greatly strengthened and significant progress regarding DARIAH membership has been achieved. The report also outlines the next steps in the accession processes, building on the results of the DESIR project.

    Despite extensive research having been conducted on the subject, the problem of three-dimensional information systems for historical cities is actually still unresolved. In addition, commercially available software seems to be increasingly aiming at a quick development of unspecific urban settings, rather than at a metrically and perceptively faithful representation of reality. In this scenario, the SIUR 3D software (Sistema Informativo URbano tridimensionale) is based on a management structure that links an interactive, photorealistic and metrically reliable model of a city with a qualitative database of the historical, archaeological and material scope of an architectural part. Such application uses the Unity 3D game engine for geometrical models management and is equipped for online data sharing.

    The DESIR project sets out to strengthen the sustainability of DARIAH and firmly establish it as a long-term leader and partner within arts and humanities communities. The project was designed to address six core infrastructural sustainability dimensions and one of these was dedicated to training and education, which is also one of the four pillars identified in the DARIAH Strategic Plan 2019-2026. In the framework of Work Package 7: Teaching, DESIR organised dedicated workshops in the six DARIAH accession countries (Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) to introduce them to the DARIAH infrastructure and related services, and to develop methodological research skills. The topic of each workshop was decided by accession countries representatives according to the training needs of the national communities of researchers in the (Digital) Humanities. Training topics varied greatly: on the one hand, some workshops had the objective to introduce participants to specific methodological research skills; on the other hand, a different approach was used, and some events focused on the infrastructural role of training and education.     This paper describes the achievements of the H2020 project INDIGO-DataCloud. The project has provided e-infrastructures with tools, applications and cloud framework enhancements to manage the demanding requirements of scientific communities, either locally or through enhanced interfaces. The middleware developed allows to federate hybrid resources, to easily write, port and run scientific applications to the cloud. In particular, we have extended existing PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions, allowing public and private e-infrastructures, including those provided by EGI, EUDAT, and Helix Nebula, to integrate their existing services and make them available through AAI services compliant with GEANT interfederation policies, thus guaranteeing transparency and trust in the provisioning of such services. Our middleware facilitates the execution of applications using containers on Cloud and Grid based infrastructures, as well as on HPC clusters. Our developments are freely downloadable as open source components, and are already being integrated into many scientific applications. 39 pages, 15 figures.Version accepted in Journal of Grid Computing

    To foster responsible research and innovation, research communities, institutions, and funders are shifting their practices and requirements towards Open Science. Open Science skills are becoming increasingly essential for researchers. Indeed general awareness of Open Science has grown among EU researchers, but the practical adoption can be further improved. Recognizing a gap between the needed and the provided training offer, the FOSTER project offers practical guidance and training to help researchers learn how to open up their research within a particular domain or research environment. Aiming for a sustainable approach, FOSTER focused on strengthening the Open Science training capacity by establishing and supporting a community of trainers. The creation of an Open Science training handbook was a first step towards bringing together trainers to share their experiences and to create an open and living knowledge resource. A subsequent series of train-the-trainer bootcamps helped trainers to find inspiration, improve their skills and to intensify exchange within a peer group. Four trainers, who attended one of the bootcamps, contributed a case study on their experiences and how they rolled out Open Science training within their own institutions. On its platform the project provides a range of online courses and resources to learn about key Open Science topics. FOSTER awards users gamification badges when completing courses in order to provide incentives and rewards, and to spur them on to even greater achievements in learning. The paper at hand describes FOSTER Plus’ training strategies, shares the lessons learnt and provides guidance on how to re-use the project’s materials and training approaches. Peer reviewed

    The EGI Federated Cloud is a standards-based open cloud system that offers a scalable and flexible e-infrastructure to the European research community, and extends the EGI computational offer beyond the traditional High Throughput Computing of the grid plat- form with new models like long-lived services and on demand computation. The EGI Cloud technology enables the federation of institutional clouds to run scientists workloads, simulations and services spanned across multiple administrative locations, allowing the users to access and exploit its resources as a unique system. The architecture of the federation was defined after a two year period of development based on a set of user stories describing operations on a cloud infrascturues and was officially launched in May 2014. Since then the EGI Federated Cloud operates as a federation of heterogeneous Infrastructure as a Service type clouds with every participating provider implementing the same set of interfaces towards users and system administrators. Enforcing cloud technology agnosticism and of supporting service mobility by means of open standards has also allowed for the inclusion of commercial cloud providers into an infrastructure previously supported only by academic institutions. This contributes to a wider goal of the funders to create economic and social impact from supported research activities. This paper details the state of the art, the design and development processes, and the organisational effort that have lead to the creation and deployment of the EGI Cloud Platform.     With the increasingly rapid growth of data in life sciences we are witnessing a major transition in the way research is conducted, from hypothesis-driven studies to data-driven simulations of whole systems. Such approaches necessitate the use of large-scale computational resources and e-infrastructures, such as the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). EGI, one of key the enablers of the digital European Research Area, is a federation of resource providers set up to deliver sustainable, integrated and secure computing services to European researchers and their international partners. Here we aim to provide the state of the art of Grid/Cloud computing in EU research as viewed from within the field of life sciences, focusing on key infrastructures and projects within the life sciences community. Rather than focusing purely on the technical aspects underlying the currently provided solutions, we outline the design aspects and key characteristics that can be identified across major research approaches. Overall, we aim to provide significant insights into the road ahead by establishing ever-strengthening connections between EGI as a whole and the life sciences community.     El discurso en las obras de F. M. Dostoievski lleva más de 150 años atrayendo la atención de numerosos especialistas, cada vez procedentes de ámbitos más dispares. Con la consolidación de las Humanidades digitales (HD) como espacio necesariamente interdisciplinar se han conseguido interesantes avances y no menos sugestivas propuestas que parecen arrojar luz sobre la interpretación de ciertas cuestiones narratológicas de las obras de este autor. En el presente estudio abordaremos el estado actual de la imbricación de las HD y los estudios literarios y mostraremos el potencial del análisis cuantitativo, las técnicas de visualización y el análisis de redes para el estudio de textos literarios y, en particular, de la obra literaria de Dostoievski. El discurs en les obres de F. M. Dostoievski porta més de 150 anys atraient l’atenció de nombrosos especialistes, cada vegada procedents d’àmbits més dispars. Amb la consolidació de les Humanitats digitals (HD) com a espai necessàriament interdisciplinari s’han aconseguit interessants avanços i no menys suggestives propostes que semblen llançar llum sobre la interpretació d’unes certes qüestions narratològiques de les obres d’aquest autor. En el present estudi abordarem l’estat actual de la imbricació de les HD i els Estudis literaris i mostrarem el potencial de l’anàlisi quantitativa, les tècniques de visualització i l’anàlisi de xarxes per a l’estudi de textos literaris i, en particular, de l’obra literària de Dostoievski. Discourse in Dostoevsky’s works has drawn the attention of numerous specialists in increasingly diverse fields for more than 150 years. As Digital Humanities (DH) become consolidated as an interdisciplinary space of research, interesting advances and proposals have been made that seem to shed new light on the interpretation of certain narratological questions in the works of this author. This contribution studies the current state of intersection of DH with Literary Studies and shows the potential of quantitative analysis, data visualization techniques and network analysis as applied to the study of literary texts and, particularly, the literary works Dostoevsky.

Our middleware facilitates the execution of applications using containers on Cloud and Grid based infrastructures, as well as on HPC clusters. Our developments are freely downloadable as open source components, and are already being integrated into many scientific applications.     With the increasingly rapid growth of data in life sciences we are witnessing a major transition in the way research is conducted, from hypothesis-driven studies to data-driven simulations of whole systems. Such approaches necessitate the use of large-scale computational resources and e-infrastructures, such as the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI). EGI, one of key the enablers of the digital European Research Area, is a federation of resource providers set up to deliver sustainable, integrated and secure computing services to European researchers and their international partners. Here we aim to provide the state of the art of Grid/Cloud computing in EU research as viewed from within the field of life sciences, focusing on key infrastructures and projects within the life sciences community. Rather than focusing purely on the technical aspects underlying the currently provided solutions, we outline the design aspects and key characteristics that can be identified across major research approaches. Overall, we aim to provide significant insights into the road ahead by establishing ever-strengthening connections between EGI as a whole and the life sciences community.     El discurso en las obras de F. M. Dostoievski lleva más de 150 años atrayendo la atención de numerosos especialistas, cada vez procedentes de ámbitos más dispares. Con la consolidación de las Humanidades digitales (HD) como espacio necesariamente interdisciplinar se han conseguido interesantes avances y no menos sugestivas propuestas que parecen arrojar luz sobre la interpretación de ciertas cuestiones narratológicas de las obras de este autor. En el presente estudio abordaremos el estado actual de la imbricación de las HD y los estudios literarios y mostraremos el potencial del análisis cuantitativo, las técnicas de visualización y el análisis de redes para el estudio de textos literarios y, en particular, de la obra literaria de Dostoievski. El discurs en les obres de F. M. Dostoievski porta més de 150 anys atraient l’atenció de nombrosos especialistes, cada vegada procedents d’àmbits més dispars. Amb la consolidació de les Humanitats digitals (HD) com a espai necessàriament interdisciplinari s’han aconseguit interessants avanços i no menys suggestives propostes que semblen llançar llum sobre la interpretació d’unes certes qüestions narratològiques de les obres d’aquest autor. En el present estudi abordarem l’estat actual de la imbricació de les HD i els Estudis literaris i mostrarem el potencial de l’anàlisi quantitativa, les tècniques de visualització i l’anàlisi de xarxes per a l’estudi de textos literaris i, en particular, de l’obra literària de Dostoievski. Discourse in Dostoevsky’s works has drawn the attention of numerous specialists in increasingly diverse fields for more than 150 years. As Digital Humanities (DH) become consolidated as an interdisciplinary space of research, interesting advances and proposals have been made that seem to shed new light on the interpretation of certain narratological questions in the works of this author. This contribution studies the current state of intersection of DH with Literary Studies and shows the potential of quantitative analysis, data visualization techniques and network analysis as applied to the study of literary texts and, particularly, the literary works Dostoevsky.
