We present our method and interim results of the “Mining Goodreads” project, aimed at developing a computational approach to measure reading absorption in user-generated book reviews in English. A team of eight people (three supervisors and five annotators) have joined skills from the fields of empirical literary studies, natural language processing, and digital humanities, with the goal of producing a gold-standard annotated dataset and strengthening the theoretical framework of reading absorption. Annotation of more than 800 texts showed the difficulties in finding an agreement in the tagging of sentences. However, through more than one year of work in strict collaboration, the team reached some substantial improvements: inter-annotator agreement increased through seven annotation rounds, while machine learning approaches were applied on the annotated corpus, producing promising results.

Among the goals of the ARIADNE project (a digital infrastructure for archaeological documentation), two interrelated objectives are the design of new services (or the integration of existing ones) and the implementation of an intense training & hands-on program. Especially in the case of visual media (which are evolving at an impressing pace) services should be paired by user consultation and training, since a pre-requisite of any service activity is to consolidate knowledge on the potential of new media and the impact those could have in the selected discipline. The latter is the main objective of the TNA training program and of other user consultation events that have been organized in the first 18 months of the ARIADNE project. This short contribution presents the results of this activity and our plans for the design of new services.

The DESIR project sets out to strengthen the sustainability of DARIAH and firmly establish it as a long-term leader and partner within arts and humanities communities. The project was designed to address six core infrastructural sustainability dimensions and one of these was dedicated to training and education, which is also one of the four pillars identified in the DARIAH Strategic Plan 2019-2026. In the framework of Work Package 7: Teaching, DESIR organised dedicated workshops in the six DARIAH accession countries (Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) to introduce them to the DARIAH infrastructure and related services, and to develop methodological research skills. The topic of each workshop was decided by accession countries representatives according to the training needs of the national communities of researchers in the (Digital) Humanities. Training topics varied greatly: on the one hand, some workshops had the objective to introduce participants to specific methodological research skills; on the other hand, a different approach was used, and some events focused on the infrastructural role of training and education. If citation is a common practice for publications, it is relatively new for data especially in SSH. This paper will present the work carried out during the SSHOC project about data citation in general and more precisely how to make them actionable. International audience

This deliverable describes the activities carried out during the three editions of the Summer School "Design of Archaeological Datasets", hosted by the partner CNR - ISTI (NeMIS Lab) and reports the results achieved, relying on the feedback given by the students at the end of each edition of the courses. The feedback questionnaires completed by the attendees are reported in appendix. In the EC Surveys all the participants expressed an overall appreciation of the course between "Good" and "Very good". Students globally expressed satisfaction for the scientific contents of the school, appreciating the outlines of the Semantic Web architecture, metadata structure and database design. Most of them declared the course provided a broader and clearer picture of the Information Technology aspects and tools available to design the data collected in archaeological research.

The paper introduces into a new Science Gateway, developed in the framework of the European Horizon 2020 project EGI Engage - DARIAH Competence Centre, which started in March 2015 co-funded by the European Union, with the participation of about 70 (research) units in over 30 countries. In this paper the authors focus on trans-disciplinary collaboration in the framework of explorative lexicography in cultural context. On the one hand, they give a short overview of the architecture of the Science Gateway, used techniques, and specific applications and services developed during the DARIAH Competence Centre. On the other they mainly focus on possible added value and changes concerning work flow for Lexicographers and researchers on Lexical resources. This is exemplified on the European network of COST action IS 1305 “European Network of electronic lexicography (ENeL)”.

This paper describes the activities carried out under the ARIADNE project to demonstrate the item-level integration process of archaeological archives through the use of semantic technologies. To this end, some ancient coin records, coming from the archives of important European archaeological institutions, were selected. The subset thus created, has been carefully analysed by means of specific tools to identify similar concepts and common metadata elements that could serve as the basis for integration. CIDOC CRM was chosen as the conceptual model for encoding the identified entities, while some important numismatic vocabularies have been employed to improve standardisation. The implementation phase has benefited from the use of advanced tools for mapping and conversion of the original information in a semantic form (RDF), the creation of a triple store to place the newly integrated data and the necessary interfaces for accessing and querying them.

One of the emerging needs of the archaeological community is represented by the importance of availing of systems that allow to tackle new research questions, by querying diverse available resources. Usually, archaeological digital data is stored in non-standardised individual databases with a limited possibility of integration and a high level of fragmentation. The EU-funded project ARIADNE, has developed an e-infrastructure which enables the integration of archaeological datasets from various different institutions, integrating resource discovery metadata using controlled vocabularies, thesauri, gazetteers and ontology (CIDOC CRM). This paper presents the ARIADNE infrastructure, describing the activities undertaken by the project to achieve interoperability of archaeological resources at the dataset and item level. Moreover, the architecture of the ARIADNE Infrastructure and the Portal, with the different ways to search and access the resources are described.

The SSHOC Multilingual Terminologies consist of a set of multilingual metadata concepts and an automatically extracted multilingual Data Stewardship terminology. They have been created in the context of the SSHOC project as case studies, during an activity of investigation on how Language Technologies can help in promoting and facilitating multilingualism in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The SSHOC Multilingual terminologies has been created to evaluate performances of state-of-the-art tools and to derive a set of recommendations as to how best apply them. The talk will present the main recommendations derived from the investigation and the workflow and tools adopted to publish the Terminologies as SKOS resources.
