description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2018 GermanyPublisher:Walter de Gruyter GmbH Authors: Berg, Marc van den;Berg, Marc van den;Abstract After a short introduction to the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the article deals with the question, why The National Library of The Netherlands (KB) needed to transform. Major challenges are discussed: e.g. new roles for KB in the public library domain and the more general transformation towards a digital business. Next, the article describes strategy: how to transform, following both internal and external drivers? At the end a short overview of current status and results are given.

The digitization of universities is a complex and inconsistent process. In this paper a first impression is given what does digitization of universities mean and how much progress did this process make. In an outline without dealing with any details it is tried to look at the university and the process of digitizing it as a whole. The dynamics and potentials of this development will be shown. In a second step the place of university libraries in those digitized universities and the necessary changes will be assessed.

The sustainability of a digital research infrastructure relies not only on technology, but first and foremost on the trust of its users. In turn, this trust results in particular from the tangible added value that the services provided by the research infrastructure offer its users. In order to be able to offer this added value on an ongoing basis, the services of a virtual research infrastructure must not only be continuously developed, but it is also necessary that the users are supported in all questions regarding the use of the services. This article outlines a model for integrating continuous development and user-friendly infrastructure support services. Customer orientation has become increasingly important in library management literature in recent years, the contribution to the overall corporate strategy has played a rather subordinate role. However, a visible and verifiable contribution of the library shapes the perception by the overall management. The paper addresses the different directions of communication that modern library management has to apply within the organisation. In an empirical study, strategy papers of European libraries are examined with regard to their connection to the sponsoring organisation. The study is based on the basic assumption that if there is close integration in the sense of a clear contribution to the overall strategy of the sponsoring organisation, the perception and integration of the library in the organisational context should be more clearly and firmly anchored. Subsequently, three models for strategy development are presented, which are used in public libraries and analysed with respect to their relation with the funder. It is not only that embedded or liaison librarians are needed to firmly anchor the library in the centre of the institution. It is an embedded library as a whole that has to prove relevance and importance to the future of the institution, e.g.city, university or research institution.
