The core of the UPSKILLS project is constituted by the creation of learning content dedicated to topics deemed to be of particular importance for twenty-first century students of languages and linguistics. This learning content should help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed for the contemporary job market, which offers numerous new opportunities both within and beyond traditional language-oriented professions, but which also requires skills not typically included, or at least insufficiently present in university curricula. However, UPSKILLS is not alone in wishing to bring the knowledge and skills of language and linguistics students more up-to-date with the job market, and some resources relevant for the topics it aims to address have already been created in other projects, within university curricula or in other related contexts. In order to avoid duplicating materials that have already been made available by others, the first step in the creation of UPSKILLS learning content is the present overview of existing materials.

This article examines both the choices made, as well as the data gathered during the construction of the programme for the DHN2018 conference. Through this, we shed light on 1) the general directions of DH in the Nordic countries, 2) which DH traditions are particularly well represented here and 3) the pain points and surprising interactions identified during the programme-curation process. We base our recommendations to the organisers of future conferences on this analysis. Peer reviewed

In the light of new digital production and dissemination practices, the scholarly publishing system has seen significant and also disruptive changes, especially in STM (science, technology and medicine) and with regard to the predominant format “journal article.” The digital transformation also holds true for those disciplines that continue to rely on the scholarly monograph as a publication format and means for reputation building, namely the Humanities and the Social Sciences with a qualitative approach (HSS). In our paper we analyse the reasons why the monograph has not yet reached its full potential in the digital paradigm, especially in the uptake of Open Access and innovative publishing options. We highlight some of the principal underlying factors for this, and suggest how especially practices, now more widespread in HSS but arising from the Digital Humanities, could play a role in moving forward the rich digitality of the scholarly monograph. peerReviewed

If the digital humanities are to thrive they must be allowed to remain culturally dissonant. The ways in which DH is practiced will differ across national contexts, with each region having peculiarities representative of the culture-specific conditions which shaped the field as it first emerged and later developed. While scholars tend to belong and contribute to international communities of praxis, doing DH in one place might look very different to doing DH somewhere else. Disciplinary cultures are often transnational, but where scholars are trained and where they work will usually impact upon their own, individualised perspective of that discipline. This paper traces the history of the digital humanities in Ireland, providing on account of DH as it exists in a specifically Irish context. It mimics the Busa narrative, uncovering equivalent figures from Irish DH’s origin story, while detailing some of the key initiatives and institutions to have contributed to the national development of the discipline. As a small island with a close-knit academic community, culturally torn between US, British and European influences, Ireland represents an opportunity to examine DH as a national project, and how such a project might be contrasted with international norms, what it achieved, and where it has failed. Résumé Si les humanités numériques doivent prospérer, il faudra leur permettre de rester culturellement dissonantes. Les façons dont l’on pratique les HN varieront et dépendront de contextes nationaux, où chaque région a des particularités qui représentent leurs propres situations culturelles qui ont façonné le domaine à son début et ultérieurement. Tandis que les chercheurs ont tendance à contribuer et à faire partie de communautés internationales de praxis, les HN faites dans un endroit peuvent être très différentes par rapport à celles trouvées ailleurs. Les cultures disciplinaires sont souvent transnationales, mais le lieu où les chercheurs ont été formés et où ils travaillent affectent normalement leur propre perspective individualisée de la discipline en question. Cet article suit l’histoire des humanités numériques en Irlande, en fournissant un récit des HN comme elles existent dans un contexte spécifiquement irlandais. Cela imite la narrative Busa, en dévoilant des figures équivalentes de l’origine des HN en Irlande et en détaillant des initiatives et institutions clés qui ont contribué au développement national du domaine. The variety of specialized tools designed to facilitate analysis of audio-visual (AV) media are useful not only to media scholars and oral historians but to other researchers as well. Both Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) packages and dedicated systems created for specific disciplines, such as linguistics, can be used for this purpose. Software proliferation challenges researchers to make informed choices about which package will be most useful for their project. This paper aims to present an information science perspective of the scholarly use of tools in qualitative research of audio-visual sources. It provides a baseline of affordances based on functionalities with the goal of making the types of research tasks that they support more explicit (e.g., transcribing, segmenting, coding, linking, and commenting on data). We look closely at how these functionalities relate to each other, and at how system design influences research tasks.

Digital humanities (DH) as a research field has been developing rapidly in Finland during the past few years, mainly due to increased funding and profiling activities. Although these infrastructural developments have created (smaller and larger) centres, hubs and clusters related directly or indirectly to digital humanities, the future of Finnish research in this area depends on how the various scholarly and memory organisations, as well as individual scholars, succeed in joining forces. The overall argument in this paper is that digital humanities needs to establish its identity and to create a new space among research cultures with varying characteristics tackling a multitude of problems, and that this can only be achieved through national collaboration and the joint exploitation of the strengths of existing DH hubs. The article sets out a roadmap to this end, providing a detailed discussion of various developments in digital humanities, and analysing different possibilities in the international context. It is based on a survey conducted in 2016 among Finnish scholars in the fields of humanities and the social sciences, an analysis of existing infrastructures, and interviews with DH scholars involved with international top-level DH centres. The focus in the latter part of the article is on these interviews, and on the lessons learned abroad from which the Finnish DH community could benefit. We conclude with a strong call for collaboration to facilitate the further development of the DH field in Finland in response to international competition.

Exposure to LTE 2600 MHz microwaves is increasing very fast as new technologies and become accessible worldwide, and the smartphones being the main source of these waves. The aim of this study is to assess the thermal effect of 4G signals on rats. Forty adult Albino rats were used throughout the study, assigned as control and exposed groups, equally. Rats were kept in Plexiglas cages with intermittent exposure to LTE mobile-phone like signals at an average of 2h/day for up to 30 continuous days with SAR value of 0.982 W/kg. Infrared images were snapped immediately after the end of the exposure time, then one hour, two hours, and four hours later at a rate one collection/week during the study. IR images were analyzed by FLIR Tools software. The results exhibited variation in reflected skin temperatures in the exposed group compared to control images. Furthermore, the analysis of collected data revealed significant variations over the course of the study compared to the first week. The rise in skin temperature observed in response to exposure in the first week, which decreased gradually increased exposure and this drop in reflected skin temperature was significantly related to amount of exposure. The study concludes that the LTE 2600 MHz exposure under controlled laboratory conditions has a thermal effect on the rats.
