The SSHOC Multilingual Terminologies consist of a set of multilingual metadata concepts and an automatically extracted multilingual Data Stewardship terminology. They have been created in the context of the SSHOC project as case studies, during an activity of investigation on how Language Technologies can help in promoting and facilitating multilingualism in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The SSHOC Multilingual terminologies has been created to evaluate performances of state-of-the-art tools and to derive a set of recommendations as to how best apply them. The talk will present the main recommendations derived from the investigation and the workflow and tools adopted to publish the Terminologies as SKOS resources.

If citation is a common practice for publications, it is relatively new for data especially in SSH. This paper will present the work carried out during the SSHOC project about data citation in general and more precisely how to make them actionable. International audience

Narrative is emerging as a notion that may enable overcoming the limitations of the discovery functionality (only ranked lists of objects) offered by information systems to their users. We present preliminary results on modelling narratives by means of formal ontology, by introducing a conceptualization of narratives and a mathematical expression of it. Our conceptualization tries to capture fundamental notions of narratives as defined in narratology, such as fabula, narration and plot. A validation of the conceptualization and of its mathematical specification is ongoing, based on the Semantic Web standards and on the CIDOC CRM ISO standard ontology.

This deliverable describes the activities carried out during the three editions of the Summer School "Design of Archaeological Datasets", hosted by the partner CNR - ISTI (NeMIS Lab) and reports the results achieved, relying on the feedback given by the students at the end of each edition of the courses. The feedback questionnaires completed by the attendees are reported in appendix. In the EC Surveys all the participants expressed an overall appreciation of the course between "Good" and "Very good". Students globally expressed satisfaction for the scientific contents of the school, appreciating the outlines of the Semantic Web architecture, metadata structure and database design. Most of them declared the course provided a broader and clearer picture of the Information Technology aspects and tools available to design the data collected in archaeological research.

Online publishing of almost every type of 3D data has become a quasi-standard routine. Nevertheless, the integration in a web page of a single 3D model, or of a predefined restricted set of models, raises different issues compared to an efficient and effective integration of thousands of them in an online repository. In this case it is mandatory to have an automatized pipeline to prepare and homogenize the dataset. The pipeline should be able to automatically wrap 3D data in all conditions, and display every single model with the best scene setup without any (or with a minimal) interaction by the database maintainers. This paper, retracing the steps of a recent real application case, aims at showing all the faced issues (and the adopted solutions) to publish a large and heterogeneous three-dimensional dataset in a web specialized repository. We want to introduce a valid and reusable strategy, starting from the description of the pipeline adopted for data pre-processing and moving to the choices made in the 3D viewer implementation. The paper concludes with a discussion on the actual state of the integration of 3D data with the other multimedia informative layers.

This study aims to improve the knowledge of polychrome Roman sarcophagi by showing the first observations about the colour palette detected and the painting techniques by combining archaeological research with scientific results. These results are the base to understand the ancient colour and to improve the virtual reconstruction through the use of 3D Computer Graphic.

Among the goals of the ARIADNE project (a digital infrastructure for archaeological documentation), two interrelated objectives are the design of new services (or the integration of existing ones) and the implementation of an intense training & hands-on program. Especially in the case of visual media (which are evolving at an impressing pace) services should be paired by user consultation and training, since a pre-requisite of any service activity is to consolidate knowledge on the potential of new media and the impact those could have in the selected discipline. The latter is the main objective of the TNA training program and of other user consultation events that have been organized in the first 18 months of the ARIADNE project. This short contribution presents the results of this activity and our plans for the design of new services.

We propose a technique to decompose a 3D digital shape into a set of interlocking pieces that are easy to be manufactured and assembled. The pieces are designed so that they can be represented as a simple height field and, therefore, they can be manufactured by common 3D printers without the usage of supporting material. The removal of the supporting material is often a burdensome task and may eventually damage the surface of the printed object. Our approach makes the final reproduction cheaper, accurate and suitable for the reproduction of tangible cultural heritages. Moreover, since the proposed technique decomposes the artwork in pieces, it also overcomes the working space limits of common printers. The decomposition of the input (high-resolution) triangular mesh is driven by a coarse polygonal base mesh (representing the target subdivision in pieces); the height fields defining each piece are generated by sampling distances along the normal of each face composing the base mesh. A innovative interlocking mechanism allows adjacent pieces to plug each other to compose the final shape. This interlocking mechanism is designed to preserve the height field property of the pieces and to provide a sufficient degree of grip to ensure the assembled structure shape to be compact and stable. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach and show its limitations with some practical reproduction examples.

Digital Fabrication technologies exploit a variety of basic technologies to create tangible reproductions of 3D digital models. Even though current 3D printing pipelines still suffer of several restrictions, the reproduction accuracy has gradually reached an excellent level. Thanks to this advancement, the interests of manufacturing industry with respect to 3D printing techniques has significantly grown during the last decade. However, digital fabrication techniques have been demonstrated to be effective also in other contexts, such as medical applications and Cultural Heritage (CH). The goal of this survey paper is to introduce briefly the different fabrication technologies, to discuss some successful utilization of 3D printing in the CH domain and, finally, to review the work done so far to extend fabrication technology capabilities to cope with the specific issues that characterize the usage of digital fabrication in the CH domain.

Visual data are nowadays a basic component of the massive data gathered in archaeology. With the term visual data we mean any visual representation that could be associated to an artwork, architecture or site, to describe its shape in terms of visual and geometric elements. Therefore, different representations are included: 2D images (standard images, panoramic images, Reflection Transformation Images - RTI), 2D graphical representations such as maps or drawings (usually represented by standard digital image files), 3D models (either sampled or reconstructed with modelling systems) or finally videos (grabbed from reality or computer animations). In the framework of the ARIADNE project, we are focusing on the services that an infrastructure for archaeological documentation should provide for managing these media. Our first goal is to present to users the capabilities of current technology (both commercial tools and resources produced in few recent EU projects) and to understand how to map the real needs of the user community on existing technologies and potential services for production, sharing and visualization. Training is an important component of an infrastructure project, due to the many media available and the complexity of both mastering data creation/presentation and of understanding which media fits better the specific documentation or visual analysis needs. Our purpose will be to help our community in building a clear view of the affordances of particular genres of representations, clarifying their documentation potential and the possible limitations wrt. storing, discovery, accessing, connecting with other data, and rendering. Designing an infrastructure requires also focusing on configuration and/or development (e.g. customization to user needs of open source solutions and of academic prototypes developed by EU projects). Obviously, visual data cannot be treated isolated from the other data. Integration should be designed to allow advanced visual data creation and visualization to inter-operate with standard databases and repositories.
