Le Moigne;AbstractIn the ocean, downward flux of particles produced in sunlit surface waters is the major component of the biological carbon pump, which sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide and fuels deep-sea ecosystems. The efficiency of downward carbon transfer is expected to be particularly high in tropical upwelling systems where hypoxia occurring beneath the productive surface waters is thought to hamper particle consumption. However, observations of both particle feeders and carbon export in low-oxygen waters are scarce. Here, we provide evidence that hypoxia-tolerant zooplankton feed on sinking particles in the extensive Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Peru. Using several arrays of drifting sediment traps and in situ imaging, we show geochemical and morphological transformations of sinking particles and substantial control of carbon export by zooplankton. Our findings challenge the assumption of a consistently efficient biological carbon pump in OMZs and further demonstrate the need to consider mesopelagic organisms when studying oceanic carbon sequestration.

This study explores the potential of using Electric Vehicles (EVs) batteries for renewable energy storage through a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system. We argue that V2G requires nuanced coordination for using EVs as mobility and storage resources facilitated by an aggregator acting as an intermediary. Emphasizing the importance of information in this coordination, we develop a theoretical framework addressing the value of information for V2G aggregators. We implement the theoretical framework in an analysis focusing on the often-overlooked aspect of the business models that might enable the information flow between an aggregator and EV owners. A multi-agent simulation in Tenerife 2040 evaluates four scenarios, each assuming that EVs are coordinated by different types of mobility apps, i.e., a decision support system that helps EV owners reserve charging stations or route navigation. The results reveal that EV owners' charging behavior information is the most important for a V2G aggregator, yet when mobility information is also considered, the value of V2G increases by a factor of six. This insight informs the development of future business models for sustainable and efficient decarbonized electric systems.

To evaluate the quality of OSM data, similarities between OSM features and their homologous features represented in a reference database are relevant metrics. However, reference databases do not exist everywhere or are not freely available. Thus, having data quality assessment methods that rely only on intrinsic indicators (i.e. based on data itself without considering external information) would be useful in these cases. This article specifically uses the radial distance as a target quality metric to measure the quality of shapes. Its aim is to build a random-forest based classification method that reconstructs whether this distance is higher or lower than a specified threshold, using only intrinsic indicators as inputs. The classification algorithm is evaluated on a first dataset by computing the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve and using the AUC (Area Under Curve) as an evaluation metric. The transferability of the resulting algorithm is then evaluated by measuring its performance on a second, distinct dataset. The experiments show that the algorithm performs reasonably well on both the initial and the second dataset, and that intrinsic indicators give relevant information to infer comparison-based shape quality (i.e. the radial distance).

The present study introduces an active-passive system (APS) with phase change material (PCM) integrated into the substructure of the internal walls and ceiling for cooling. To ensure sufficient cooling effect of the system during the daytime cycle, the system must solidify completely during the nighttime cycle and operation costs comparable to the ones of conventional cooling systems. An air gap was formed between the primary wall and ceiling and the PCM substructure and ventilated with the cool outdoor air during the nighttime cycle. A parametric study was performed using ANSYS Fluent followed by the energy performance and operation cost analysis. Different inlet air temperature scenarios (15–20 °C) were tested (suitable PCM thermal characteristics). The required solidification-time of PCM was determined. The model is validated against the experimental tests. The results show that with the current configuration, the PCM plates can be sufficiently solidified at supply air temperatures of 17 °C and below. If the system is ventilated with inlet air temperatures above 17 °C, additional cooling options must be considered. The study also determines the energy performance of the system under the chosen conditions and compares its feasibility to the conventional cooling systems (energy efficiency class A+++ and G air-conditioning device).

Subduction redistributes elements between Earth's principal geochemical reservoirs, modifying the chemical composition of Earth's mantle, crust, atmosphere, and hydrosphere, and consequently having an impact on the evolution of life itself. Subduction of surface material that has been geochemically modified by low-temperature processes leads to mineralogical and chemical heterogeneities in mantle reservoirs over time and is recorded in modern ocean island basalts. One of the principal geochemical end members of the heterogeneous deep mantle, the enriched mantle 1 (EM-1) source of Pitcairn Island, has been attributed to the contribution of crustal material with vastly different chemical compositions and ages. The Mo isotope composition of lavas from Pitcairn Island constrains the nature of this recycled crustal component. Pitcairn lavas have elevated δMo relative to the depleted mantle. The high δMo is associated with high time-integrated Th/U and Rb/Sr, and low time-integrated Sm/Nd and U/Pb. These characteristics can be attributed to the recycling of nearly pristine pelagic sediments that were deposited in a Proterozoic anoxic deep-ocean into the sources of the Pitcairn Island lavas. The isotope composition of these lavas is similar to that of EM-1 hotspots from the South Atlantic, indicating the addition of reduced sediments in both of Earth's large low shear wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs). Consistent data from both locations imply that the subduction cycling of sedimentary redox-sensitive elements such as Mo, S, Se, and U into arc magmas was in these cases inefficient in the Precambrian and the chemical and isotopic signature of reduced sediments is preserved in the source of ocean island basalts bearing the EM-1 characteristics. International audience; Mercury (Hg) fulminate was used as a primary fuse in World War (WW) munitions, and may consequently be a Hg source for impacted environments. Mercury is a conspicuous and persistent pollutant, with methylmercury (MeHg) acting as a notorious neurotoxin. Considerable amounts of munitions were intentionally dumped in the North Sea and Baltic Sea following the First and Second WWs. After more than 70 years on the seafloor many munitions have corroded and likely release explosive compounds, including Hg fulminate. The Germany coastal city of Kiel was a manufacturing centre for submarines, and accordingly a prominent target for bombing and post-war disarmament. We collected water and sediment samples around Kiel Bay to assess regional levels and quantify any Hg contamination. The munition dump site Kolberger Heide (KH) and a former anti-aircraft training center Dänisch-Nienhof are situated in Kiel Bay, and were targeted for sampling. Sediment Hg concentrations around KH were notably elevated. Average Hg concentrations in KH sediments were 125 ± 76 ng/g, compared to 14 ± 18 ng/g at background (control) sites. In contrast, dissolved Hg in the water column exhibited no site variations, all ranging between 0.8 and 2.1 pM. Methylmercury in sediments and waters did not have enhanced concentrations amongst sites (400 pmol m−2 d−1 MeHg) at one KH location, however remaining cores had low to no Hg and MeHg output (<0–27 pmol m−2 d−1 MeHg). Thus, sediments in Kiel Bay proximate to WW munitions could harbor and form a source of Hg, however water column mixing and removal processes attenuate any discharge from the seafloor to overlying waters.

Axhausen;With the introduction of automated vehicles, new operating regimes for public transport services will become possible. A station-based Automated Transit on Demand service could be an attractive alternative to the current modes of transportation. In this paper, the impact of this kind of service on the modal share for the city of Zurich, Switzerland, and its surrounding area is modeled using an agent-based approach. Different scenarios regarding the operating area, pricing scheme, and a cordon charge are tested on their potential to make use of the benefits of the new service while preventing an overflow of automated vehicles in the urban core. Results show that if left unconstrained the proposed service can substantially impact the demand for public transport. A pricing scheme that bases the pricing of the new service relative to the accessibility of the current public transport service is a promising solution to increase the accessibility of the rural areas while maintaining a high modal share for public transport in the city center. Finally, using an optimization algorithm we show that the total car-fleet and public parking space can be reduced at the cost of a slight increase in vehicle kilometers traveled. Moreover, we find that the cost coverage of the proposed transit service is potentially much higher in comparison to current public transport services. Journal of Urban Mobility, 3 ISSN:2667-0917

Le Moigne;AbstractIn the ocean, downward flux of particles produced in sunlit surface waters is the major component of the biological carbon pump, which sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide and fuels deep-sea ecosystems. The efficiency of downward carbon transfer is expected to be particularly high in tropical upwelling systems where hypoxia occurring beneath the productive surface waters is thought to hamper particle consumption. However, observations of both particle feeders and carbon export in low-oxygen waters are scarce. Here, we provide evidence that hypoxia-tolerant zooplankton feed on sinking particles in the extensive Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Peru. Using several arrays of drifting sediment traps and in situ imaging, we show geochemical and morphological transformations of sinking particles and substantial control of carbon export by zooplankton. Our findings challenge the assumption of a consistently efficient biological carbon pump in OMZs and further demonstrate the need to consider mesopelagic organisms when studying oceanic carbon sequestration.

This study explores the potential of using Electric Vehicles (EVs) batteries for renewable energy storage through a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system. We argue that V2G requires nuanced coordination for using EVs as mobility and storage resources facilitated by an aggregator acting as an intermediary. Emphasizing the importance of information in this coordination, we develop a theoretical framework addressing the value of information for V2G aggregators. We implement the theoretical framework in an analysis focusing on the often-overlooked aspect of the business models that might enable the information flow between an aggregator and EV owners. A multi-agent simulation in Tenerife 2040 evaluates four scenarios, each assuming that EVs are coordinated by different types of mobility apps, i.e., a decision support system that helps EV owners reserve charging stations or route navigation. The results reveal that EV owners' charging behavior information is the most important for a V2G aggregator, yet when mobility information is also considered, the value of V2G increases by a factor of six. This insight informs the development of future business models for sustainable and efficient decarbonized electric systems.

To evaluate the quality of OSM data, similarities between OSM features and their homologous features represented in a reference database are relevant metrics. However, reference databases do not exist everywhere or are not freely available. Thus, having data quality assessment methods that rely only on intrinsic indicators (i.e. based on data itself without considering external information) would be useful in these cases. This article specifically uses the radial distance as a target quality metric to measure the quality of shapes. Its aim is to build a random-forest based classification method that reconstructs whether this distance is higher or lower than a specified threshold, using only intrinsic indicators as inputs. The classification algorithm is evaluated on a first dataset by computing the ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve and using the AUC (Area Under Curve) as an evaluation metric. The transferability of the resulting algorithm is then evaluated by measuring its performance on a second, distinct dataset. The experiments show that the algorithm performs reasonably well on both the initial and the second dataset, and that intrinsic indicators give relevant information to infer comparison-based shape quality (i.e. the radial distance).

The present study introduces an active-passive system (APS) with phase change material (PCM) integrated into the substructure of the internal walls and ceiling for cooling. To ensure sufficient cooling effect of the system during the daytime cycle, the system must solidify completely during the nighttime cycle and operation costs comparable to the ones of conventional cooling systems. An air gap was formed between the primary wall and ceiling and the PCM substructure and ventilated with the cool outdoor air during the nighttime cycle. A parametric study was performed using ANSYS Fluent followed by the energy performance and operation cost analysis. Different inlet air temperature scenarios (15–20 °C) were tested (suitable PCM thermal characteristics). The required solidification-time of PCM was determined. The model is validated against the experimental tests. The results show that with the current configuration, the PCM plates can be sufficiently solidified at supply air temperatures of 17 °C and below. If the system is ventilated with inlet air temperatures above 17 °C, additional cooling options must be considered. The study also determines the energy performance of the system under the chosen conditions and compares its feasibility to the conventional cooling systems (energy efficiency class A+++ and G air-conditioning device).

Subduction redistributes elements between Earth's principal geochemical reservoirs, modifying the chemical composition of Earth's mantle, crust, atmosphere, and hydrosphere, and consequently having an impact on the evolution of life itself. Subduction of surface material that has been geochemically modified by low-temperature processes leads to mineralogical and chemical heterogeneities in mantle reservoirs over time and is recorded in modern ocean island basalts. One of the principal geochemical end members of the heterogeneous deep mantle, the enriched mantle 1 (EM-1) source of Pitcairn Island, has been attributed to the contribution of crustal material with vastly different chemical compositions and ages. The Mo isotope composition of lavas from Pitcairn Island constrains the nature of this recycled crustal component. Pitcairn lavas have elevated δMo relative to the depleted mantle. The high δMo is associated with high time-integrated Th/U and Rb/Sr, and low time-integrated Sm/Nd and U/Pb. These characteristics can be attributed to the recycling of nearly pristine pelagic sediments that were deposited in a Proterozoic anoxic deep-ocean into the sources of the Pitcairn Island lavas. The isotope composition of these lavas is similar to that of EM-1 hotspots from the South Atlantic, indicating the addition of reduced sediments in both of Earth's large low shear wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs). Consistent data from both locations imply that the subduction cycling of sedimentary redox-sensitive elements such as Mo, S, Se, and U into arc magmas was in these cases inefficient in the Precambrian and the chemical and isotopic signature of reduced sediments is preserved in the source of ocean island basalts bearing the EM-1 characteristics. International audience; Mercury (Hg) fulminate was used as a primary fuse in World War (WW) munitions, and may consequently be a Hg source for impacted environments. Mercury is a conspicuous and persistent pollutant, with methylmercury (MeHg) acting as a notorious neurotoxin. Considerable amounts of munitions were intentionally dumped in the North Sea and Baltic Sea following the First and Second WWs. After more than 70 years on the seafloor many munitions have corroded and likely release explosive compounds, including Hg fulminate. The Germany coastal city of Kiel was a manufacturing centre for submarines, and accordingly a prominent target for bombing and post-war disarmament. We collected water and sediment samples around Kiel Bay to assess regional levels and quantify any Hg contamination. The munition dump site Kolberger Heide (KH) and a former anti-aircraft training center Dänisch-Nienhof are situated in Kiel Bay, and were targeted for sampling. Sediment Hg concentrations around KH were notably elevated. Average Hg concentrations in KH sediments were 125 ± 76 ng/g, compared to 14 ± 18 ng/g at background (control) sites. In contrast, dissolved Hg in the water column exhibited no site variations, all ranging between 0.8 and 2.1 pM. Methylmercury in sediments and waters did not have enhanced concentrations amongst sites (400 pmol m−2 d−1 MeHg) at one KH location, however remaining cores had low to no Hg and MeHg output (<0–27 pmol m−2 d−1 MeHg). Thus, sediments in Kiel Bay proximate to WW munitions could harbor and form a source of Hg, however water column mixing and removal processes attenuate any discharge from the seafloor to overlying waters.

The research's originality lies in its combination of behavioral data, urban freight transport and environmental models, and cost-benefit analysis methodologies. Through this methodological framework, we examine the costs and benefits of implementing a low emission zone using different scenarios with varying perimeters and environmental requirements in the urban area of Lyon. The findings of this study suggest that increasing the size of the perimeter is more economically and environmentally efficient than tightening the level of environmental standards. Axhausen;With the introduction of automated vehicles, new operating regimes for public transport services will become possible. A station-based Automated Transit on Demand service could be an attractive alternative to the current modes of transportation. In this paper, the impact of this kind of service on the modal share for the city of Zurich, Switzerland, and its surrounding area is modeled using an agent-based approach. Different scenarios regarding the operating area, pricing scheme, and a cordon charge are tested on their potential to make use of the benefits of the new service while preventing an overflow of automated vehicles in the urban core. Results show that if left unconstrained the proposed service can substantially impact the demand for public transport. A pricing scheme that bases the pricing of the new service relative to the accessibility of the current public transport service is a promising solution to increase the accessibility of the rural areas while maintaining a high modal share for public transport in the city center. Finally, using an optimization algorithm we show that the total car-fleet and public parking space can be reduced at the cost of a slight increase in vehicle kilometers traveled. Moreover, we find that the cost coverage of the proposed transit service is potentially much higher in comparison to current public transport services. Journal of Urban Mobility, 3 ISSN:2667-0917
