Ernst; Mohamed Khalil Bensalah; Ulf Söderlund;International audience; Analysis of an airborne geophysical data covering the Tasiast-Tijirit Terrane in the western part of the ReguibatShield (including the 1:200,000 geological sheets of Chami, Ahmeyim and Atar), provided an improved mappingof mafic dyke swarms, structural features, and hydrothermal alteration zones. It also extended the mapping intoextensive areas covered by sand. A low-altitude (100 m) airborne survey collected high-resolution magnetic andgamma-ray spectrometry data. The magnetic data were enhanced using techniques such as reduction to the pole,analytic signal andfirst vertical derivative, and revealed dyke swarms with trends of NNE-SSW to NE-SW, NW-SEto WNW-ESE and E-W. The use of the Euler deconvolution method provided constraints on the continuity andthe depth of magnetic sources.Gamma-ray spectrometry which maps the three main radioactive elements, i.e. potassium, uranium andthorium helped discriminate lithological units of the Archean basement, notably felsic intrusions. The radio-metric data also helped delineate potassic alteration zones, which could testify to hydrothermal activities ofrelevance to sulfide mineralisation.

In general, these deposits are several meters thick and cover coarser substrate. Questions remain about their storage capability for fine particles and carbon. This work investigates the sedimentation of the WGMP in order to develop a first estimate of organic carbon (OC) burial. Interface sediment cores were collected at nine stations along two cross-shelf transects in October-November 2016. X-radiograph imaging and grain-size analyses were used to characterize sedimentary structures. 210 Pb xs depth profiles were established to calculate sediment (SAR) and mass (MAR) accumulation rates. Sedimentary structures indicate episodic sandy inputs overlying older deposits at proximal sites, and relatively continuous sedimentation at seaward locations. On the outer-central portion of the northern transect, a maximum SAR (0.47 cm yr − 1) was observed, suggesting a depocenter. On the southern transect, excluding two stations where sedimentary inputs appear massive but sporadic, the SARs are lower (<0.3 cm yr − 1). Quantitative estimates of OC burial rates increase seaward with a maximum of 45 gC m − 2 yr − 1. To evaluate carbon loading independent of grain-size variability, OC values were normalized to surface area of sediments (SA). Interestingly, a qualitative comparison of OC burial efficiencies using the OC/SA ratio highlights three groups of sites (low, medium and relatively high OC burial efficiency) which are likely related both to different sedimentary environments and variable deposition conditions linked to local environmental conditions and depth. This work highlights the likely control of hydrodynamic intensity and sedimentary inputs on the amount of OC stored in the WGMP sediments.

These glasses, found near the town of Pica at four localities separated by up to 70 km, are neither fulgurites, nor volcanic glasses, nor metallurgical slags related to anthropic activity, but show close similarities to other glasses that have been previously attributed to large airbursts created by meteoroids entering the Earth's atmosphere. The glasses are restricted to specific Late Pleistocene terrains: paleo-wetlands and soils rich in organic matter with SiO2-rich plant remains, salts and carbonates. 14C dating and paleomagnetic data indicate that the glasses were formed during at least two distinct periods. This rules out the hypothesis of a single large airburst as the cause of surface melting. Instead, burning of organic-rich soils in dried-out grassy wetlands during climate oscillations between wet and dry periods can account for the formation of the Pica glasses. Large oases did indeed form in the hyperarid Atacama Desert due to elevated groundwater tables and increased surface discharge during the Central Andean Pluvial Event (roughly coeval with the Mystery interval and Younger Dryas). Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the other surface glasses previously attributed to extraterrestrial events.

ABSTRACTTime‐lapse applications of seismic methods have been recently suggested in the near‐surface scale to track hydrological properties variations due to climate, water level changes, or permafrost thaw, for instance. But when it comes to traveltime tomography or surface‐wave dispersion inversion, a careful estimation of the data variability associated with the picking process must be considered prior to any time‐lapse interpretation. In this study, we propose to estimate picking errors that are due to the inherent subjectivity of human operators, using statistical analysis based on picking repeatability. Two seismic datasets were collected along the same profile under distinct hydrological conditions across a granite–micaschist contact at the Ploemeur hydrological observatory (France). Both datasets were recorded using identical equipment and acquisition parameters. A thorough statistical analysis is conducted to estimate picking uncertainties, at the 99% confidence level, for both P‐wave first arrival time and surface‐wave phase velocity. With the suggested workflow, we are able to identify 33% of the P‐wave traveltimes and 16% of the surface‐wave dispersion data, which can be considered significant enough for time‐lapse interpretations. In this selected portion of the data, point‐by‐point differences highlight important variations linked to different hydrogeological properties of the subsurface. These variations show strong contrasts with a non‐monotonous behaviour along the line, offering new insights to better constrain the dynamics of this hydrosystem.

García; Alicia Kirschbaum;Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality.The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater. In a volcanic area, sedimentation rates are directly affected by the history of the volcano and its eruptions. Here, we investigate the impact of Mt. Fuji Volcano (Japan) on Lake Motosu and its watershed. The lacustrine infill is studied by combining seismic reflection profiles and sediment cores. We show evidence of changes in sedimentation patterns during the depositional history of Lake Motosu. The frequency of large mass-transport deposits recorded within the lake decreases over the Holocene. Before ~ 8000 cal yr BP, large sublacustrine landslides and turbidites were filling the lacustrine depression. After 8000 cal yr BP, only one large sublacustrine landslide was recorded. The change in sedimentation pattern coincides with a change in sediment accumulation rate. Over the last 8000 cal yr BP, the sediment accumulation rate was not sufficient enough to produce large sublacustrine slope failures. Consequently, the frequency of large mass-transport deposits decreased and only turbidites resulting from surficial slope reworking occurred. These constitute the main sedimentary infill of the deep basin. We link the change in sediment accumulation rate with (i) climate and vegetation changes; and (ii) the Mt. Fuji eruptions which affected the Lake Motosu watershed by reducing its size and strongly modified its topography. Moreover, this study highlights that the deposition of turbidites in the deep basin of Lake Motosu is mainly controlled by the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor. Two large mass-transport deposits, occurring around ~ 8000 cal yr BP and ~ 2000 cal yr BP respectively, modified the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor and therefore changed the turbidite depositional pattern of Lake Motosu.

This paper presents, for the first time, the evolution of the local heterogeneous strain field around intra-granular cracking in polycrystalline ice, at the onset of tertiary creep. Owing to the high homologous temperature conditions and relatively low compressive stress applied, stress concentration at the crack tips is relaxed by plastic mechanisms associated with dynamic recrystallization. Strain field evolution followed by digital image correlation (DIC) directly shows the redistribution of strain during crack opening, but also the redistribution driven by crack tip plasticity mechanisms and recrystallization. Associated local changes in microstructure induce modifications of the local stress field evidenced by crack closure during deformation. At the ductile-to-brittle transition in ice, micro-cracking and dynamic recrystallization mechanisms can co-exist and interact, the later being efficient to relax stress concentration at the crack tips.

However, climatic constrains are often used in the Central Apennine to estimate long term (> 10 ka) fault slip rate. In addition slip rate assessments based on offset morphotectonic markers on the main branches of fault systems and encompassing several seismic cycles (> 10 ka) are sparse. This is particularly true for the Monte Vettore-Monte Bove fault system which triggered the 2016-2017 seismic sequence. We thus provide new assessment for the vertical slip rates along the Mt Vettore-Mt Bove fault system. &#160;Offset measurements were made using a 5-cm resolution DEM obtained through a drone survey and constrain a fault scarp height of 15.5 &#177; 1.4 m and a cumulative offset of 32-40.5 m. Samples were collected from the Valle Lunga terminal moraine at 1710 m asl and yield <sup>36</sup>Cl exposure ages of 12.7 + 2.2/-1.9 ka while the flat, abraded surface located on top of the tectonic scarp yield <sup>36</sup>Cl exposure ages of 23.4 + 5.3/-4.3 ka. Assuming the offset started to accumulate when climate conditions allow its preservation, thus once the surface was abandoned, we constrain a vertical slip rate of 1.2 &#177; 0.2 mm/yr along the master branch of the Mt Vettore normal fault. &#160;This rate is higher than the ones previously obtained from trenches along secondary splays of the Mt Vettore-Mt Bove and on the Norcia fault systems. Besides, the yielded chronology for the last glacial maximum in that area at ~23 ka is in good agreement with the timing previously proposed for the LGM in the Apennines.</p>

ABSTRACT Understanding the processes that may be at the origin of major earthquakes in subduction zones is highly challenging, especially in the case of slowly converging areas such as the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. Our study reveals a recorded increase in seismicity rate and cumulative seismic moment over the last two decades offshore Martinique island and, particularly, in the presumed rupture area of the major historical 1839 earthquake. This sustained seismicity is shared between extensive intermediate depth activity since the 2007 Mw 7.4 earthquake that occurred about 20 km north of Martinique and a compressive seismic cluster located in the seismogenic zone of the subduction zone. We also observe a downward migration of the seismicity along the plate interface up to a 60–65 km depth and a recorded increase in the magnitudes of the earthquakes. All these observations may indicate ongoing changes along the plate boundary interface near the area of the historical major rupture of 1839, although more detailed statistical studies and additional data are necessary to confirm this trend.

It also extended the mapping intoextensive areas covered by sand. A low-altitude (100 m) airborne survey collected high-resolution magnetic andgamma-ray spectrometry data. The magnetic data were enhanced using techniques such as reduction to the pole,analytic signal andfirst vertical derivative, and revealed dyke swarms with trends of NNE-SSW to NE-SW, NW-SEto WNW-ESE and E-W. The use of the Euler deconvolution method provided constraints on the continuity andthe depth of magnetic sources.Gamma-ray spectrometry which maps the three main radioactive elements, i.e. potassium, uranium andthorium helped discriminate lithological units of the Archean basement, notably felsic intrusions. The radio-metric data also helped delineate potassic alteration zones, which could testify to hydrothermal activities ofrelevance to sulfide mineralisation.

In general, these deposits are several meters thick and cover coarser substrate. Questions remain about their storage capability for fine particles and carbon. This work investigates the sedimentation of the WGMP in order to develop a first estimate of organic carbon (OC) burial. Interface sediment cores were collected at nine stations along two cross-shelf transects in October-November 2016. X-radiograph imaging and grain-size analyses were used to characterize sedimentary structures. 210 Pb xs depth profiles were established to calculate sediment (SAR) and mass (MAR) accumulation rates. Sedimentary structures indicate episodic sandy inputs overlying older deposits at proximal sites, and relatively continuous sedimentation at seaward locations. On the outer-central portion of the northern transect, a maximum SAR (0.47 cm yr − 1) was observed, suggesting a depocenter. On the southern transect, excluding two stations where sedimentary inputs appear massive but sporadic, the SARs are lower (<0.3 cm yr − 1). Quantitative estimates of OC burial rates increase seaward with a maximum of 45 gC m − 2 yr − 1. To evaluate carbon loading independent of grain-size variability, OC values were normalized to surface area of sediments (SA). Interestingly, a qualitative comparison of OC burial efficiencies using the OC/SA ratio highlights three groups of sites (low, medium and relatively high OC burial efficiency) which are likely related both to different sedimentary environments and variable deposition conditions linked to local environmental conditions and depth. This work highlights the likely control of hydrodynamic intensity and sedimentary inputs on the amount of OC stored in the WGMP sediments.

These glasses, found near the town of Pica at four localities separated by up to 70 km, are neither fulgurites, nor volcanic glasses, nor metallurgical slags related to anthropic activity, but show close similarities to other glasses that have been previously attributed to large airbursts created by meteoroids entering the Earth's atmosphere. The glasses are restricted to specific Late Pleistocene terrains: paleo-wetlands and soils rich in organic matter with SiO2-rich plant remains, salts and carbonates. 14C dating and paleomagnetic data indicate that the glasses were formed during at least two distinct periods. This rules out the hypothesis of a single large airburst as the cause of surface melting. Instead, burning of organic-rich soils in dried-out grassy wetlands during climate oscillations between wet and dry periods can account for the formation of the Pica glasses. Large oases did indeed form in the hyperarid Atacama Desert due to elevated groundwater tables and increased surface discharge during the Central Andean Pluvial Event (roughly coeval with the Mystery interval and Younger Dryas). Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the other surface glasses previously attributed to extraterrestrial events.

ABSTRACTTime‐lapse applications of seismic methods have been recently suggested in the near‐surface scale to track hydrological properties variations due to climate, water level changes, or permafrost thaw, for instance. But when it comes to traveltime tomography or surface‐wave dispersion inversion, a careful estimation of the data variability associated with the picking process must be considered prior to any time‐lapse interpretation. In this study, we propose to estimate picking errors that are due to the inherent subjectivity of human operators, using statistical analysis based on picking repeatability. Two seismic datasets were collected along the same profile under distinct hydrological conditions across a granite–micaschist contact at the Ploemeur hydrological observatory (France). Both datasets were recorded using identical equipment and acquisition parameters. A thorough statistical analysis is conducted to estimate picking uncertainties, at the 99% confidence level, for both P‐wave first arrival time and surface‐wave phase velocity. With the suggested workflow, we are able to identify 33% of the P‐wave traveltimes and 16% of the surface‐wave dispersion data, which can be considered significant enough for time‐lapse interpretations. In this selected portion of the data, point‐by‐point differences highlight important variations linked to different hydrogeological properties of the subsurface. These variations show strong contrasts with a non‐monotonous behaviour along the line, offering new insights to better constrain the dynamics of this hydrosystem.

García; Alicia Kirschbaum;Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality.The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater. In a volcanic area, sedimentation rates are directly affected by the history of the volcano and its eruptions. Here, we investigate the impact of Mt. Fuji Volcano (Japan) on Lake Motosu and its watershed. The lacustrine infill is studied by combining seismic reflection profiles and sediment cores. We show evidence of changes in sedimentation patterns during the depositional history of Lake Motosu. The frequency of large mass-transport deposits recorded within the lake decreases over the Holocene. Before ~ 8000 cal yr BP, large sublacustrine landslides and turbidites were filling the lacustrine depression. After 8000 cal yr BP, only one large sublacustrine landslide was recorded. The change in sedimentation pattern coincides with a change in sediment accumulation rate. Over the last 8000 cal yr BP, the sediment accumulation rate was not sufficient enough to produce large sublacustrine slope failures. Consequently, the frequency of large mass-transport deposits decreased and only turbidites resulting from surficial slope reworking occurred. These constitute the main sedimentary infill of the deep basin. We link the change in sediment accumulation rate with (i) climate and vegetation changes; and (ii) the Mt. Fuji eruptions which affected the Lake Motosu watershed by reducing its size and strongly modified its topography. Moreover, this study highlights that the deposition of turbidites in the deep basin of Lake Motosu is mainly controlled by the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor. Two large mass-transport deposits, occurring around ~ 8000 cal yr BP and ~ 2000 cal yr BP respectively, modified the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor and therefore changed the turbidite depositional pattern of Lake Motosu.

This paper presents, for the first time, the evolution of the local heterogeneous strain field around intra-granular cracking in polycrystalline ice, at the onset of tertiary creep. Owing to the high homologous temperature conditions and relatively low compressive stress applied, stress concentration at the crack tips is relaxed by plastic mechanisms associated with dynamic recrystallization. Strain field evolution followed by digital image correlation (DIC) directly shows the redistribution of strain during crack opening, but also the redistribution driven by crack tip plasticity mechanisms and recrystallization. Associated local changes in microstructure induce modifications of the local stress field evidenced by crack closure during deformation. At the ductile-to-brittle transition in ice, micro-cracking and dynamic recrystallization mechanisms can co-exist and interact, the later being efficient to relax stress concentration at the crack tips.

However, climatic constrains are often used in the Central Apennine to estimate long term (> 10 ka) fault slip rate. In addition slip rate assessments based on offset morphotectonic markers on the main branches of fault systems and encompassing several seismic cycles (> 10 ka) are sparse. This is particularly true for the Monte Vettore-Monte Bove fault system which triggered the 2016-2017 seismic sequence. We thus provide new assessment for the vertical slip rates along the Mt Vettore-Mt Bove fault system. &#160;Offset measurements were made using a 5-cm resolution DEM obtained through a drone survey and constrain a fault scarp height of 15.5 &#177; 1.4 m and a cumulative offset of 32-40.5 m. Samples were collected from the Valle Lunga terminal moraine at 1710 m asl and yield <sup>36</sup>Cl exposure ages of 12.7 + 2.2/-1.9 ka while the flat, abraded surface located on top of the tectonic scarp yield <sup>36</sup>Cl exposure ages of 23.4 + 5.3/-4.3 ka. Assuming the offset started to accumulate when climate conditions allow its preservation, thus once the surface was abandoned, we constrain a vertical slip rate of 1.2 &#177; 0.2 mm/yr along the master branch of the Mt Vettore normal fault. &#160;This rate is higher than the ones previously obtained from trenches along secondary splays of the Mt Vettore-Mt Bove and on the Norcia fault systems. Besides, the yielded chronology for the last glacial maximum in that area at ~23 ka is in good agreement with the timing previously proposed for the LGM in the Apennines.</p>

ABSTRACT Understanding the processes that may be at the origin of major earthquakes in subduction zones is highly challenging, especially in the case of slowly converging areas such as the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. Our study reveals a recorded increase in seismicity rate and cumulative seismic moment over the last two decades offshore Martinique island and, particularly, in the presumed rupture area of the major historical 1839 earthquake. This sustained seismicity is shared between extensive intermediate depth activity since the 2007 Mw 7.4 earthquake that occurred about 20 km north of Martinique and a compressive seismic cluster located in the seismogenic zone of the subduction zone. We also observe a downward migration of the seismicity along the plate interface up to a 60–65 km depth and a recorded increase in the magnitudes of the earthquakes. All these observations may indicate ongoing changes along the plate boundary interface near the area of the historical major rupture of 1839, although more detailed statistical studies and additional data are necessary to confirm this trend.
