    In this study, two different applications of the combination of XRF and µCT will be discussed. The first application is a way of obtaining chemical information on the different compounds in the inner part of a granite. This information can not be measured directly with XRF, but can be derived from the XRF spectra and µCT data together. In the second application, the chemical elements present in volcanic rock are analysed, providing information about their origin.

    Résultats des mesures des concentrations en particules fines au sein d’une porcherie d’engraissement Description du sujet. Cette note de recherche présente des résultats de mesures des concentrations en particules fines au sein d’une porcherie d’engraissement.Objectifs. Les objectifs de la présente étude étaient de calculer des corrélations entre différentes classes de taille de particules fines (PM) relevées en porcherie d’engraissement et de comparer la taille des particules (PSD) au cours d’une période d\'engraissement et en fonction de deux modalités de logement et de deux protocoles de nettoyage.Méthode. Les données de deux périodes consécutives d\'engraissement dans une porcherie commerciale ont été utilisées.Résultats. Des corrélations très fortes ont été observées entre les concentrations intérieures de PM10 et PM2,5. En fonction de l\'instrument de mesure, les corrélations de ces fractions avec PM1 étaient fortes ou faibles. Dans la présente étude, aucune différence de PSD n’a été trouvée entre les deux modes d’hébergement ni entre les deux protocoles de nettoyage.Conclusions. Les résultats de cette étude montrent des corrélations très fortes entre les concentrations intérieures de PM10 et PM2,5. Dans la présente étude, aucune différence dans l’évolution de la taille des particules n’a été relevée. Description of the subject. This research note discusses the results of measurements of particulate matter concentrations inside a pig fattening facility.Objectives. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the correlations between the different size fractions of indoor particulate matter (PM) inside a pig fattening facility and to investigate the evolution of particle size distribution (PSD) through a fattening period and between two housing systems and two cleaning protocols.Method. Data from two consecutive fattening periods in a commercial pig barn were used.Results. Very high correlations were found between PM10 and PM2.5 indoor concentrations. Depending on the measuring instrument, high or low correlations were found between PM1 and PM10 or PM2.5 indoor concentrations. No differences in PSD could be found between the two housing systems or the two cleaning protocols.Conclusions. The results from the present study showed high correlations between the indoor concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5. In the present study, no differences in PSD were found.

    During the Late Republic and Early Empire, central Adriatic Italy was one of the most urbanised regions in the Roman world and most cities were extensively equipped with monumental buildings, often lavishly decorated with imported marbles and sculptures. This contribution presents the results of an archaeological and archaeometric study of the architectural and sculptural marbles used in this central Adriatic area. The determination of the geographical origin of white and polychrome marbles was carried out through macroscopic examination and laboratory investigations (optical petrography, X-ray diffraction, oxygen and carbon stable isotopes). The analyses revealed the presence of a wide range of lithotypes from Italy, Greece (mainland and Aegean islands), Asia Minor, North Africa and Egypt, including varieties of white marble from Carrara, Proconnesos, Pentelikon, Thasos, Paros and Dokimeion.

    The COVID-19 pandemic increased the awareness and importance of infectious pathogens as contaminant in the indoor air, especially for non-residential buildings with a high occupational density like schools. During the COVID-19 pandemic air cleaning is often proposed as mitigation strategy for infectious risk in these type of buildings. However, indoor air quality (IAQ) in general comprises of a large range of possible contaminants and factors that can equally impact the health, comfort and well-being of occupants. In this context, a study was conducted in Flanders (Belgium) with the aim of investigating the potential impact of ventilation and air cleaning on the IAQ and infection risk control in Flemish public spaces. This paper describes part of this larger study, focusing on the assessments carried out in two primary schools. In the first school, which did not have a mechanical ventilation system, 4 classrooms were assessed for three weeks. In the second school, 4 classrooms with centralized mechanical ventilation system were assessed in two separate measurement campaigns of 3 weeks. Between the two measurement campaigns in school 2, the defects in the mechanical ventilation system which were observed during the first campaign were corrected. In each school, in three of the four classrooms, specific interventions were done after the first week of monitoring, among which the introduction of air cleaners. A fourth class was monitored without intervention. In each classroom, CO2 concentrations, and biological air samples were collected 2 days per week for in-lab qPCR analysis of over 20 genetic markers of respiratory pathogens.     This study examines the resource use and trophic position of nematodes and harpacticoid copepods at the genus/species level in an estuarine food web in Zostera noltii beds and in adjacent bare sediments using the natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Microphytobenthos and/or epiphytes are among the main resources of most taxa, but seagrass detritus and sediment particulate organic matter contribute as well to meiobenthos nutrition, which are also available in deeper sediment layers and in unvegetated patches close to seagrass beds. A predominant dependence on chemoautotrophic bacteria was demonstrated for the nematode genus Terschellingia and the copepod family Cletodidae. A predatory feeding mode is illustrated for Paracomesoma and other Comesomatidae, which were previously considered first-level consumers (deposit feeders) according to their buccal morphology. The considerable variation found in both resource use and trophic level among nematode genera from the same feeding type, and even among congeneric nematode species, shows that the interpretation of nematode feeding ecology based purely on mouth morphology should be avoided.

    A material can only be considered as a waste if it has no economic value. Transforming waste products, that would normally end up in landfills, into raw materials and products that have economic value is one of the main goals in a zero waste mindset and one of the possibilities to ensure a sustainable future. This thesis focuses on a valorization route for steel slag and CO2, two substances which are generally considered as waste products. When a compact of fine grained steel slag grains is exposed to pressurized CO2, a carbonation reaction is triggered, which binds the grains together and allows to generate building blocks with a high compressive strength. The reactions associated with the carbonation process are an interplay between CO2, water and minerals and take place in the pore space of the steel slag compact.     The impact of ocean acidification and increased water temperature on marine ecosystems, in particular those involving calcifying organisms, has been gradually recognised. We examined the individual and combined effects of increased pCO2 (180 ppmV CO2, 380 ppmV CO 2 and 750 ppmV CO2 corresponding to past, present and future CO2 conditions, respectively) and temperature (13 °C and 18 °C) during the exponential growth phase of the coccolithophore E. huxleyi using batch culture experiments. We showed that cellular production rate of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) increased from the present to the future CO2 treatments at 13 deg;C. A significant effect of pCO2 and of temperature on calcification was found, manifesting itself in a lower cellular production rate of Particulate Inorganic Carbon (PIC) as well as a lower PIC: POC ratio at future CO2 levels and at 18 °C. Coccosphere-sized particles showed a size reduction with both increasing temperature and CO 2 concentration. The influence of the different treatments on coccolith morphology was studied by categorizing SEM coccolith micrographs. The number of well-formed coccoliths decreased with increasing pCO 2 while temperature did not have a significant impact on coccolith morphology. No interacting effects of pCO2 and temperature were observed on calcite production, coccolith morphology or on coccosphere size.     We evaluate the ISBACC (Interaction Soil Biosphere Atmosphere Carbon Cycle) land surface model (LSM) over the Amazon forest, and propose a revised parameterization of photosynthesis, including new soil water stress and autotrophic respiration (RA) functions. The revised version allows the model to better capture the energy, water and carbon fluxes when compared to five Amazonian flux towers. The performance of ISBACC is slightly site dependent although similar to the widely evaluated LSM ORCHIDEE (Organizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems – version 1187), which is based on different assumptions. Changes made to the autotrophic respiration functions, including a vertical profile of leaf respiration, lead to yearly simulated carbon use efficiency (CUE) and carbon stocks which is consistent with an ecophysiological meta-analysis conducted on three Amazonian sites. Despite these major improvements, ISBACC struggles to capture the apparent seasonality of the carbon fluxes derived from the flux tower estimations. However, there is still no consensus on the seasonality of carbon fluxes over the Amazon, stressing a need for more observations as well as a better understanding of the main drivers of autotrophic respiration.

    The monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs) levoglucosan, galactosan and mannosan are products of incomplete combustion and pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses, and are found to be major constituents of biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles. Hence, ambient aerosol particle concentrations of levoglucosan are commonly used to study the influence of residential wood burning, agricultural waste burning and wildfire emissions on ambient air quality. A European-wide intercomparison on the analysis of the three monosaccharide anhydrides was conducted based on ambient aerosol quartz fiber filter samples collected at a Norwegian urban background site during winter. Thus, the samples' content of MAs is representative for BB particles originating from residential wood burning. The purpose of the intercomparison was to examine the comparability of the great diversity of analytical methods used for analysis of levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan in ambient aerosol filter samples. Thirteen laboratories participated, of which three applied high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC), four used high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and six resorted to gas chromatography (GC). The analytical methods used were of such diversity that they should be considered as thirteen different analytical methods. All of the thirteen laboratories reported levels of levoglucosan, whereas nine reported data for mannosan and/or galactosan. Eight of the thirteen laboratories reported levels for all three isomers. The accuracy for levoglucosan, presented as the mean percentage error (PE) for each participating laboratory, varied from −63 to 20%; however, for 62% of the laboratories the mean PE was within ±10%, and for 85% the mean PE was within ±20%. For mannosan, the corresponding range was −60 to 69%, but as for levoglucosan, the range was substantially smaller for a subselection of the laboratories; i.e. for 33% of the laboratories the mean PE was within ±10%. For galactosan, the mean PE for the participating laboratories ranged from −84 to 593%, and as for mannosan 33% of the laboratories reported a mean PE within ±10%. The variability of the various analytical methods, as defined by their minimum and maximum PE value, was typically better for levoglucosan than for mannosan and galactosan, ranging from 3.2 to 41% for levoglucosan, from 10 to 67% for mannosan and from 6 to 364% for galactosan. For the levoglucosan to mannosan ratio, which may be used to assess the relative importance of softwood versus hardwood burning, the variability only ranged from 3.5 to 24 . To our knowledge, this is the first major intercomparison on analytical methods used to quantify monosaccharide anhydrides in ambient aerosol filter samples conducted and reported in the scientific literature. The results show that for levoglucosan the accuracy is only slightly lower than that reported for analysis of SO42- (sulfate) on filter samples, a constituent that has been analysed by numerous laboratories for several decades, typically by ion chromatography and which is considered a fairly easy constituent to measure. Hence, the results obtained for levoglucosan with respect to accuracy are encouraging and suggest that levels of levoglucosan, and to a lesser extent mannosan and galactosan, obtained by most of the analytical methods currently used to quantify monosaccharide anhydrides in ambient aerosol filter samples, are comparable. Finally, the various analytical methods used in the current study should be tested for other aerosol matrices and concentrations as well, the most obvious being summertime aerosol samples affected by wildfires and/or agricultural fires.

    In this study, two different applications of the combination of XRF and µCT will be discussed. The first application is a way of obtaining chemical information on the different compounds in the inner part of a granite. This information can not be measured directly with XRF, but can be derived from the XRF spectra and µCT data together. In the second application, the chemical elements present in volcanic rock are analysed, providing information about their origin.

Cette note de recherche présente des résultats de mesures des concentrations en particules fines au sein d’une porcherie d’engraissement.Objectifs. Les objectifs de la présente étude étaient de calculer des corrélations entre différentes classes de taille de particules fines (PM) relevées en porcherie d’engraissement et de comparer la taille des particules (PSD) au cours d’une période d\'engraissement et en fonction de deux modalités de logement et de deux protocoles de nettoyage.Méthode. Les données de deux périodes consécutives d\'engraissement dans une porcherie commerciale ont été utilisées.Résultats. Des corrélations très fortes ont été observées entre les concentrations intérieures de PM10 et PM2,5. En fonction de l\'instrument de mesure, les corrélations de ces fractions avec PM1 étaient fortes ou faibles. Dans la présente étude, aucune différence de PSD n’a été trouvée entre les deux modes d’hébergement ni entre les deux protocoles de nettoyage.Conclusions. Les résultats de cette étude montrent des corrélations très fortes entre les concentrations intérieures de PM10 et PM2,5. Dans la présente étude, aucune différence dans l’évolution de la taille des particules n’a été relevée. Description of the subject. This research note discusses the results of measurements of particulate matter concentrations inside a pig fattening facility.Objectives. The objectives of the present study were to investigate the correlations between the different size fractions of indoor particulate matter (PM) inside a pig fattening facility and to investigate the evolution of particle size distribution (PSD) through a fattening period and between two housing systems and two cleaning protocols.Method. Data from two consecutive fattening periods in a commercial pig barn were used.Results. Very high correlations were found between PM10 and PM2.5 indoor concentrations. Depending on the measuring instrument, high or low correlations were found between PM1 and PM10 or PM2.5 indoor concentrations. No differences in PSD could be found between the two housing systems or the two cleaning protocols.Conclusions. The results from the present study showed high correlations between the indoor concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5. In the present study, no differences in PSD were found.

    During the Late Republic and Early Empire, central Adriatic Italy was one of the most urbanised regions in the Roman world and most cities were extensively equipped with monumental buildings, often lavishly decorated with imported marbles and sculptures. This contribution presents the results of an archaeological and archaeometric study of the architectural and sculptural marbles used in this central Adriatic area. The determination of the geographical origin of white and polychrome marbles was carried out through macroscopic examination and laboratory investigations (optical petrography, X-ray diffraction, oxygen and carbon stable isotopes). The analyses revealed the presence of a wide range of lithotypes from Italy, Greece (mainland and Aegean islands), Asia Minor, North Africa and Egypt, including varieties of white marble from Carrara, Proconnesos, Pentelikon, Thasos, Paros and Dokimeion.

    The COVID-19 pandemic increased the awareness and importance of infectious pathogens as contaminant in the indoor air, especially for non-residential buildings with a high occupational density like schools. During the COVID-19 pandemic air cleaning is often proposed as mitigation strategy for infectious risk in these type of buildings. However, indoor air quality (IAQ) in general comprises of a large range of possible contaminants and factors that can equally impact the health, comfort and well-being of occupants. In this context, a study was conducted in Flanders (Belgium) with the aim of investigating the potential impact of ventilation and air cleaning on the IAQ and infection risk control in Flemish public spaces. This paper describes part of this larger study, focusing on the assessments carried out in two primary schools. In the first school, which did not have a mechanical ventilation system, 4 classrooms were assessed for three weeks. In the second school, 4 classrooms with centralized mechanical ventilation system were assessed in two separate measurement campaigns of 3 weeks. Between the two measurement campaigns in school 2, the defects in the mechanical ventilation system which were observed during the first campaign were corrected. In each school, in three of the four classrooms, specific interventions were done after the first week of monitoring, among which the introduction of air cleaners. A fourth class was monitored without intervention. In each classroom, CO2 concentrations, and biological air samples were collected 2 days per week for in-lab qPCR analysis of over 20 genetic markers of respiratory pathogens.     This study examines the resource use and trophic position of nematodes and harpacticoid copepods at the genus/species level in an estuarine food web in Zostera noltii beds and in adjacent bare sediments using the natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Microphytobenthos and/or epiphytes are among the main resources of most taxa, but seagrass detritus and sediment particulate organic matter contribute as well to meiobenthos nutrition, which are also available in deeper sediment layers and in unvegetated patches close to seagrass beds. A predominant dependence on chemoautotrophic bacteria was demonstrated for the nematode genus Terschellingia and the copepod family Cletodidae. A predatory feeding mode is illustrated for Paracomesoma and other Comesomatidae, which were previously considered first-level consumers (deposit feeders) according to their buccal morphology. The considerable variation found in both resource use and trophic level among nematode genera from the same feeding type, and even among congeneric nematode species, shows that the interpretation of nematode feeding ecology based purely on mouth morphology should be avoided.

    A material can only be considered as a waste if it has no economic value. Transforming waste products, that would normally end up in landfills, into raw materials and products that have economic value is one of the main goals in a zero waste mindset and one of the possibilities to ensure a sustainable future. This thesis focuses on a valorization route for steel slag and CO2, two substances which are generally considered as waste products. When a compact of fine grained steel slag grains is exposed to pressurized CO2, a carbonation reaction is triggered, which binds the grains together and allows to generate building blocks with a high compressive strength. The reactions associated with the carbonation process are an interplay between CO2, water and minerals and take place in the pore space of the steel slag compact.     The impact of ocean acidification and increased water temperature on marine ecosystems, in particular those involving calcifying organisms, has been gradually recognised. We examined the individual and combined effects of increased pCO2 (180 ppmV CO2, 380 ppmV CO 2 and 750 ppmV CO2 corresponding to past, present and future CO2 conditions, respectively) and temperature (13 °C and 18 °C) during the exponential growth phase of the coccolithophore E. huxleyi using batch culture experiments. We showed that cellular production rate of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) increased from the present to the future CO2 treatments at 13 deg;C. A significant effect of pCO2 and of temperature on calcification was found, manifesting itself in a lower cellular production rate of Particulate Inorganic Carbon (PIC) as well as a lower PIC: POC ratio at future CO2 levels and at 18 °C. Coccosphere-sized particles showed a size reduction with both increasing temperature and CO 2 concentration. The influence of the different treatments on coccolith morphology was studied by categorizing SEM coccolith micrographs. The number of well-formed coccoliths decreased with increasing pCO 2 while temperature did not have a significant impact on coccolith morphology. No interacting effects of pCO2 and temperature were observed on calcite production, coccolith morphology or on coccosphere size.     We evaluate the ISBACC (Interaction Soil Biosphere Atmosphere Carbon Cycle) land surface model (LSM) over the Amazon forest, and propose a revised parameterization of photosynthesis, including new soil water stress and autotrophic respiration (RA) functions. The revised version allows the model to better capture the energy, water and carbon fluxes when compared to five Amazonian flux towers. The performance of ISBACC is slightly site dependent although similar to the widely evaluated LSM ORCHIDEE (Organizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems – version 1187), which is based on different assumptions. Changes made to the autotrophic respiration functions, including a vertical profile of leaf respiration, lead to yearly simulated carbon use efficiency (CUE) and carbon stocks which is consistent with an ecophysiological meta-analysis conducted on three Amazonian sites. Despite these major improvements, ISBACC struggles to capture the apparent seasonality of the carbon fluxes derived from the flux tower estimations. However, there is still no consensus on the seasonality of carbon fluxes over the Amazon, stressing a need for more observations as well as a better understanding of the main drivers of autotrophic respiration.

    The monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs) levoglucosan, galactosan and mannosan are products of incomplete combustion and pyrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses, and are found to be major constituents of biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles. Hence, ambient aerosol particle concentrations of levoglucosan are commonly used to study the influence of residential wood burning, agricultural waste burning and wildfire emissions on ambient air quality. A European-wide intercomparison on the analysis of the three monosaccharide anhydrides was conducted based on ambient aerosol quartz fiber filter samples collected at a Norwegian urban background site during winter. Thus, the samples' content of MAs is representative for BB particles originating from residential wood burning. The purpose of the intercomparison was to examine the comparability of the great diversity of analytical methods used for analysis of levoglucosan, mannosan and galactosan in ambient aerosol filter samples. Thirteen laboratories participated, of which three applied high-performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC), four used high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and six resorted to gas chromatography (GC). The analytical methods used were of such diversity that they should be considered as thirteen different analytical methods. All of the thirteen laboratories reported levels of levoglucosan, whereas nine reported data for mannosan and/or galactosan. Eight of the thirteen laboratories reported levels for all three isomers. The accuracy for levoglucosan, presented as the mean percentage error (PE) for each participating laboratory, varied from −63 to 20%; however, for 62% of the laboratories the mean PE was within ±10%, and for 85% the mean PE was within ±20%. For mannosan, the corresponding range was −60 to 69%, but as for levoglucosan, the range was substantially smaller for a subselection of the laboratories; i.e. for 33% of the laboratories the mean PE was within ±10%. For galactosan, the mean PE for the participating laboratories ranged from −84 to 593%, and as for mannosan 33% of the laboratories reported a mean PE within ±10%. The variability of the various analytical methods, as defined by their minimum and maximum PE value, was typically better for levoglucosan than for mannosan and galactosan, ranging from 3.2 to 41% for levoglucosan, from 10 to 67% for mannosan and from 6 to 364% for galactosan. For the levoglucosan to mannosan ratio, which may be used to assess the relative importance of softwood versus hardwood burning, the variability only ranged from 3.5 to 24 . To our knowledge, this is the first major intercomparison on analytical methods used to quantify monosaccharide anhydrides in ambient aerosol filter samples conducted and reported in the scientific literature. The results show that for levoglucosan the accuracy is only slightly lower than that reported for analysis of SO42- (sulfate) on filter samples, a constituent that has been analysed by numerous laboratories for several decades, typically by ion chromatography and which is considered a fairly easy constituent to measure. Hence, the results obtained for levoglucosan with respect to accuracy are encouraging and suggest that levels of levoglucosan, and to a lesser extent mannosan and galactosan, obtained by most of the analytical methods currently used to quantify monosaccharide anhydrides in ambient aerosol filter samples, are comparable. Finally, the various analytical methods used in the current study should be tested for other aerosol matrices and concentrations as well, the most obvious being summertime aerosol samples affected by wildfires and/or agricultural fires.
