The idea behind the DARIAH Research Data Management Working Group is to tackle the challenges associated with the implementation of new FAIR and open data sharing mandates, and offer a unique space for collaboration among representatives of all major arts and humanities disciplines, cultural heritage professionals, and data management experts. More specifically, we are building a knowledge hub for new professionals around data management support (data managers, data stewards, open science officers, subject librarians etc.) from across DARIAH’s national hubs to exchange across the discipline-specific dimension. During our meetings, the conflict between the need for and emergence of new data support roles, and the lack of any established domain-specific curriculum to train them, or, in some cases, even a lack of established good practices, became a recurrent topic which we aimed to address. Instead of embarking on the giant endeavour of curating an exhaustive and authoritative textbook for research data support specialists who work in the arts and humanities field, our idea is to give a snapshot of our own activities in the field and highlight the valuable work of others. Accordingly, the present publication can be read as the written form of a roundtable (or town hall) discussion where experts from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain have come and sat together to report and discuss past or ongoing work, share their fields of interests and provide honest and critical reflections, reveal how their institutions have developed capacities for data support, share their own stories of becoming data support professionals in the domain, and, most importantly, explore together what solutions, tools, practices, and other resources could be used and could be generalised across borders and disciplines. <br> This publication is the result of the Working Group’s first writing sprint, held between the 23 and 24 June 2022 at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN), in the Staszic Palace. The event was made possible by the DARIAH third Working Groups’ (WG) Funding Scheme Call for the years 2021–2023 and the resulting grant, which was administered by the Digital Humanities Centre at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN).

Metrical and rhythmical poetry analysis is founded on the systematic statistical analysis and comparison of sonic devices (e.g., rhythmic patterns) that emerge from a combination of pre-established aesthetic and structural rules and the poet's abilities and creative genius to convey a given message adhering to the said constraints. These rhythmical patterns, which have been traditionally obtained by means of a careful close reading of the poems, in a process known as “scansion,” can now be obtained and made visible by automatic means. However, the visualization literature is still scarce on approaches that allow an insightful close and distant reading of the rhythmical patterns in a poetry corpus. In this work, we report our initial efforts in characterizing of the visualization design space of distant and close reading of poetic rhythm. By employing a digital version of a corpus of 11,268 verses originally written by the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García-Lorca (1898–1936), we could craft several prototypical visualizations representative of the inherent complexity of the problem which we expect to employ in future user studies and that we share here with the rest of the community to foster further discussion around this interesting topic.

Academic research about digital non-Latin script (hereafter: NLS) research data can pose a number of challenges just because the material is from a region where the Latin alphabet was not used. Not all of them are easy to spot. In this paper, I introduce two use cases to demonstrate different aspects of the complex tasks that may be related to NLS material. The first use case focuses on metadata standards used to describe NLS material. Taking the VRA Core 4 XML as example, I will show where we found limitations for NLS material and how we were able to overcome them by expanding the standard. In the second use case, I look at the research data itself. Although the full-text digitization of western newspapers from the 20th century usually is not problematic anymore, this is not the case for Chinese newspapers from the Republican era (1912–1949). A major obstacle here is the dense and complex layout of the pages, which prevents OCR solutions from getting to the character recognition part. In our approach, we are combining different manual and computational methods like crowdsourcing, pattern recognition, and neural networks to be able to process the material in a more efficient way. The two use cases illustrate that data standards or processing methods that are established and stable for Latin script material may not always be easily adopted to non-Latin script research data.Des recherches académiques sur les recherches de textes numériques qui ne sont pas en alphabet latin (désormais NLS) peuvent poser plusieurs défis, car le matériel vient d’une région où l’alphabet latin n’était pas utilisé. Ils ne sont pas tous faciles à trouver. Dans cet article, je vais présenter deux cas d’utilisation pour démontrer les différents aspects des tâches complexes qui pourraient être reliées au matériel NLS. Le premier cas d’utilisation focus sur les standards de métadonnées utilisés pour décrire le matériel NLS. En prenant comme exemple le VRA Core 4 XML, je montre où se trouvent les limitations pour le matériel NLS et comment nous sommes capables de les surmonter en augmentant les standards. Pour le deuxième cas d’utilisation, je regarde les données de recherches elles-mêmes. Même si la numérisation de textes complets de journaux occidentaux du 20e siècle n’est plus problématique, ce n’est pas le cas pour les journaux chinois de l’ère républicaine (1912-1949). Un obstacle majeur est la densité et la complexité de la mise en page, ce qui empêche les solutions OCR (reconnaissance optique de caractères) de se rendre à la partie de reconnaissance des caractères. Dans notre approche, nous avons combiné des méthodes manuelles et computationnelles différentes comme l’externalisation ouverte (crowdsourcing), la reconnaissance de motifs, et le réseau neuronal pour procéder au matériel de manière plus efficace. Les deux cas d’utilisations démontrent que les données standards ou les méthodes de traitement qui sont établies et stables pour le matériel en alphabet latin ne peuvent être utilisées facilement pour des données qui ne sont pas en alphabet latin.&nbsp;

This report has been prepared by the “Bibliographical Data” Working Group of the DARIAH-ERIC consortium, which develops public digital research infrastructure for the arts and humanities. The Group consists of more than 30 members from 15 countries, most of whom are researchers and curators in the public sector who are engaged in bibliographical data (“bibliodata”) research and curation. This report is aimed at all active stakeholders in the humanities bibliodata landscape,especially public sector entities who may benefit from the Group’s insights and engage in cooperation to identify common interests, shape joint agendas, and achieve common goals. Those goals include creating shared infrastructure solutions, harmonising existing standards, and building partnerships to meet major challenges for contemporary bibliodata stakeholders. The bibliodata landscape is a dynamic ecosystem including the many stakeholders who produce, process, and use diverse bibliographical resources (datasets, tools, services). Following the digital revolution, this landscape has been reconfigured and a critical era is now upon us that demands closer investigation. This report analyses the state of the art by defining current bibliodata (Chapter 1), mapping the contemporary landscape (Chapter 2), identifying crucial stakeholder challenges and opportunities (Chapter 3), and offering recommendations for future cooperation (Chapter 4). This report presents an overview of issues in the bibliodata landscape. It is intended to provide a foundation for more detailed reports and case studies on the issues identified in this document.

The SSH Open Marketplace (https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/), built as part of the Social Sciences and Humanities Open Cloud (SSHOC) project, is a discovery portal for the SSH research community comprising tools & services, training materials, datasets, publications and workflows. Designed as a catalogue contextualising its resources by creating links between them and showcasing their use in research scenarios (workflows), the interfaces of the SSH Open Marketplace are crucial for the discovery and reusability of its content. How does one build convenient, reliable, and accurate interfaces for a discovery portal? Which audiences (human, machines) and technologies have to be addressed by the interfaces and in which priority? What does it mean to be user-friendly for a web service in the world of research infrastructures? Three interface dimensions will guide our presentation of the beta version of the SSH Open Marketplace: The human individual interface dimension or user experience (UX) design and user interface (UI) (Graphical User Interface: https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu/): SSH Open Marketplace is built to be a user-friendly portal designed on the principles of Human Center Designed (HCD) for the SSH community, with a low entry threshold for users' contributions. The design of the SSH Open Marketplace, developed by the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre (PSNC) and implemented by the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage (ACDH-CH), has been built consulting target user communities. But still we seek for further feedback from the attendees of the demo session to identify possible improvements. The machine-readable interface dimension or REST Application Programming Interface (API documentation: https://s.gwdg.de/pymPIp): the SSH Open Marketplace includes a REST API allowing experienced users to search and retrieve detailed information and even to add information. Particularly the last aspect would be of interest as to discuss how to provide easy means for adding new content to the marketplace using its API, which would likely be of interest for institutional users. A hackathon relying on some of the API functions is planned for September 2021, and our demo will also allow attendees to gain an overview of the hackathon tasks or to announce interest in taking part. The social-structural interface dimensions or gateway for SSH resources in the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC): https://marketplace.eosc-portal.eu/: the SSH Open Marketplace is a contribution to the SSH branch of the EOSC, and as such it can be seen as a communication interface between the EOSC, its infrastructures and the SSH research communities interested in digital methods and practices.

The report refers to the call for user stories for the Text+ consortium in the context of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). The user stories summited by scholars (mainly from the Humanities) present challenges or possible infrastructural solutions related to their individual research data. The report explains the context and methodology, as well as the decisions and steps taken during the call. It also provides an analysis of the major elements and categories of the user stories, and some reflexions for future measures.
