What makes our idea effective, rewarding and useful? This was the question addressed during a workshop session Digital humanities, citizen science and the arts: synergies towards innovative formats at the COESO project conference entitled Connect. Collaborate.Create (18-21 October 2023 in Paris). The session was an opportunity to present the assumptions of the OPERAS Innovation Lab and the methods it wants to develop in the area of evaluating innovative projects.

Researchers are busy people, torn between various professional duties (administration, teaching, research, work travel). They are by necessity ruthlessly efficient in time management, having to make judgements on what helps them reach the various impending deadlines which they face on a weekly basis. In this charged atmosphere, which is only exacerbated by the cycle of chasing after grant money and limited-term project funding, research infrastructures (RIs) can pass by unseen and underutilized, due to lack of familiarity. Indeed, like any infrastructure, it is often only seen when it is not working. This talk will propose an introduction to why researchers should dedicate their precious time to understand what RIs have to offer, using concrete examples of how DARIAH-EU helps lift up SSH researchers, providing a Europe-wide platform for cutting-edge tools, knowledge-exchange, and networking that enable ground-breaking research.

PALOMERA (Policy Alignment for Open Access Monographs in the European Research Area, https://operas-eu.org/projects/palomera) is a two-year project funded by Horizon Europe. It brings together 16 partners across Europe to investigate the landscape of Open Access (OA) funder policies and to understand why only few of these include academic books. Based on thorough research the project will develop actionable recommendations addressing these challenges and propose ways in which research funders and research performing organisations may align on a set of principles for OA book policies. Already in the first year we can see the need for a specific and urgent commitment which is outlined below. Funded by the European Union. When it was founded in 2014, DARIAH-EU, the European digital research infrastructure for arts and humanities, recognized the importance of open science but did not place particular emphasis on it. In the time since, however, openness has come to rest at the heart of everything the infrastructure does. This piece will look at the process by which a research infrastructure comes to view itself as both a resource and champion for open science in their community, and how the contributions of such organizations can uniquely enhance openness in the arts and humanities.

AbstractGLAM organizations have been digitizing their collections and making them available for the public for several decades. Recent methods for publishing digital collections such as “GLAM Labs” and “Collections as Data” provide guidelines for the application of computational methods to reuse the contents of cultural heritage institutions in innovative and creative ways. Jupyter Notebooks have become a powerful tool to foster use of these collections by digital humanities researchers. Based on previous approaches for quality assessment, which have been adapted for cultural heritage collections, this paper proposes a methodology for assessing the quality of projects based on Jupyter Notebooks published by relevant GLAM institutions. A list of projects based on Jupyter Notebooks using cultural heritage data has been evaluated. Common features and best practices have been identified. A detailed analysis, that can be useful for organizations interested in creating their own Jupyter Notebooks projects, has been provided. Open issues requiring further work and additional avenues for exploration are outlined.

This presentation was made during the CLARIN-LV conference "The latest language resources and tools for the digital humanities," hosted at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Latvia on September 12th, 2023. The talk focuses on an introduction of DARIAH and it's missions to the Latvian audience, and how research infrastructure helps uplift researchers and enables them to create groundbreaking research in a more supported, interconnected environment.
