    This chapter provides a comprehensive review of both laboratory characterization and modelling of bulk material fracture in asphalt mixtures. For the purpose of organization, this chapter is divided into a section on laboratory tests and a section on models. The laboratory characterization section is further subdivided on the basis of predominant loading conditions (monotonic vs. cyclic). The section on constitutive models is subdivided into two sections, the first one containing fracture mechanics based models for crack initiation and propagation that do not include material degradation due to cyclic loading conditions. The second section discusses phenomenological models that have been developed for crack growth through the use of dissipated energy and damage accumulation concepts. These latter models have the capability to simulate degradation of material capacity upon exceeding a threshold number of loading cycles. Peer Reviewed

    Pavement Life-Cycle Assessment Symposium 2017, CHAMPAIGN, ETATS-UNIS, 12-/04/2017 - 13/04/2017; Road pavements have considerable environmental burdens associated with their initial construction, maintenance and usage. This fact has led the pavement stakeholder commu-nity make congregate efforts to better understand and mitigate these negative effects. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a versatile methodology adopted to quantify the effect of deci-sions regarding the selection of resources and processes. However, there is a considerable variety of tools for conducting pavement LCAs. The objective of this paper is to provide the pavement stakeholder community with insights on the potential differences in the life cycle impact assessment results of a pavement by applying American and European LCA tools, namely PaLATE V2.2, VTTI/UC asphalt pavement LCA model, GaBi, DuboCalc and ECORCE-M, to a Spanish pavement reconstruction project. Construction and mainte-nance life cycle stages were considered in the comparison. Based on the impact assess-ment methods adopted by the different tools, the following indicators and impact catego-ries were analyzed: energy consumption, climate change, acidification, eutrophication and photochemical ozone creation. The results of the case study showed that it is of pivotal importance to develop (1) a more standardized framework for performing a LCA of road pavement that can be adapted to various tools and (2) local databases of materials and processes, which follow national and international standards.

    International audience; This paper is focused on the designing process of propulsion systems for road electric vehicles, by means of the RFLP approach for System Engineering. The process starts from the analysis of the main requirements for the vehicle considered, in relation to its specific mission. The vehicle behavior is then simulated on standard driving cycles, evaluating the performance figures of different power-train configurations, under different operative conditions. The presented designing procedure reaches the 3D CAD model of the identified propulsion system, coupled with a specific laboratory test bench, based on an eddy current brake and flywheel for the simulation of the vehicle inertia. The obtained simulation results show the good performance of the power-train in terms of vehicle speed following its reference on driving cycle and vehicle autonomy.

    ISBM 2020, RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials , Lyon, FRANCE, 14-/12/2020 - 16/12/2020; The Task Group 2 of the RILEM Technical Committee 264-RAP on non-cold recycling identified the need to gather some insights about possible durability issues associated with the combination of Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) and of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) in order to prioritize the characteriza-tion or research needs for relevant damage types. For this purpose, an interna-tional inter-laboratory testing program was launched in 5 different laboratories. This was developed on the basis of the challenges which a road material de-signer commonly faces: reduce the temperature, add RA, but preserve the same properties. Each laboratory characterized, according to its internal protocol, two variations of the same type of mixture (similar grading curve, binder content, etc.): a Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) without RA taken as reference and a WMA with 40% RA. The performances of all the WMA with 40% RA are then com-pared in order to see if common trends emerge from the different characteriza-tion methods and reveal property issues specific to WMA+RA combinations.

    Digital Concrete '18 : First Rilem International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication, ZURICH, SUISSE, 10-/09/2018 - 12/09/2018; Our results show that the storage elastic modulus as a function of time increases at a higher rate for the cement paste mixed at higher versus lower mixing intensiy. Hence, higher mixing appears to be enhancing thixotropy. Using calorimetry analysis we find that higher mixing decreases the setting time and enhances the peak of the heat flow. By analyzing the nanoparticles present in the suspending fluid of the cement paste, we show, in accordance with literature, that an appropriate combination of mixing energy and superplasticizer dosage promotes hydration by scratching hydrates from the surface of cement particles, stabilizing them in the suspending fluid and hence generating additional nucleation surfaces. These results open the door for the design of printing heads including high-shear micro mixers allowing for a faster liquid-to-solid transition of the printable material.

    Part 1: Aviation Infrastructure Security; International audience; Cyber-physical system security is a significant concern in the critical infrastructure. Strong interdependencies between cyber and physical components render cyber-physical systems highly susceptible to integrity attacks such as injecting malicious data and projecting fake sensor measurements. Traditional security models partition cyber-physical systems into just two domains – high and low. This absolute partitioning is not well suited to cyber-physical systems because they comprise multiple overlapping partitions. Information flow properties, which model how inputs to a system affect its outputs across security partitions, are important considerations in cyber-physical systems. Information flows support traceability analysis that helps detect vulnerabilities and anomalous sources, contributing to the implementation of mitigation measures.This chapter describes an automated model with graph-based information flow traversal for identifying information flow paths in the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system used in civilian aviation, and subsequently partitioning the flows into security domains. The results help identify ADS-B system vulnerabilities to failures and attacks, and determine potential mitigation measures.

    Best Student Paper Award; International audience; This paper aims at investigating further the use of the social media Twitter as a real-time estimator of the US Air Transportation system. Two different machine learning regressors have been trained on this 2017 passenger-centric dataset and tested on the first two months of 2018 for the estimation of air traffic delays at departure and arrival at 34 different US airports. Using three different levels of content-related features created from the flow of social media posts led to the extraction of useful information about the current state of the air traffic system. The resulting methods yield higher estimation performances than traditional state-of-the-art and off-the-shelf time-series forecasting techniques performed on flight-centric data for more than 28 airports. Moreover the features extracted can also be used to start a passenger-centric analysis of the Air Transportation system. This paper is the continuation of previous works focusing on estimating air traffic delays leveraging a real-time publicly available passenger-centered data source. The results of this study suggest a method to use passenger-centric data-sources as an estimator of the current state of the different actors of the air transportation system in real-time.

    The work presented in this paper describes a novel multi-phase discharge and dispersion model capable of predicting the near-field fluid dynamics and phase-transition phenomena associated with accidental CO2 releases. Also presented in this paper are previously unpublished data describing the near-field structure of a number of largescale CO2 experimental releases, obtained through the EU-FP7 CO2PipeHaz (2009) project. The calculations employed an adaptive finite-volume grid algorithm to solve the Favre-averaged fluid-flow equations. This equation set was closed with the inclusion of both a two-equation k-e model and a second-moment Reynolds stress model to represent turbulent fluctuations. Results demonstrate the superior performance of the Reynolds stress transport model when compared to its compressibility-corrected counterpart.

    Part 5: Case Studies; International audience; Passenger acceptance is a key factor for the successful integration, uptake and use of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the domain of public transportation. Especially knowing opinions and attitudes around safety, comfort and convenience. We discuss a pilot study conducted as part of a larger research project where AVs are being tested to transport members of the general public on a specified route with designated stops. We present preliminary findings of fieldwork conducted where people were asked their opinions and attitudes both before and after riding on an AV shuttle as a passenger for the first time. This allows us to compare user expectation beforehand with actual experience afterwards.

    Trade-wind cumuli constitute the cloud type with the highest frequency of occurrence on Earth, and it has been shown that their sensitivity to changing environmental conditions will critically influence the magnitude and pace of future global warming. Research over the last decade has pointed out the importance of the interplay between clouds, convection and circulation in controling this sensitivity. Numerical models represent this interplay in diverse ways, which translates into different responses of trade-cumuli to climate perturbations. Climate models predict that the area covered by shallow cumuli at cloud base is very sensitive to changes in environmental conditions, while process models suggest the opposite. To understand and resolve this contradiction, we propose to organize a field campaign aimed at quantifying the physical properties of trade-cumuli (e.g., cloud fraction and water content) as a function of the large-scale environment. Beyond a better understanding of clouds-circulation coupling processes, the campaign will provide a reference data set that may be used as a benchmark for advancing the modelling and the satellite remote sensing of clouds and circulation. It will also be an opportunity for complementary investigations such as evaluating model convective parameterizations or studying the role of ocean mesoscale eddies in air–sea interactions and convective organization.     This chapter provides a comprehensive review of both laboratory characterization and modelling of bulk material fracture in asphalt mixtures. For the purpose of organization, this chapter is divided into a section on laboratory tests and a section on models. The laboratory characterization section is further subdivided on the basis of predominant loading conditions (monotonic vs. cyclic). The section on constitutive models is subdivided into two sections, the first one containing fracture mechanics based models for crack initiation and propagation that do not include material degradation due to cyclic loading conditions. The second section discusses phenomenological models that have been developed for crack growth through the use of dissipated energy and damage accumulation concepts. These latter models have the capability to simulate degradation of material capacity upon exceeding a threshold number of loading cycles. Peer Reviewed

    Pavement Life-Cycle Assessment Symposium 2017, CHAMPAIGN, ETATS-UNIS, 12-/04/2017 - 13/04/2017; Road pavements have considerable environmental burdens associated with their initial construction, maintenance and usage. This fact has led the pavement stakeholder commu-nity make congregate efforts to better understand and mitigate these negative effects. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a versatile methodology adopted to quantify the effect of deci-sions regarding the selection of resources and processes. However, there is a considerable variety of tools for conducting pavement LCAs. The objective of this paper is to provide the pavement stakeholder community with insights on the potential differences in the life cycle impact assessment results of a pavement by applying American and European LCA tools, namely PaLATE V2.2, VTTI/UC asphalt pavement LCA model, GaBi, DuboCalc and ECORCE-M, to a Spanish pavement reconstruction project. Construction and mainte-nance life cycle stages were considered in the comparison. Based on the impact assess-ment methods adopted by the different tools, the following indicators and impact catego-ries were analyzed: energy consumption, climate change, acidification, eutrophication and photochemical ozone creation. The results of the case study showed that it is of pivotal importance to develop (1) a more standardized framework for performing a LCA of road pavement that can be adapted to various tools and (2) local databases of materials and processes, which follow national and international standards.

    International audience; This paper is focused on the designing process of propulsion systems for road electric vehicles, by means of the RFLP approach for System Engineering. The process starts from the analysis of the main requirements for the vehicle considered, in relation to its specific mission. The vehicle behavior is then simulated on standard driving cycles, evaluating the performance figures of different power-train configurations, under different operative conditions. The presented designing procedure reaches the 3D CAD model of the identified propulsion system, coupled with a specific laboratory test bench, based on an eddy current brake and flywheel for the simulation of the vehicle inertia. The obtained simulation results show the good performance of the power-train in terms of vehicle speed following its reference on driving cycle and vehicle autonomy.

    ISBM 2020, RILEM International Symposium on Bituminous Materials , Lyon, FRANCE, 14-/12/2020 - 16/12/2020; The Task Group 2 of the RILEM Technical Committee 264-RAP on non-cold recycling identified the need to gather some insights about possible durability issues associated with the combination of Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) and of Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) in order to prioritize the characteriza-tion or research needs for relevant damage types. For this purpose, an interna-tional inter-laboratory testing program was launched in 5 different laboratories. This was developed on the basis of the challenges which a road material de-signer commonly faces: reduce the temperature, add RA, but preserve the same properties. Each laboratory characterized, according to its internal protocol, two variations of the same type of mixture (similar grading curve, binder content, etc.): a Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) without RA taken as reference and a WMA with 40% RA. The performances of all the WMA with 40% RA are then com-pared in order to see if common trends emerge from the different characteriza-tion methods and reveal property issues specific to WMA+RA combinations.

    Digital Concrete '18 : First Rilem International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication, ZURICH, SUISSE, 10-/09/2018 - 12/09/2018; Our results show that the storage elastic modulus as a function of time increases at a higher rate for the cement paste mixed at higher versus lower mixing intensiy. Hence, higher mixing appears to be enhancing thixotropy. Using calorimetry analysis we find that higher mixing decreases the setting time and enhances the peak of the heat flow. By analyzing the nanoparticles present in the suspending fluid of the cement paste, we show, in accordance with literature, that an appropriate combination of mixing energy and superplasticizer dosage promotes hydration by scratching hydrates from the surface of cement particles, stabilizing them in the suspending fluid and hence generating additional nucleation surfaces. These results open the door for the design of printing heads including high-shear micro mixers allowing for a faster liquid-to-solid transition of the printable material.

    Part 1: Aviation Infrastructure Security; International audience; Cyber-physical system security is a significant concern in the critical infrastructure. Strong interdependencies between cyber and physical components render cyber-physical systems highly susceptible to integrity attacks such as injecting malicious data and projecting fake sensor measurements. Traditional security models partition cyber-physical systems into just two domains – high and low. This absolute partitioning is not well suited to cyber-physical systems because they comprise multiple overlapping partitions. Information flow properties, which model how inputs to a system affect its outputs across security partitions, are important considerations in cyber-physical systems. Information flows support traceability analysis that helps detect vulnerabilities and anomalous sources, contributing to the implementation of mitigation measures.This chapter describes an automated model with graph-based information flow traversal for identifying information flow paths in the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system used in civilian aviation, and subsequently partitioning the flows into security domains. The results help identify ADS-B system vulnerabilities to failures and attacks, and determine potential mitigation measures.

    Best Student Paper Award; International audience; This paper aims at investigating further the use of the social media Twitter as a real-time estimator of the US Air Transportation system. Two different machine learning regressors have been trained on this 2017 passenger-centric dataset and tested on the first two months of 2018 for the estimation of air traffic delays at departure and arrival at 34 different US airports. Using three different levels of content-related features created from the flow of social media posts led to the extraction of useful information about the current state of the air traffic system. The resulting methods yield higher estimation performances than traditional state-of-the-art and off-the-shelf time-series forecasting techniques performed on flight-centric data for more than 28 airports. Moreover the features extracted can also be used to start a passenger-centric analysis of the Air Transportation system. This paper is the continuation of previous works focusing on estimating air traffic delays leveraging a real-time publicly available passenger-centered data source. The results of this study suggest a method to use passenger-centric data-sources as an estimator of the current state of the different actors of the air transportation system in real-time.

    The work presented in this paper describes a novel multi-phase discharge and dispersion model capable of predicting the near-field fluid dynamics and phase-transition phenomena associated with accidental CO2 releases. Also presented in this paper are previously unpublished data describing the near-field structure of a number of largescale CO2 experimental releases, obtained through the EU-FP7 CO2PipeHaz (2009) project. The calculations employed an adaptive finite-volume grid algorithm to solve the Favre-averaged fluid-flow equations. This equation set was closed with the inclusion of both a two-equation k-e model and a second-moment Reynolds stress model to represent turbulent fluctuations. Results demonstrate the superior performance of the Reynolds stress transport model when compared to its compressibility-corrected counterpart.

    Part 5: Case Studies; International audience; Passenger acceptance is a key factor for the successful integration, uptake and use of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in the domain of public transportation. Especially knowing opinions and attitudes around safety, comfort and convenience. We discuss a pilot study conducted as part of a larger research project where AVs are being tested to transport members of the general public on a specified route with designated stops. We present preliminary findings of fieldwork conducted where people were asked their opinions and attitudes both before and after riding on an AV shuttle as a passenger for the first time. This allows us to compare user expectation beforehand with actual experience afterwards.

    Trade-wind cumuli constitute the cloud type with the highest frequency of occurrence on Earth, and it has been shown that their sensitivity to changing environmental conditions will critically influence the magnitude and pace of future global warming. Research over the last decade has pointed out the importance of the interplay between clouds, convection and circulation in controling this sensitivity. Numerical models represent this interplay in diverse ways, which translates into different responses of trade-cumuli to climate perturbations. Climate models predict that the area covered by shallow cumuli at cloud base is very sensitive to changes in environmental conditions, while process models suggest the opposite. To understand and resolve this contradiction, we propose to organize a field campaign aimed at quantifying the physical properties of trade-cumuli (e.g., cloud fraction and water content) as a function of the large-scale environment. Beyond a better understanding of clouds-circulation coupling processes, the campaign will provide a reference data set that may be used as a benchmark for advancing the modelling and the satellite remote sensing of clouds and circulation. It will also be an opportunity for complementary investigations such as evaluating model convective parameterizations or studying the role of ocean mesoscale eddies in air–sea interactions and convective organization.
